Exchange access and protections vary by country and state, and fee schedules, supported assets, and transfer options change. Check the exchange’s current official disclosures before opening an account or placing an order.
Start with the trade and transfer you actually need
Before comparing platforms, write down where you live, which asset you want, how you will fund the account, the approximate order size and frequency, and whether you intend to withdraw the crypto. These details determine which exchanges and services are relevant: an asset might be available to trade but not to withdraw, or an exchange might offer a feature only in some locations.

Compare the same transaction on each candidate: same asset pair, order size, payment method, product type, and approximate time. A fee comparison between different order flows or market conditions is not like-for-like.
Compare the full cost—not just the trading fee
Exchanges may offer an order-book interface as well as instant-buy, convert, or simple-purchase flows. Their charges can differ, so identify the exact flow you plan to use. Include any trading fee, quoted-price spread, funding charge, and withdrawal or network fee.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Order-book trades: Check the applicable maker or taker fee and any volume-based tier. Kraken publishes a tiered schedule for its order-book trading; its instant-purchase and conversion flows are distinct. See Kraken’s fee schedule.
- Consumer simple buys and conversions: Coinbase says its fee is calculated when the order is placed and may depend on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, asset, and other costs. The quoted total can therefore differ from a headline fee. See Coinbase’s consumer fee explanation.
- Exchange products: A company’s advanced exchange interface may have a separate schedule from its consumer app. Coinbase Exchange publishes a distinct fee schedule at Coinbase Exchange fees.
- Withdrawals: If you plan to move crypto off-platform, check the fee, minimum, supported network, and current network status separately from the purchase cost.
Use each platform’s order preview to compare the estimated amount paid and crypto received for the same hypothetical order. The preview is more useful than comparing percentage fees alone because it reflects the product flow and quoted price you would actually use. Fee schedules and quotes can change; verify them on the day you trade. For example, the Kraken schedule visible in the source set showed an effective date of Oct. 5, 2026, one day after the research check date of Oct. 4, 2026, so that future-dated table should not be treated as the Oct. 4 rate.
Evaluate custody and what happens if the provider fails
On a custodial exchange, the provider controls the private keys for assets held in your account. That may be easier to use, but it exposes you to provider, account, and withdrawal risks. Read the terms and disclosures to find out how customer assets are held and used, whether they may be lent or commingled, what protections secure account access and withdrawals, and what happens if the provider is hacked, suspends withdrawals, shuts down, or becomes insolvent.

The SEC’s investor guidance warns that crypto platforms should not be casually assumed to carry the protections associated with a bank deposit account or a registered securities exchange. It also cautions that proof-of-reserves is not the same as an audited financial statement. Read the SEC investor alert on crypto-asset securities and look for disclosures relevant to the specific service and legal entity you would use.
Custodial exchange or self-custody?
With third-party custody, the provider controls the keys and you rely on its systems and terms. With self-custody, you control the keys but also assume responsibility for protecting them. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance stated in its Dec. 12, 2025 bulletin, Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors: “Self-custody also means that you have sole responsibility for the security of your crypto assets’ private keys.” The bulletin recommends researching custodians and asking how assets are held and used, as well as about fees, security, privacy, and consent. See the SEC custody bulletin.

A hardware wallet is one way to hold keys offline, but it does not eliminate the need to protect keys and recovery information. The SEC bulletin notes that physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money; self-custody still leaves the owner responsible for key security. Consider whether you can manage that responsibility before withdrawing assets.

A coin appearing in an exchange’s general list does not establish that you can buy it, hold it, or withdraw it where you live. Availability may differ by jurisdiction, legal entity, product, and operation. Check each intended asset for the exact service you need: spot trading, custody, staking if relevant, deposits, and withdrawals.

- Confirm that the asset is available to customers in your country or state and through the product you plan to use.
- Check that the trading pair you need is listed, rather than assuming the asset can be traded against your preferred fiat currency or another coin.
- If depositing or withdrawing, verify the exact blockchain network, address format, minimum amount, fee, and whether transfers are currently enabled. A token on one network is not automatically transferable through another.
- Check the platform’s current terms and disclosures for the entity serving your location. Legal protections and eligibility can differ across services and jurisdictions.
Coinbase’s disclosures distinguish U.S. trading assets, including New York, from Prime custody support, and note that availability can depend on geography and entity. Its Prime supported-assets list is indicative and was last updated in Q3 2026; it is not a global inventory of every Coinbase product. Consult the Coinbase digital-asset disclosures and its Prime supported cryptocurrencies and trading pairs, then verify availability for your own location and intended operation.

- Define your use case. Note your location, asset, funding method, order size, trading frequency, and whether you will withdraw.
- Choose the matching product flow. Identify whether you will use an order book, instant purchase, or conversion; do not compare a fee from one flow with a quote from another.
- Compare like-for-like previews. Enter the same pair, payment method, and order amount, then compare estimated total cost and crypto received. Check funding and withdrawal costs too.
- Confirm local asset support. Verify the pair and each required function—trading, custody, deposit, or withdrawal—for your location.
- Review custody terms. Look for key control, asset use, lending, commingling, withdrawal rules, account protections, and provider-distress disclosures.
- Recheck before acting. Review official fee schedules, asset lists, transfer status, and terms on the day you open the account or transact.
When the comparison does not produce a clear winner
There is no universal “best” exchange established by these criteria alone. A platform with a lower displayed trading fee may cost more for your payment method or withdrawal, while a broad asset list may not include the pair or transfer function you need locally. Compare the full transaction and custody arrangement that applies to you; if a material fee, asset-support detail, or custody term is unclear, do not assume the most favorable interpretation.
