In the UK, there is no legally prescribed retention period for CCTV footage: keep it only as long as needed for the system’s stated purpose, then securely delete it. If footage relates to a specific police investigation, preserve only the relevant clip while the need is reviewed. Sharing it with police is often appropriate, but a request does not automatically require disclosure; check the request, record your decision and transfer any footage securely.
How long should CCTV footage be kept?
UK data-protection law does not set a minimum or maximum retention period for CCTV. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says the purpose of processing should determine how long footage is kept. Choose and document the shortest period that meets that purpose, check that the policy is followed, and securely delete footage when it is no longer needed. Do not keep recordings just because the system has spare storage or might be useful someday. ICO guidance on CCTV retention.

Thirty days is common practice, not a legal rule. GOV.UK says most CCTV footage is deleted 30 days after it is recorded; that describes what happens to most footage and does not establish a required period or safe harbor for every system. GOV.UK: Request CCTV footage of yourself. If an incident occurs, contact the operator promptly: footage may be overwritten under its ordinary schedule.

How to ask for footage to be preserved
Preservation and disclosure are separate decisions. Asking an operator to retain a clip while police investigate does not itself mean the operator must provide a copy to every requester.
- Contact the system owner or operator as soon as possible. Give the incident date, approximate time, location and a narrow time window that covers the event.
- Explain that the footage may relate to a police investigation and ask the operator to preserve that specific material. If available, provide the police force and incident reference.
- Ask the operator to confirm whether it can locate and retain the clip. The operator should record why retention is being extended and review whether it remains necessary.
How should an operator handle a police request?
The ICO says disclosing relevant footage to law enforcement is appropriate in most cases, including when a shopkeeper proactively shares footage of a crime. Relevant disclosure can also be acceptable when crime prevention was not the system’s original purpose. But disclosure is often voluntary unless a court order or another overriding legal obligation applies; the operator remains responsible for deciding what to disclose. - Verify and clarify. Confirm the police force and contact details, the incident reference if supplied, the purpose, time range and requested scope. Clarify anything ambiguous. The guidance does not prescribe one mandatory form for every request.
- Preserve the relevant recording. If a specific investigation makes continued retention necessary, pause routine deletion for the relevant clip. Record the reason and review the need; do not retain all system footage indefinitely.
- Export only what is relevant. Where the system allows, keep the original recording and its metadata intact. Reliable date, time and location information matter; unreliable metadata or excessive compression can undermine evidential use. Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.
- Restrict access and keep a record. Log when footage was disclosed, who received it and from which organization, what was shared, and why. Maintain an audit trail when the material may be evidence. ICO guidance on secure handling.
- Agree a secure delivery method. Make the footage available only to the intended recipient and protect it against loss or unintended distribution. Encryption may be appropriate. Ask the receiving police force how it accepts evidence: the guidance does not prescribe a universal file type, USB drive, portal or other channel.
- Do not post it publicly. Sharing identifiable footage on social media or an open video platform can be unfair or unlawful. Public posting is not a substitute for reporting the incident to police.
What if you appear in the footage?
You can make a subject access request to the system owner verbally or in writing. Give details that help locate the recording, such as the date, time and a description, and provide proof of identity where appropriate. GOV.UK says the owner usually has one calendar month to respond. It may be unable to share footage if other people appear and cannot be protected through editing, or if disclosure could put an ongoing criminal investigation at risk. GOV.UK subject-access guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause the response period may be longer than the time the operator routinely keeps a recording, contact the operator quickly and specifically ask it to preserve the relevant footage while handling your request. The ICO recommends timely handling and appropriate logging of verbal requests. ICO guidance on handling access requests.

Practical points for home and business CCTV
Businesses
GOV.UK says businesses should tell people CCTV is in use and why, generally be able to provide a person’s images within one calendar month, share images with authorities such as police if asked, and keep images only as long as the business needs them. Read that concise guidance alongside the ICO’s more detailed advice on purpose, lawful disclosure, security and record-keeping. GOV.UK: Using CCTV.
Homes
Government guidance for domestic CCTV advises keeping the system’s date and time accurate, securing recordings, limiting access, deleting information once it is no longer necessary to protect property, and learning how to export footage. It warns against using recordings for unrelated purposes such as posting them on social media. If a home camera captures beyond the home boundary, data-protection obligations may apply. Choosing a routine retention period and transfer method
There is no pair of legally prescribed retention durations to choose between. Set a short, proportionate routine period based on the system’s actual purpose, how long incidents may take to be detected, the ability to retrieve recordings, and the privacy impact on people recorded. Document the reason and review the period against experience. Assess preservation for a live case separately from routine retention.

For a police transfer, weigh the force’s accepted submission method against security, access control, image quality, metadata preservation and auditability. Official guidance calls for a controlled, secure disclosure but does not standardize the medium. A USB drive is only an option if the receiving force accepts it; it is not a general requirement.
