The available reporting does not verify which “most important question” the headline refers to or what answer Critical Role gave. The closest related report describes a consequential choice in Campaign 4—not a confirmed answer to that question.
What the available report actually says
Wargamer’s September 1, 2026, report by Mollie Russell describes an episode involving Matt Mercer’s character, Sir Julien Davinos, and Thjazi. During Thjazi’s funeral, Julien spat on the corpse. The report says that act allowed Thjazi to curse Julien and persist as his Shadow. Read the Wargamer report.

That is a story consequence, not a verified answer to a named D&D question. The report does not identify the question in the supplied headline, so it would be misleading to claim that this scene resolves what “D&D’s most important question” is.

As Russell reports it, Brennan Lee Mulligan said he had not planned every detail of the outcome. He described the consequence as arising from Mercer’s choice, rather than from a fully fixed storyline. The report attributes this line to Mulligan in an official Critical Role Instagram AMA: “You gotta let player choices matter – even those they don’t know in the moment are going to matter.” It also quotes him saying, “When he spat on that corpse, my jaw dropped.” These quotations are reported secondhand by Wargamer; the original AMA could not be independently reviewed here.

The comments suggest a distinction in game-mastering approach: a GM can plan situations and leave space for players’ actions to shape what follows, rather than deciding every outcome in advance. That is an interpretation of the reported comments, not an official D&D rule or a claim that every campaign must be run this way.
What remains unconfirmed
- The exact question meant by “D&D’s most important question.”
- The controversial answer supposedly given by Critical Role.
- Whether the reported Julien-and-Thjazi scene is connected to that headline at all.
Until the intended question and answer can be tied to a source, the defensible takeaway is limited: the closest verified report concerns player choice and an unexpected consequence in Campaign 4, not a confirmed answer to the headline’s central question.
