Video games are not one activity with one mental-health effect. What a child plays, who they play with, how the experience feels, and what gaming displaces all matter. Dismissing it outright can leave adults less able to understand both the good and the troubling parts of a child’s gaming life.

Listen to what gaming is like for the child

In an Australian study of 1,799 online gamers aged 8–17, most said gaming supported at least one of three things: learning or skills, social connection, or emotional wellbeing. At the same time, four in ten reported negative experiences, and three in ten teen gamers had encountered potentially harmful ideas. The fieldwork took place in August and September 2023, according to the Australian eSafety Commissioner.

Those findings are not contradictory. A game can be a place to practise, laugh with friends, or unwind—and also expose a young person to harassment, upsetting material, or pressure to keep playing. The Commissioner reports that young people wanted adults to understand what gaming is like for them, and that many would welcome the chance to play with parents and carers. That is the regulator’s summary of young people’s views, not a quotation from a named child.

So the useful first question is not simply “How many hours?” Ask what the child plays, what they enjoy, who is there, and whether anything has made them uncomfortable. Listening does not mean approving every game or interaction. It gives adults a more accurate starting point for setting boundaries and offering help.

What the studies can—and cannot—tell us

Research findings differ partly because studies ask different questions, follow different groups, and measure different outcomes. They should not be combined into a single verdict about every child or treated as proof that gaming causes either benefit or harm.

Source and group What was examined Finding and useful qualification
Australian eSafety Commissioner; 1,799 online gamers aged 8–17; fieldwork in August–September 2023 Young people’s reported experiences and perceived benefits and risks of online gaming Most reported at least one benefit related to learning or skills, social connection, or emotional wellbeing; four in ten reported negative experiences, and three in ten teen gamers had encountered potentially harmful ideas. These are self-reported experiences, not a clinical diagnosis or a causal estimate.
Lobel and colleagues, 2017; 194 children around ages 7–11 Gaming and psychosocial wellbeing measured at two points one year apart Gaming frequency was associated with increases in emotion problems; violent-game play was not associated with psychosocial changes. Competitive play was linked with lower prosocial behavior only among frequent players, around eight or more hours weekly. The authors called for replication; the associations do not establish that gaming caused the changes.
School Children Mental Health Europe researchers, 2016; 3,195 children aged 6–11 in six EU countries Video-game use and broad mental-health, cognitive, and social measures Video-game use was not associated with an increased risk of mental-health problems in this study. That observational result does not prove gaming is beneficial or rule out harm for an individual child.

The studies are useful for challenging blanket claims, not for replacing attention to a particular child. The small one-year cohort, the larger multi-country observational study, and young people’s accounts measure different things; none supplies a universal rule for deciding whether a child’s gaming is healthy.

Look at the experience, not only the clock

Duration matters, but it is one part of the picture. The available sources do not establish a single screen-time cutoff that predicts harm for every child. Instead, pay attention to whether gaming is crowding out sleep, movement, schoolwork, family life, or offline relationships—and whether the child seems able to stop when needed.

Ask what the game asks of the player

Consider the content, the pace and intensity, whether play is cooperative or competitive, and how the game encourages continued engagement. A child’s experience can also differ between playing alone, with trusted friends, or in an open online space. Commercial designs that reward prolonged engagement can make it harder to put a device down; the American Academy of Pediatrics’ January 2026 policy statement discusses this risk across digital media, not games alone.

Ask who is on the other side

Online play may be a real social setting, but it can also involve unwanted contact, bullying, or harmful ideas. Find out whether the child knows the people they play with, what communication tools are enabled, and whether they know how to mute, block, report, or leave an interaction. Practical safety settings help, but they do not replace a conversation about what has happened.

Notice the child’s circumstances

Age, friendships, family context, existing vulnerabilities, and the child’s own account all affect how a gaming session lands. The National Mental Health Commission of Australia’s October 1, 2026 release describes the relationship between digital technology and mental health as complex, with age, platform, content, social context, and vulnerabilities among the relevant factors. Its direction-of-effect findings concern digital technology overall, particularly social media; they should not be presented as proof about video games specifically.

How parents can stay involved without turning every session into a fight

  1. Start with curiosity. Ask the child to show you what they play and explain what they like about it. Ask whether anything online has felt uncomfortable, and whether gaming is affecting sleep or other activities. Make room for an honest answer before jumping to punishment.
  2. Spend time in their gaming world. Play alongside them if they are willing, or watch and ask questions. The eSafety Commissioner reports that many young people would welcome gaming with parents and carers. Joining in can help an adult understand the game’s social rules and pressure points rather than relying on assumptions.
  3. Agree on boundaries tied to wellbeing. Set expectations around stopping, bedtime, school responsibilities, movement, and family time. Explain the reason for limits and revisit them as the child’s needs and routines change. A boundary is more useful when it protects a real need than when it treats every game as inherently harmful.
  4. Make a plan for difficult interactions. Agree on what the child can do if someone is threatening, persistent, or upsetting: leave the game, use its safety tools, and tell a trusted adult. Respond calmly when a child brings you a problem so that asking for help does not feel like an automatic loss of access.
  5. Respond to patterns, not a label. If gaming is repeatedly interfering with daily life or the child is distressed, talk with them and consider seeking advice from a qualified health professional. A game or parental-control setting is not a substitute for appropriate support.

Why listening is a better starting point than blame

The World Health Organization notes that digital environments can support connection, learning, and access to services while also exposing people to harmful content, excessive use and addictive behaviors, cyberbullying, and isolation. The American Academy of Pediatrics likewise describes possible benefits of digital media, including learning, identity, expression, and wellbeing, especially with supportive caregiver involvement, quality content, and positive peers. Both are broad digital-environment guidance, not evidence that video games alone improve mental health.

The sensible position is neither “games are harmless” nor “games are the enemy.” Children’s accounts and the research show a varied experience. Adults are better placed to protect a child when they understand what that experience actually involves: the game, the people, the content, the time, and the effect on the rest of the child’s life.
