Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion brings an extensive official remaster feature set to Switch 2, but the available evidence does not establish whether its Switch 2-specific performance makes it an excellent technical upgrade. Nintendo lists this as a digital, Switch 2-only edition released September 9, 2026. It is separate from the original Switch version, and the two versions do not share save data.
What kind of upgrade is Reunion?
Crisis Core Reunion is a remaster of the original Crisis Core, not a new story. It follows Zack Fair, a young Shinra SOLDIER operative, seven years before Final Fantasy VII. Zack investigates the disappearance of SOLDIER 1st Class Genesis Rhapsodos; the story also features Angeal, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Aerith. Square Enix’s official game page describes the game’s premise and remaster.

Square Enix advertises a complete HD graphics overhaul, a remastered soundtrack, a reimagined user interface, and updated combat. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing additionally specifies renewed character and background models, fully voiced English and Japanese dialogue, and a newly arranged soundtrack by original composer Takeharu Ishimoto. These are the publishers’ descriptions of the changes; they do not, by themselves, establish how visibly improved the game looks or how well it runs on Switch 2.

Which Switch version should you buy?
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 edition as a digital release dated September 9, 2026. Its product page says the edition is compatible only with Switch 2 and cannot be played on the original Switch. A separate Nintendo Switch version exists, so check the platform label before purchasing; saves are incompatible between the two versions.
The Switch 2 listing reports a 14.9 GB download. It is a digital edition, not a physical Switch 2 game card. Nintendo’s listing is the official product page.

Does it run better on Switch 2?
There are no verified Switch 2-specific measurements here for resolution, frame rate, loading times, image quality, or stability, in either handheld or docked play. That means the remaster’s advertised features can be described, but its technical performance on Switch 2 cannot be confirmed from those descriptions alone.
Square Enix’s older platform notice gives the original Nintendo Switch version a 1280 × 720 resolution and a 30 fps ceiling in both TV and handheld modes. The notice was updated November 26, 2023, with its original update heading dated November 21, 2022. Those figures apply to the original Switch version only; the notice does not list Switch 2 and cannot substantiate a Switch 2 resolution or frame rate. Square Enix’s platform notice separates the original Switch specifications from those for other platforms.

Is the Switch 2 edition worth buying?
Consider it if you want to play Zack’s prequel adventure on Switch 2 and value the advertised remaster changes: refreshed models and graphics, arranged music, voiced dialogue, a redesigned interface, and updated combat. It also offers the flexibility of handheld, tabletop, and TV play.
If your decision depends on a measurable technical improvement over the original Switch release, the evidence above is not enough to establish one. A Switch 2-specific performance assessment would need to verify image quality, frame rate, loading, and stability in both portable and docked use rather than infer them from the older Switch specifications.
