NordVPN is a feature-rich VPN with optional security and privacy tools on higher-priced plans. It performed well in independent leak and kill-switch tests, and the company says a sixth Deloitte Lithuania assurance engagement found its systems and operations aligned with its no-logs statement. Those findings are useful, but they do not establish complete anonymity or settle every question about policy transparency. Whether NordVPN is worth paying for depends on the features you need, the devices you use and the renewal price in your region.
What NordVPN includes
NordVPN is best understood as a VPN subscription with a growing set of optional extras—not as a single, identical bundle for every customer. Its core service encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server, masking your IP address from the sites and services you visit. The VPN does not make you anonymous: account sign-ins, browser tracking, payment details, device security and your own activity can still identify or expose you.

Security.org reported more than 9,300 servers in 137 countries in its review updated October 1, 2026. Network counts and locations can change, so treat those figures as that review’s snapshot rather than a permanent specification.
Plans bundle different extras
RTINGS’ July 13, 2026 plan comparison listed four tiers. The features below reflect that comparison, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every country, operating system or current checkout offer.
#1 Best Overall
| Tier in RTINGS’ comparison | Included features reported |
|---|---|
| Basic | VPN |
| Plus | Basic features, Threat Protection Pro and password management |
| Complete | Plus features and 1 TB cloud storage |
| Ultra | Complete features and NordProtect |
Before choosing a tier, check the current plan name, feature list and device support shown for your region. A higher tier only adds value if you will use its extras.
Is NordVPN safe, and how strong is the privacy evidence?
There are two different questions: whether the connection behaves securely in tests, and whether the provider’s policies and operations deserve your trust. The available findings address both, but they are not interchangeable.
Independent assurance of the no-logs statement
NordVPN announced on February 3, 2026 that it had commissioned Deloitte Lithuania for a sixth independent reasonable-assurance engagement, conducted under ISAE 3000 (Revised). NordVPN says Deloitte concluded that its IT systems and supporting operations were designed and implemented in line with the company’s no-logs statement. The announcement does not provide report excerpts; NordVPN says customers can view the full report after signing into a Nord Account. That access restriction means the public announcement is not a substitute for reading the underlying report.
Rank #2
For context, Nord Security’s February 18, 2025 announcement described the fifth engagement. It said Deloitte practitioners interviewed employees and inspected infrastructure and technical logs, with access to NordVPN services from November 18 to December 20, 2024. The stated scope included standard VPN, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated and P2P servers. That is historical information about the fifth engagement, not evidence of the sixth engagement’s exact scope.
In the 2025 announcement, NordVPN CTO Marijus Briedis said: “To maintain that trust, we not only strive each year to innovate and develop world-leading cybersecurity products, but we also fully commit to our promise not to monitor or record our users’ online traffic.” A provider’s statement of intent and an assurance engagement are relevant evidence, but neither turns a VPN into a guarantee of anonymity or protection from every threat.
Connection tests and policy questions
RTINGS reported that its tests found no IP-address or DNS-query leaks and that NordVPN’s kill switch worked. A kill switch is designed to stop internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, reducing the chance that traffic continues over your ordinary connection. Results from a reviewer’s tests describe the tested setup; they cannot promise the same outcome on every device, network or configuration.
RTINGS separately criticized the clarity of NordVPN’s policy language, possible collection and sharing of personal information, limited access to audit reports and company transparency. These concerns do not negate the technical test results, just as a clean leak test does not resolve questions about data handling. Readers who prioritize privacy should review the policy and available assurance information as well as the technical safeguards.

Threat Protection Pro, also referred to in product materials as Next-Gen Antivirus, is an added layer that can block malicious sites and scan downloads. It may be useful as part of a broader security setup, but it is not a replacement for a dedicated endpoint-security product where one is needed, software updates, backups or careful handling of links and files.
Tom’s Guide reported on a test run from August 12–22, 2026, assessing 250 live phishing URLs and 250 legitimate URLs. It reported that NordVPN’s product detected 94% of the phishing URLs and produced zero false alarms in that test. Tom’s Guide also reported an earlier AV-TEST result of 83.42% across 3,209 links in November 2024. These are results from distinct, dated tests with specific samples—not a prediction of protection against every current phishing attempt.

Does NordVPN work for streaming?
In Tom’s Guide’s review, NordVPN unblocked the Netflix libraries and Disney Plus locations tested, as well as BBC iPlayer, ITV, Channel, 10 Play and 9Now. Outcomes varied by service and location: in a March 27, 2026 retest, the reviewer had trouble with YouTube US and Amazon Prime in Australia, although those services worked in other tested locations.
Streaming access is a moving target. A service may change its VPN detection, and results can differ by country, server and date. Treat reviewer results as a snapshot, not a promise that a particular catalogue or service will work when you subscribe.

Which protocols and devices should you check?
Tom’s Guide describes NordLynx as based on WireGuard and says NordVPN also supports OpenVPN. The reviewer reports that OpenVPN is required for router installation and for obfuscated servers. Security.org says obfuscated-server access requires switching to OpenVPN, with a speed tradeoff; its review described those servers in 16 countries.
If you want to run the VPN through a router, check that the router supports VPN client mode—not merely VPN server features—and confirm that its configuration is compatible with NordVPN. A router purchase does not include a VPN subscription. On phones and computers, verify that the features you want are supported in the app for your operating system.
What should you check before paying?
The introductory monthly equivalent is not the full cost if it reflects a long upfront term or a promotional offer. Tom’s Guide warns of a substantial price increase at auto-renewal, and TechRadar also notes price rises while rating the service strongly on features and value. No single stable price applies universally; offers and billing terms can vary by region and date.
- Compare the total amount charged upfront, not only the advertised monthly equivalent.
- Find the renewal price and subscription term before checkout, and check whether renewal is automatic.
- Confirm which extras are included in the selected tier and whether they work on your devices.
- Read the refund conditions and cancellation process that apply in your region.
Who is NordVPN a good fit for?
NordVPN is a reasonable shortlist option if you want a mainstream VPN with multiple protocols, a broad reported server network and a choice of bundled extras. The higher tiers are most compelling when their additional tools replace services you would otherwise pay for and are available on your devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt may be a weaker fit if your decision depends on publicly accessible audit details, the clearest possible privacy-policy language, a specific streaming service in a particular country, or a low renewal cost. Compare providers and plans on policy clarity and assurance access, tested leak and kill-switch behavior, device support, location-specific streaming results, renewal terms and included tools; the evidence does not establish one universal best choice for every reader.
