Possibly in theory, but Sony’s patent application does not announce that FromSoftware bosses—or any specific game’s enemies—will change their tactics. Published on October 1, 2026, application US 2026/0295429 A1 describes a broad process for using data from player–NPC encounters to generate NPC content with a machine-learning model. Adapting a boss’s moves to a player is one possible interpretation, not a confirmed feature.
What does Sony’s application describe?
The application describes a pipeline: collect player data and video-game data from at least one encounter between a player and an NPC, use those data to generate input for a machine-learning model, then use NPC content returned by the model to modify game content. The patent abstract, as reproduced by patent-data explainer Patentlyze, says: “Input data for a machine learning model is generated from the player data and the video game data, and the input data is used to obtain non-player character content from the machine learning model.”

That description is broader than changing a boss’s attack pattern. The reported concept covers NPC content generally, including behavior and other character attributes. The application’s opening claim excerpt refers to data representing at least one player–NPC encounter while a game is running; it does not, in the excerpt reported by Patentlyze, limit the system to bosses, soulslikes, or combat.

It could, if a developer chose to use such a system to adjust an enemy’s tactics in response to a player. For example, an adaptive boss might react differently to repeated player habits. Wccftech offers the possibility of a boss entering a stronger second phase sooner when a player is under pressure. That is an illustrative scenario from coverage, not a stated requirement of the application or evidence of a feature in development.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The distinction matters: an enemy that changes its behavior could make one encounter less predictable, but the filing does not establish that players would face endlessly changing moves, or that familiar patterns would disappear. A developer could also use model-generated NPC content for changes that do not affect combat at all.
Does this mean FromSoftware or PlayStation is changing its games?
No specific game or studio is identified as adopting the system in the reported application details. The “FromSoftware-style” framing describes a possible use in a genre known for challenging boss encounters; it is not evidence that FromSoftware is involved. Sony Interactive Entertainment is the reported applicant, but a patent application is not a product announcement.

Patentlyze reports the application as US 2026/0295429 A1, filed March 31, 2025, and published October 1, 2026. It lists four inventors—Adrian Harris, Elizabeth Ruth Juenger, Crystal Fiel, and Bethany Tinklenberg—and 20 claims. The page reports a “Docketed New Case – Ready for Examination” status dated April 9, 2025. That is application-status information, not proof that a patent has been granted. Its “Medium” grant-likelihood label is the publisher’s estimate, not an official agency forecast.
What the filing leaves unanswered
Wccftech and Patentlyze report that the application does not specify a particular model architecture. The available descriptions also do not settle practical implementation questions, including:

- What changes: whether a game would adjust small behavior or balance details, or broader NPC content such as dialogue or appearance.
- When changes happen: whether adaptation would occur during an encounter or between encounters.
- Where processing happens: whether the system would run locally or remotely.
- How fair and predictable it feels: whether changes could be reversed or what limits would prevent an enemy from feeling arbitrary.
These are open design questions, not features established by the reported application. The coverage reviewed reports no empirical results showing that the system has been tested with players or that it improves game experiences.
What players should take from the patent
The filing describes a way to generate NPC content from player and game data using machine learning. It makes adaptive enemies a plausible area of interest, but it does not confirm that Sony will ship the system, that any PlayStation game will use it, or that a FromSoftware-style boss will stop being learnable. Until a developer announces an implementation, claims about changing boss fights remain speculation.
