Could an Ethernet Cable Be the Real Reason You Keep Replacing Your Router?

A bad Ethernet cable can mimic router trouble. Inspect the connectors, test with a known-good cable, and replace it only if the fault follows the cable.

A bad Ethernet cable can make a network connection slow or unreliable and can look like a router fault. A link light does not prove the cable is working cleanly. Before replacing a router, inspect the cable and test with one known to work. The ten-year-old cable in this headline is an anecdotal clue, not evidence that Ethernet cables expire at a set age.

How a cable problem can look like a router problem

An Ethernet cable can be damaged or marginal enough to corrupt traffic or interrupt a connection, yet still establish a physical link. Cisco puts it plainly: “A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional.” Its documentation also explains that a cable may connect at the physical layer while subtle damage to wiring or connectors corrupts packets. That can leave you with intermittent connectivity or poor performance even though the devices appear connected. Cisco: Troubleshoot Switch Port and Interface Problems

This does not mean every slow connection is caused by a cable. The available guidance does not establish how often cable faults occur compared with router faults, so there is no sound percentage to apply. Treat the cable as an easy component to isolate—not as the automatic culprit.

How to check whether the Ethernet cable is at fault

  1. Check the connection and visible condition. Firmly reseat both ends. Look for dirt or damage on the connectors, broken or missing pins, and cuts, crushing, or other visible damage along the cable.
  2. Swap in a known-good cable. Use one that you know works and that is suitable for the connected ports. Test the same devices and connection again. An unverified spare cable cannot give you a conclusive result.
  3. See whether the problem follows the cable. If the fault appears with the original cable but disappears with the known-good one, the original cable is the likely cause. If the problem remains, try another port where practical and continue checking the devices and other parts of the connection.
  4. Isolate longer or installed runs. For a cable routed through a wall or other equipment, a cable tester may help. Where practical, bypass intermediate patch panels or media converters to check whether the problem is in those components or the run. Cisco: Troubleshoot LAN Switching Environments

What cable to use for the test or replacement

Match the cable to the equipment and connection rather than choosing by age or appearance alone. Cisco identifies Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6 for typical 10/100/1000 Mbps copper links; the supported speed still depends on the devices and the cable’s condition. For a common gigabit copper connection, a suitable Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable is a reasonable replacement choice.

If the known-good swap points to the original patch cable, replace it. A tester is an optional aid for a long or installed run, not a necessary purchase to check an ordinary patch cable. Cisco’s guidance on categories and cable substitution is available in its switch-port troubleshooting documentation.

Why the cable’s age is not a diagnosis

A decade-old cable may deserve a closer look, but age alone does not prove it has failed. The story in the headline is an anecdote; it does not establish that all cables of that age are unreliable, or what category, construction, route, or measured performance that particular cable had. Base the decision on inspection and a controlled swap, not a presumed expiration date.
