Jeff Bezos says artificial-intelligence-driven productivity gains could eventually allow some people to support their families while working only three days a week. His comments, made in a Fox News interview broadcast on October 7, 2026, describe a possible future—not an announced shift to three-day schedules, guaranteed five-day pay, or an established economy-wide result.

In an interview with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, filmed on the Blue Origin factory floor in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Bezos connected shorter workweeks to what he expects AI to do for productivity. Fox News published Stepheny Price’s account of the interview on October 7, 2026; Fox News Media had announced it two days earlier, and Fox Nation lists the episode as a 25-minute interview dated October 7.

Bezos said: “Some people will also decide, you know what? I can support my family by working three days a week. That’s what productivity in the economy means.” The wording matters. He referred to “some people” making a choice “eventually,” not to every worker receiving a three-day schedule.

He also predicted that productivity could make it possible for some households to rely on one income. In his view, employers might then find hiring more difficult because people who do not need a second job would be less willing to work very long hours.

Why AI is central to his argument
Bezos presented AI as a general-purpose productivity technology rather than merely a tool for automating one office task. At Prometheus, which Fox identifies as a company he co-founded and co-leads, he described work toward an “artificial general engineer” intended to help people turn ideas into physical products.
He said AI could produce double-digit productivity gains across the economy. That figure is Bezos’s projection. Fox’s account does not provide a measured result, a defined time period, or an independent estimate supporting it, so it should not be read as an observed productivity statistic.

Bezos also said, “We’re going to make the tools so easy to use that anyone will be able to be an engineer.” That is a statement of the project’s ambition, not evidence that such a system has been released or that it has delivered the gains he described.

A shorter workweek can arise in very different ways, and Bezos’s forecast does not specify which path will dominate.

- Employer-imposed cuts: A company uses AI to complete the same work with fewer paid hours or fewer employees.
- Uneven distribution: Output increases, but most of the financial benefit goes to businesses or owners rather than to workers’ pay or free time.
Only the first outcome resembles the three-day choice Bezos highlighted. The interview does not establish how productivity gains would be divided among employees, employers and households, or whether shorter schedules would come with unchanged pay.
How the Amazon job-cut discussion fits
Baier raised roughly 30,000 Amazon corporate roles reportedly cut since late 2025. Bezos described Amazon as a special case following substantial pandemic-era workforce expansion. The exchange placed his optimistic AI forecast alongside immediate concerns about job losses.

That context does not show that the reported cuts were caused by AI. It also does not validate or disprove the three-day-workweek prediction. A company can reduce headcount after over-expansion for reasons unrelated to AI, while AI adoption elsewhere could still alter future staffing needs.

What would have to happen for the forecast to become reality?
- Productivity must rise in measurable work: AI systems would need to increase output or reduce costs reliably across many industries, not just in demonstrations.
- Workers must share in the gains: Higher output would need to appear as higher wages, lower living costs, shorter hours, or a combination of those outcomes.
- Businesses must accept shorter schedules: Employers would have to reorganize coverage, targets and benefits instead of simply using AI to eliminate roles or reduce hours without equivalent pay.
- Household finances must support the choice: Housing, health care, taxes and other fixed costs would determine whether a three-day schedule is practical for a particular family.
Without those conditions, AI could increase output while leaving working hours unchanged—or produce fewer jobs and more precarious employment instead of broadly shared free time.

Bottom line
Bezos’s three-day-workweek idea is a conditional forecast about how AI might reshape productivity and household income. As of the October 7, 2026 interview, no evidence presented there shows that employers have adopted such a schedule, that AI has delivered the predicted double-digit gains, or that productivity improvements will be distributed in a way that lets most families work less.
