Those figures are announcement-era results, not a universal guarantee: the published announcement does not disclose the test protocol, sample size, statistics or complete dataset.
What the dual-membrane pump is intended to change
The DuaFLO BioPump, described by VentriLabs on October 8, 2026, uses a synchronized dual-membrane pumping mechanism. The company says the two membranes generate continuous flow without the pressure pulses associated with many conventional pumping approaches, while producing substantially less shear.

That matters in cell-culture and other bioprocessing loops because mechanical stress can damage shear-sensitive cells or alter their metabolism. The announcement describes a head-to-head comparison in which mammalian cells undergoing continuous TFF perfusion were circulated with the DuaFLO system or with a magnetically levitated centrifugal reference pump. According to the announcement, the DuaFLO condition produced substantially lower ammonia and lactate levels and an average 25% increase in IgG antibody productivity.

The evidence has important limits. The announcement does not identify the number of replicates, cell density, flow and pressure settings, shear measurements, statistical method or full underlying data. The 25% figure therefore describes that reported comparison, not an expected increase for every cell line, viscosity, membrane or TFF process.

VentriLabs said the pump was entering early access. The announcement does not establish a public price or broad commercial availability.
How lower shear could affect TFF perfusion
In continuous TFF perfusion, a culture is circulated past a membrane. The membrane retains cells while allowing selected fluid and dissolved components to pass through. The pump determines how that suspension moves through the loop. Rapid changes in acceleration, local pressure or flow direction can increase mechanical stress; a steadier profile can reduce those peaks.

A synchronized membrane drive can, in principle, alternate displacement between two pumping chambers so that one chamber takes over as the other completes its stroke. The intended result is a more even output than a strongly pulsating single-chamber cycle. The announcement describes this operating principle and reports lower shear, but it does not publish a complete fluid-dynamic characterization. Users should request pressure traces, validated shear data and operating envelopes before treating the claim as established for their own process.

No evidence in the available publications establishes that they are the same device. The pump announcement concerns a fluid-moving machine. A separate peer-reviewed 2026 study describes a flat-sheet dual-membrane cassette for single-pass TFF diafiltration. Both use “dual membrane” terminology, but the sources do not say that the pump contains that cassette.

What single-pass diafiltration does
In single-pass diafiltration, feed moves through the TFF cassette while fresh buffer is supplied and permeate is removed. Small contaminants below the membrane cutoff—including salts and media components—can be continuously washed out without repeatedly diluting and reconcentrating the entire batch. The Helling et al. study also reports optional simultaneous ultrafiltration, allowing concentration while buffer exchange takes place.
The study describes a closed configuration suitable for aseptic or bioburden-controlled processing and handling that is analogous to conventional scalable TFF cassettes. Its results are configuration-specific, not guarantees for every membrane or pump.

The authors state that outcomes depended significantly on process parameters. Membrane cutoff, viscosity, temperature, protein loading, pump settings and the chosen diafiltration volume can all change the result.
How to evaluate a low-shear pump for your process
- Define the sensitive material. Record cell type, viable cell density, antibody or protein concentration, viscosity and known shear limits.
- Specify the hydraulic window. Set required flow, pressure, membrane area, transmembrane pressure and allowable pulsation before comparing pumps.
- Ask for comparable data. Request pressure and flow traces, shear methodology, replicate count, statistical analysis and test conditions—not only a headline productivity percentage.
- Measure biological endpoints. Track viability, growth, ammonia, lactate, product titer and quality attributes under matched operating conditions.
- Check process integration. Confirm sensor accuracy, air handling, priming, cleaning or disposal procedures, single-use compatibility and control-system interfaces.
- Run a controlled qualification. Compare the candidate with the incumbent pump using the same cells, membrane, residence time and harvest criteria.
Single-pass versus recirculating diafiltration
- Single-pass: Feed crosses the membrane once while fresh buffer continuously replaces removed solvent and small solutes. It can reduce batch dilution and is the configuration examined in the dual-membrane cassette paper.
- Recirculating: Retentate returns to the feed vessel and repeatedly passes the membrane. This is common in conventional TFF concentration and diafiltration, but the recirculation pump exposes the product or cells to repeated hydraulic conditions.
Neither arrangement is automatically superior. The choice depends on product stability, buffer consumption, available membrane area, target concentration and the validated operating window.

What the current evidence supports
The October 2026 announcement supports investigating the DuaFLO mechanism as a potentially lower-shear option for continuous TFF perfusion. It does not yet establish performance across all cell densities, viscosities, pressures or membrane types. The separate 2026 cassette paper supports the feasibility of scalable single-pass diafiltration with optional concentration and reports high buffer-exchange values under specified conditions. It should not be read as proof that the announced pump delivers those cassette results.
