China’s Lufeng Nuclear Power Station reached two separately reported milestones in October 2026: welding of the main nuclear-island pipelines at Unit 6 was completed on 28 September, while a pressuriser was installed at Unit 1. The activities show different stages of work on individual reactors, not completion of the six-reactor station.
What was announced in October 2026
NucNet reported on 13 October 2026 that the main pipeline welding inside Lufeng Unit 6’s nuclear island had been completed on 28 September. The report said this work lays the basis for nuclear-loop flushing and cold hydraulic testing, which are subsequent testing activities. It did not describe Unit 6 as complete or operational.

The same report identified pressuriser installation at Unit 1 as another milestone. Because the report does not give a separate installation date, it should be treated as a current project update rather than assigned an unsupported event date. The Unit 1 and Unit 6 developments are distinct and should not be combined into a single station-wide progress figure.

The available announcements cover different kinds of work, so a dome hoist, structural-module placement, pipeline welding and a functional test are not interchangeable measures of progress. The useful comparison is the milestone, its date and what it enables next.

Unit 6: from dome hoisting to pipeline testing
China General Nuclear reported that the Unit 6 reactor-building dome was hoisted on 14 July 2025. The company described that event as marking the transition from civil construction to equipment installation. The later pipeline-welding completion is a different, more advanced system-installation milestone.
Pipeline welding in the nuclear island is followed by activities that verify system cleanliness, integrity and hydraulic performance. At Lufeng, the reported sequence is loop flushing followed by cold hydraulic testing. These are performed without reactor operation and should not be read as fuel loading, grid connection or commercial service.

Unit 1 and Unit 2 construction context
Unit 1
CGN said the CA03 module for Unit 1’s nuclear island was hoisted into place on 23 January 2026. Pressuriser installation, reported later in October, represents another equipment milestone, but the available announcement does not provide a percentage complete or a complete schedule for the unit.

On 6 February 2026, CGN reported positioning the steel containment-vessel bottom head at the center of Unit 2’s reactor-building raft foundation. This is a foundation and containment-assembly step. It cannot be compared directly with Unit 6’s completed welding or Unit 5’s functional test.

Unit 5 has reached testing, not station-wide operation
CGN reported that Unit 5 completed its cold functional test on 27 April 2026. The company said inspectors examined the unit at a maximum pressure platform of 223 bar.g on 26 April. A cold functional test checks relevant systems under pressure and without normal reactor operating conditions.
That result is a commissioning milestone for Unit 5 only. It does not mean all six planned reactors are commissioned, and it does not establish that Lufeng is producing electricity commercially.

When are the reactors expected to operate?
CGN Power’s 2025 annual report listed expected operation in 2027 for Unit 5, 2028 for Unit 6, and 2030 for Units 1 and 2. These are company forecasts, not guaranteed dates or a new confirmation that each reactor will meet its target.
The same filing warns that delivery delays, higher equipment or material costs, regulatory approvals, engineering or environmental issues, and changing safety requirements could affect construction. Actual operation dates may therefore differ from the years in the report.

What is known about the overall project?
NucNet describes Lufeng as a six-reactor project in Guangdong, southern China. The information available for this update does not establish a complete unit-by-unit reactor-design breakdown, total capacity, overall construction percentage, workforce, project cost or a single station completion date. Those figures should not be inferred from the individual milestones.
What the latest progress means
The October announcement confirms parallel progress: Unit 6 is preparing for system flushing and cold hydraulic tests, while Unit 1 is still receiving major equipment. Unit 5 is further along in commissioning tests, and Units 1 and 2 remain on the longer construction path reflected in CGN Power’s forecast operation year of 2030. The station’s status is therefore best understood unit by unit, rather than as one completed project.
