For everyday wear, a loose, soft cotton T-shirt is a sensible starting point; for sports or heavy sweating, a lightweight polyester shirt designed to wick moisture and dry quickly may feel better. Neither fabric is right for every child: fit, fabric construction, seams, tags, temperature and the child’s own comfort all matter.
Is cotton or polyester better for kids’ T-shirts?
It depends on what the child will be doing. Cotton absorbs sweat, which can feel comfortable in ordinary low-sweat wear but may leave a shirt heavy when it becomes saturated. Polyester can be a good choice for activity when the garment is engineered to move sweat across the fabric and dry quickly. The fiber label alone does not tell you whether a shirt will do that well.

New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension describes cotton and cotton blends as comfortable options for young children, while textile experts quoted by the Associated Press explain that fabric construction affects how garments handle heat and moisture. There is no established child-specific head-to-head statistic showing that one fiber is universally more comfortable.
Which T-shirt fabric is cooler for kids?
For everyday, low-sweat wear
A soft, loose cotton tee is a practical default. Cotton’s absorbency can feel comfortable when a child is not sweating heavily. A soft polyester shirt may also work if it fits well, but polyester content by itself does not establish that the shirt is breathable or will manage sweat effectively.

For sports and heavy sweating
Consider a lightweight polyester shirt specifically designed to wick moisture and dry quickly. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends trying moisture-wicking fabric for sports and notes that a child’s response can depend on the fabric and activity. Cotton absorbs sweat; when saturated, it can become heavy and less comfortable.
Not every polyester shirt is moisture-wicking. Construction and treatment affect performance, so do not assume that a “100% polyester” label means the garment will keep a child comfortable in heat. A dense or untreated shirt may allow sweat to build up against the skin.

What fabric is best for a child with eczema?
For children with eczema, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends loose-fitting 100% cotton clothing and advises avoiding synthetic fibers such as polyester, which can trigger eczema. This is eczema-specific guidance, not proof that every child prefers cotton.

How to choose a comfortable T-shirt
- Check the fit: Choose enough room for the child to move during the intended activity; tight clothing can feel uncomfortable, especially in heat.
- Feel the fabric: A soft hand feel matters, but softness alone does not show how well a shirt will handle sweat.
- Inspect the details: Look for a comfortable neckline and seams and tags that do not rub or irritate.
- Match the shirt to the activity: Cotton is a reasonable everyday option; for sport, try a moisture-wicking shirt during the relevant activity and see how the child responds.
- Wash before first wear: This is useful for new clothing, including sportswear. For eczema, follow the AAD’s detergent and tag-removal guidance.
- Pay attention after activity: Change the child out of wet or sweaty clothing promptly.
When cotton gets fully wet, evaporation may help it dry, but the saturated fabric can also block breathability and feel uncomfortable, as textile expert Po-Chun Hsu explained to the Associated Press. That is why a garment’s construction and how wet it gets can matter as much as its fiber name.

They can be, particularly when they are lightweight, fit comfortably and are designed to wick and dry quickly during activity. But polyester is not automatically cooler or more comfortable: an untreated or dense shirt may not move moisture effectively. For a child without eczema, compare the actual shirt’s softness, fit, seams and weight, then let the child’s experience guide the choice.
