Pokémon games do not share one universal save or transfer system. A game’s save stays governed by that game and console; Pokémon HOME boxes are separate; and online requirements depend on the particular feature. Before moving a console or Pokémon, check the rules for the exact game and transfer route.
What is the difference between a game save and Pokémon HOME?
A save file belongs to a particular game and its console or device. Pokémon HOME is a separate service for storing and moving Pokémon between supported games. Having a Pokémon in HOME does not mean the save file for its original game has moved with it.

This distinction matters when changing consoles: HOME may be available on the new console, but linking it to a game requires that game’s save to be present there. Pokémon Support’s Switch 2 FAQ says the save must be on the console where HOME is launched for HOME to link with titles such as Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

Will Pokémon HOME work after I move to a new Switch?
Pokémon Support confirms HOME can be used on Switch 2. If the game save you need is still on your old console, HOME may not be able to link to that game on the new one. The FAQ recommends using Nintendo’s system-transfer feature with the same Nintendo Account when moving to Switch 2; it can move data, including game saves.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Choose a system-transfer method carefully
| Transfer method | What the Pokémon Support FAQ says | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Local communication | The original Switch is not reset. | Consult Nintendo’s instructions to confirm which users and saves will move for your situation. |
| Server transfer | The original Switch is reset. | Do not start this route unless you understand the effect on the old console and have checked Nintendo’s transfer instructions. |
The FAQ points users to Nintendo for the step-by-step process. If you have multiple users or want to move only selected saves, check Nintendo’s instructions before starting rather than assuming the transfer will affect only one game or account.
Is a Nintendo Switch Online membership required to use Pokémon HOME?
No. Pokémon Support says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME. That answer applies to HOME; it does not establish whether a specific game’s trading, battling, cloud backup, or other online feature requires a membership. HOME’s Switch and mobile versions also differ, and available features can vary by plan. Check Pokémon Support’s current Premium Plan information for the feature details that matter to you.
How do I use the same Pokémon HOME boxes on Switch and mobile?
Link the Switch and mobile versions to the same Nintendo Account. Pokémon Support’s setup guidance warns that if you start the mobile version without linking the account used or intended for Switch HOME, the two versions will not access the same boxes.

An unlinked guest account cannot be recovered if it is lost. If you already started on mobile, check which Nintendo Account is linked before making changes or transferring Pokémon; do not assume the two versions share boxes merely because they use the same device owner or email address.
Why do Pokémon details or moves look different in HOME or another game?
Displayed information can depend on the connected game
HOME’s displayed information may depend on the game linked to it. If a Pokémon is unavailable in that title, some details may not appear. Pokémon Support states: “Pokémon HOME only changes the displayed information and does not overwrite Pokémon data.” A different-looking or incomplete summary in HOME is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the Pokémon has been permanently changed.
Move sets are specific to each game
If a Pokémon enters a game where it cannot use its current moves, the target game’s allowed move set replaces the active set for that game. HOME retains move sets per linked game; when the Pokémon returns to a game it has visited, its move set for that game is restored. Moves are not a universal set that works identically in every title.

Can every Pokémon move between every game?
No universal compatibility rule covers every species, game, and direction of travel. Availability depends on the specific title and transfer route. A Pokémon may be unavailable in a target game, and displayed details or permitted moves may differ there. Check Pokémon Support’s current compatibility information for both the species and the direction of travel before depositing or withdrawing a valuable Pokémon. The general rules above do not establish whether a particular Pokémon can enter a particular game.
How do Pokémon Quest and Pokémon GO handle saves and transfers?
| Game or route | Save or transfer rule | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Quest: Switch and mobile | The two versions’ saves are incompatible; there is no cross-save functionality. | Moving a save between devices uses Quest’s Backup ID and Backup Key process, not a shared Switch/mobile save. |
| Pokémon GO to HOME | The transfer into HOME is one-way. | A Pokémon sent from GO cannot be returned to GO. Some special Pokémon cannot be transferred. |
| Some Pokémon GO transfers to Sword or Shield | Additional conditions may apply. | The official guidance describes requirements involving registration in that game’s Pokédex or having obtained the Pokémon there before transfer. |
Before transferring a Pokémon Quest save
Quest’s Backup ID and Backup Key transfer restores the save from the last backup. It overwrites save data already on the destination, prevents continuing with that same save on the old device, and requires a one-day wait before another transfer. Treat this as moving a save, not syncing two devices.
Before sending a Pokémon from GO to HOME
Check the current transfer eligibility rules first, especially for special Pokémon or a later move into Sword or Shield. The GO-to-HOME transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online or HOME Premium, according to Pokémon Support, but it cannot be reversed back into GO.
What to check before moving a console, save, or Pokémon
- Moving consoles: Confirm that the relevant game save will be on the console where you plan to launch HOME, and follow Nintendo’s instructions for the transfer method you choose.
- Sharing HOME boxes: Verify that Switch and mobile HOME use the same Nintendo Account before relying on shared access.
- Moving a Pokémon: Check the current official compatibility guidance for the exact source game, target game, Pokémon, and transfer direction.
- Protecting a save: Read the game’s own backup or transfer rules. A device transfer, cross-save feature, and HOME transfer are different operations.
- Checking online access: Treat HOME’s membership rule separately from the requirements for a game’s other online features.
Pokémon Support’s cited HOME, Quest, and GO guidance was updated January 30, 2026; the Switch 2 FAQ was also current in the support material accessed October 4, 2026. Because transfer procedures and compatibility can change, check the applicable official support page again before acting.
