Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When a Coresignal request returns no data, read the HTTP status and response headers before changing the query. A 401 usually means the apikey header is wrong, a 402 means the account lacks credits, a 422 means the JSON shape or data types are invalid, and a 429 means the endpoint is throttling you. A successful 200 response can still look empty when you have displayed only the first page.
The reliable troubleshooting order is authentication, route and method, request-body validation, pagination, credits and size limits, rate limiting, and service health. The sections below show what to inspect, the exact pagination headers to follow, and how to recover from bulk-request and throttling failures.

Start with the raw status code and headers
Do not begin by broadening filters or rewriting your parser. Capture the complete HTTP response, including headers, status, and body. Coresignal documents distinct meanings for the major response classes:
| Status | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | The request succeeded. An apparently empty application view may be a pagination or parsing problem. | Read the result count and pagination headers, then inspect the raw body. |
| 400 | A required parameter is missing or unacceptable. | Compare every required field with the endpoint schema and check spelling, nulls, and formats. |
| 401 | The API key is invalid or was not accepted. | Verify the key value and the exact header name. |
| 402 | There are not enough credits for the operation. | Check the remaining-credit header and account balance before retrying. |
| 404 | The URL or requested identifier does not exist. | Check the API family, path, identifier, and environment. |
| 422 | The submitted data has an invalid structure or data type. | Validate JSON nesting, arrays, dates, and identifier types against the schema. |
| 429 | The endpoint rate limit was exceeded. | Stop sending requests, apply backoff, and resume below the product-specific limit. |
| 500, 502, 503, or another 5xx | A server, gateway, or availability problem; an incorrect request method can also produce a 500 according to the response-code documentation. | Recheck method and route once, then inspect the official service-status page for an incident. |
Save a response sample with its timestamp, endpoint, method, status, request ID (if present), and relevant headers. This separates an API problem from a client that discards errors or treats an empty array as a successful result.

Fix authentication before changing the query
Every request must carry the API key in a header named exactly apikey. Coresignal’s authorization documentation states: "All requests must contain an API Key header. Its value is your unique API Key." The key is obtained from the self-service platform.
curl -i -X POST 'https://api.coresignal.com/cdapi/v1/employee_base/search'
-H 'apikey: YOUR_API_KEY'
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"name":"Ada Lovelace"}'
Use the same header spelling and casing shown in the documentation. Do not put the key in the JSON body, a query-string parameter, or an unrelated authorization header unless the endpoint documentation explicitly requires it. In a browser-based application, keep the key on a server you control rather than exposing it in client-side JavaScript.
Authentication checks that catch common mistakes
- Confirm that the process making the request actually receives the environment variable or secret; print a redacted presence check, not the key itself.
- Check for copied whitespace, quotation marks, or a trailing newline in the secret.
- Make sure a proxy, API gateway, or HTTP client is not stripping the custom header.
- Reproduce the call with
curl -ior an equivalent raw HTTP client so you can see the status before your application transforms it. - If the raw response is 401, obtain a fresh key from the self-service platform and test it against the documented endpoint.
Use the correct API family, route, and HTTP method
Coresignal separates products by entity, such as company, employee, and jobs data. Select the API family that matches the records you are querying, then copy the documented route exactly. Search endpoints are POST requests; sending a search payload with GET, or posting to a collect route, can lead to a failed request and in some cases a 500 response.

Verify the route systematically
- Identify the entity you need: company, employee, jobs, or another documented product.
- Open that product’s endpoint definition and copy its path, including every version segment.
- Confirm that the method is POST for a search operation and that your client has not silently changed it during redirects.
- Check whether the endpoint expects a search operation, a single-record lookup, or a collect operation; these have different paths and payloads.
- For an ID lookup, verify that the ID belongs to the same entity and API family. A valid-looking ID in the wrong route can return 404.
Log the final URL and method produced by your HTTP library. This catches configuration errors in which a base URL, version prefix, or trailing path segment is duplicated or omitted.
Validate the JSON body for 400 and 422 responses
A 400 generally indicates that a required parameter is missing or unacceptable. A 422 indicates that the server received JSON but could not use its structure or types. Treat them differently from authentication failures: changing the key will not repair malformed data.

Body-validation checklist
- Match field names exactly, including underscores and capitalization.
- Keep nesting identical to the endpoint schema; a field inside the wrong object can be rejected even when its name is correct.
- Send arrays where arrays are required and scalar values where scalars are required.
- Use the documented date representation and identifier type. Do not send a numeric ID as a string, or a string date as a locale-formatted date, unless the schema permits it.
- Remove unknown fields while testing. Add optional filters back one at a time.
- Ensure the JSON is valid and that your HTTP client sends
Content-Type: application/json.
python - <<'PY'
import json
payload = {
"filters": {"country": "GB"},
"limit": 100
}
print(json.dumps(payload))
PY
Start with the smallest valid request documented for the endpoint. Once it returns a known result, add filters incrementally and record which addition changes the response. This distinguishes an invalid field from a valid filter that simply matches no records.
Understand why a 200 response can appear empty
A 200 status proves that the request was accepted; it does not prove that your interface has loaded the whole result set. Coresignal returns IDs in pages of up to 1,000 and exposes the total and continuation information in headers.
Recommended Free Tools
| Header | How to use it |
|---|---|
x-total-results |
Total number of matching results for the query. |
x-total-pages |
Number of result pages available. |
x-next-page-after |
Cursor for the next request. Pass its value as the after query parameter. |
If x-total-results is greater than zero but your application shows no rows, inspect the body parser and the field from which you read IDs. If the first response contains IDs and x-next-page-after, request the next page instead of assuming the dataset ended.
Cursor-based pagination example
curl -i -X POST 'https://api.coresignal.com/cdapi/v1/employee_base/search'
-H 'apikey: YOUR_API_KEY'
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"name":"Ada Lovelace"}'
Suppose the response headers include x-total-results: 2400, x-total-pages: 3, and x-next-page-after: 1000. The next call keeps the same search body and adds the cursor:
curl -i -X POST 'https://api.coresignal.com/cdapi/v1/employee_base/search?after=1000'
-H 'apikey: YOUR_API_KEY'
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"name":"Ada Lovelace"}'
Continue with the newly returned x-next-page-after until that header is absent or empty. Do not calculate an offset by guessing; use the cursor supplied by the response. Your loop should also stop on a repeated cursor, an unexpected page size, or a non-200 response so a server or parser defect cannot create an infinite loop.

Pagination implementation pattern
after = None
while True:
url = SEARCH_URL if after is None else f'{SEARCH_URL}?after={after}'
response = post(url, headers={'apikey': API_KEY}, json=payload)
response.raise_for_status()
page = response.json()
consume_ids(page)
next_after = response.headers.get('x-next-page-after')
if not next_after or next_after == after:
break
after = next_after
Keep the query body unchanged across pages. Changing filters while reusing a cursor can produce missing or duplicated records because the cursor belongs to the original result set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck credits separately from result counts
Credits and pagination answer different questions. A query can have matching records but fail before returning them because the account cannot pay for the operation. Coresignal states that successful search and collect requests consume credits and exposes the remaining balance in x-credits-remaining. Insufficient credits produce HTTP 402.
Credit troubleshooting
- Read
x-credits-remainingfrom a successful response and record it with your request metrics. - Check whether your code retries successful responses. Repeating a search or collect call can consume credits again.
- Estimate the cost of all pages, not only the first page, before starting a large collection.
- When the response is 402, stop automatic retries; they cannot succeed until the account has sufficient credits.
- After credits are replenished, rerun a small request first and verify both status and remaining-credit headers.
Do not infer an empty dataset from a client-side message such as "no results" until you have confirmed that the raw response was 200 and that the credit header was present.
Respect bulk-collection limits and processing time
Bulk Collect has its own constraints. A request must stay within 10,000 retrieved profiles, and the limit parameter can cap the amount returned. A bulk request that exceeds the documented maximum is rejected rather than silently truncated.
Bulk request workflow
- Use a search or ID-selection step to produce the records you intend to collect.
- Set
limitso the request remains at or below 10,000 profiles. - Submit the bulk request and save its
data_request_id. - Poll
/v2/data_requests/{data_request_id}/filesat a measured interval. - Wait until the files response contains a filename. No filename means processing is still in progress, not that the result is empty.
- Download each file within 30 days of submission. Each file can contain up to 10,000 JSON records.
- Persist the downloaded file and request metadata so a transient download failure does not force a new credit-consuming collection.
Split larger jobs into multiple requests below the 10,000-profile ceiling. Keep a manifest of IDs per request, because it lets you identify which batch failed without repeating completed batches.

curl -i 'https://api.coresignal.com/v2/data_requests/DATA_REQUEST_ID/files'
-H 'apikey: YOUR_API_KEY'
Polling too aggressively can trigger rate limits. Use an increasing delay, honor any retry guidance in the response, and treat a missing filename as a processing state rather than a successful zero-result state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle 429 responses with endpoint-specific backoff
A 429 means the request rate for that operation has been exceeded. The published 2026 limits include 18 search requests per second for several Company, Employee, and Jobs API products, but limits vary by product and operation. Do not apply 18 requests per second as a universal allowance.
Safe retry behavior
- Pause new work as soon as a 429 is observed.
- Use exponential backoff with jitter, for example one second, two seconds, four seconds, and so on, capped at a sensible maximum.
- Honor a
Retry-Afterheader if the response supplies one. - Throttle concurrency globally, not independently in every worker.
- Retry only idempotent or safely repeatable operations. Record whether a prior request may have succeeded before resubmitting a credit-consuming collect call.
- Measure requests per second over the same interval used by the documented limit; short bursts can still trip a gateway even when the one-minute average looks acceptable.
import random, time
def wait_before_retry(attempt, retry_after=None):
if retry_after is not None:
delay = float(retry_after)
else:
delay = min(60, 2 ** attempt) + random.random()
time.sleep(delay)
Rate limiting is independent of credits. Adding credits will not remove a 429, and slowing requests will not repair a 402.
Rule out a service incident after the request is valid
When authentication, route, method, body, credits, and request rate are all verified, a 502, 503, or other 5xx may reflect a server or gateway problem. Check Coresignal's official status page for an active incident and note its start time.
Use a small, previously successful request as a health probe. If that probe and your production request fail with the same 5xx while the status page reports an incident, pause retries or use a queue with a long backoff. If the probe succeeds, compare the failing request's endpoint, payload size, and method with the probe rather than labeling the entire service unavailable.
Best Value
Follow this end-to-end diagnostic sequence
- Capture the raw exchange. Record URL, method, status, body, and headers using an HTTP client that does not hide errors.
- Confirm authentication. Send the key in the exact
apikeyheader and test a minimal documented request. - Confirm product and method. Match company, employee, jobs, or another entity to its route; use POST for search endpoints.
- Validate the body. Check required fields, nesting, arrays, date formats, and identifier types.
- Classify a 200 correctly. Read the result-count and pagination headers before declaring success or failure.
- Follow cursors. Request each subsequent page with the returned
aftervalue and keep the original body unchanged. - Check account capacity. Inspect
x-credits-remaining, the requested page count, and any bulk size against account and endpoint limits. - Control traffic. Apply product-specific throttling and backoff for 429 responses.
- Check availability. Consult the status page for persistent 5xx responses after the request is known to be valid.
Match the symptom to the remedy
| Observed symptom | Likely cause | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| 401 immediately | Missing, malformed, or invalid key | Send the current key in the exact apikey header and test outside the application. |
| 400 with a validation message | Required or acceptable parameter problem | Compare the payload with the endpoint schema and remove or correct the offending field. |
| 422 after changing JSON nesting | Invalid structure or data type | Restore the documented object and array shapes, then add fields incrementally. |
| 404 for a known record | Wrong API family, path, version, or ID | Copy the route from the matching product and verify the identifier's entity. |
| 200 with an empty screen but positive total | Parser defect or only the first page was loaded | Inspect the raw body and follow x-next-page-after. |
| 402 during a large job | Insufficient credits | Stop retries, check remaining credits, and recalculate the cost of all pages or batches. |
| 429 during polling or parallel searches | Endpoint throttling | Reduce concurrency, add jittered backoff, and use the documented limit for that operation. |
| 502 or 503 for a minimal valid request | Service or gateway incident | Check the official status page and retry conservatively after recovery. |
Build observability so the problem does not recur
Log enough context to diagnose the next failure without logging secrets or sensitive payloads. A useful request record contains:
- UTC timestamp, endpoint family, path, HTTP method, and client build.
- Status code, latency, response size, and a redacted error body.
x-total-results,x-total-pages,x-next-page-after, andx-credits-remainingwhen present.- Page cursor, batch size, bulk
data_request_id, and filename state. - Retry count, backoff duration, and concurrent-worker count.
Alert on sustained 401, 402, 422, or 429 rates separately from 5xx rates. Those signals point to different owners and fixes: credentials, account capacity, application validation, traffic control, or service availability. Add a test that follows at least two pages whenever a fixture contains more than 1,000 IDs; this catches regressions that display only the first page.
Capacity context for large result sets
Coresignal's 2026 documentation describes a dataset of more than 4.5 billion company, employee, and jobs records. That scale explains why searches are paginated and why a narrow, correctly formed query can still return no matches. It does not change the diagnostic order: a large corpus cannot compensate for an invalid key, wrong route, malformed body, exhausted credits, or an unhandled cursor.
Once the raw response is classified, the fix is usually specific: correct the request, continue pagination, reduce a bulk job, replenish credits, slow the client, or wait for service recovery. Treating every empty screen as a query problem is what makes these incidents take longer than necessary.
