For holes, use the drill mode; for screws, use the numbered clutch. Then match the gear and technique to the job. Mixing up those controls—or rushing the start—can leave screws proud, strip their heads, split wood, or make drilling harder than it needs to be.
1. Leaving the numbered clutch on while drilling a hole
The numbered clutch limits torque when driving a fastener. Once the drill reaches the selected limit, it can slip or stop turning the screw. That is useful for controlling screw depth, but it can interrupt drilling a hole.

For a hole in wood, metal, or plastic, select the drill icon or drill mode if your tool has one. Use the numbered clutch for screws. Some models put the mode selector and clutch on separate collars, so identify each control on your own drill rather than assuming one ring does both jobs. The Makita DDF482 manual and RYOBI Support Australia’s drill-driver guidance describe these distinctions for their respective tools.

If your drill has a hammer mode, that is intended for masonry or brick on models with that feature—not ordinary wood, metal, or plastic drilling. Check your model’s instructions for which modes it offers and when to use them.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight design fits into tight areas
- High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
- High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
- 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control
2. Choosing the wrong gear—or expecting speed to provide torque
The gear selector changes the drill’s speed and torque range. A faster gear is not automatically better: screwdriving and controlled drilling often call for a slower, more controllable setting.
- Gear 1: RYOBI’s general guidance assigns this to screwdriving and controlled drilling where higher torque is useful.
- Gear 2: The same guidance says this supports faster drilling in wood or metal.
Those are RYOBI’s recommendations, not a universal prescription for every cordless drill. Match the gear to the task, bit, and material, and use the manual for your specific model. Do not try to compensate for a slowing drill simply by pressing harder or selecting a faster gear; excessive pressure can hurt performance and damage the bit.

3. Starting too fast, holding the bit at an angle, or forcing a slowing drill
A driver bit that is not seated straight in the screw head can slip out and damage the bit or fastener. Start with the bit aligned squarely, begin slowly, and increase speed gradually as the screw catches. Stop when the clutch cuts in rather than continuing to push.

Makita’s DDF482 manual states, “Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed up the drilling.” The manual warns that excess pressure can damage the bit, reduce performance, and shorten tool life. Hold the drill firmly, secure the workpiece in a vise or similar hold-down, and take care as the bit breaks through, when force on the tool and bit can be substantial.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
4. Driving a wood screw without a pilot hole when the material may split
A pilot hole can make a wood screw easier to drive and reduce the risk of splitting, particularly when working in material prone to splitting. For the DDF482, Makita advises making a pilot hole about two-thirds the screw’s diameter. Treat that as guidance from that model’s manual, not a universal ratio: the appropriate hole depends on the screw, wood, and task.
Drill the pilot hole with a bit suited to the material, then switch to the correct driver bit for the fastener. If you are unsure about sizing or technique, consult the drill and fastener instructions rather than relying on a single rule of thumb.

How to set the clutch for a screw
- Choose screw mode and a low clutch setting. If your drill has separate mode and clutch controls, set both as directed in its manual.
- Test on scrap or duplicate material. Drive a screw and check whether it sits at the depth you want.
- Increase the setting gradually if needed. Repeat the test until the screw is set correctly, then use that setting for comparable work.
Clutch numbers are not a standardized torque scale across drills, so there is no reliable universal number to recommend. Makita advises testing in the actual material or a duplicate piece; Pro Tool Reviews also recommends beginning low and increasing the setting until the screw is set as desired. See Pro Tool Reviews’ explanation of drill clutch settings.

Safety checks before you start
- Remove the battery before adjusting the tool, checking its functions, or changing bits, following your drill’s manual.
- Secure the workpiece instead of holding it by hand, and hold the drill firmly.
- Use a bit matched to the material or fastener, and confirm it is suitable for your chuck and drill.
- Follow the manual for operating procedure, protective equipment, material limits, and approved accessories.
The Makita DDF482 instructions provide these precautions for that model. Your drill’s manual is the authority for its specific controls and safety requirements.
