AI-assisted development in 2026 is shifting from code suggestions toward agents that can take on connected steps of software work. Developers are using these tools regularly, but adoption does not mean full delegation: people still set direction, validate results and own the software that ships. The biggest changes are in how teams organize that work—and in the quality, security and governance practices needed to support it.
How is AI-assisted development changing?
The center of gravity is moving from autocomplete and chat toward workflows that can span planning, implementation, testing and review. That does not mean every coding tool can reliably complete every stage. It describes a product direction: AI systems are being designed to handle more connected work, while developers decide what to delegate and whether the result is acceptable.

From suggestions to multi-step work
Gartner describes enterprise coding agents as reaching across planning, code creation and review. Anthropic likewise expects AI to change engineering roles and software development lifecycle practices. These are descriptions of a direction and forecasts, not proof that autonomous end-to-end development is now routine.

Could IDEs become optional?
Gartner forecast in 2026 that, by 2027, more than 65% of engineering teams using agentic coding would treat integrated development environments (IDEs) as optional. That is a prediction about future workflows, not a measured 2026 outcome. Even if some work moves to command-line, cloud or repository-based interfaces, teams still need ways to inspect changes, run tests and understand what an agent has done.

Which AI coding tools do developers actually use at work?
In JetBrains Research’s Developer Ecosystem Survey 2026, more than 15,000 professional developers worldwide were surveyed. For the May–July 2026 period, 90% said they used AI coding agents at work at least weekly, and 68% said they used them daily. These are survey findings for that population and period, not a census or universal usage rate.
| Tool | Workplace adoption reported by JetBrains |
|---|---|
| Claude Code | 39% |
| GitHub Copilot | 21% |
| Codex | 16% |
| Cursor | 12% |
| JetBrains AI | About 9% |
| OpenCode | 7% |
The percentages are reported workplace adoption rates in that survey, not market shares; they should not be read as a universal ranking. An earlier JetBrains AI Pulse report, published in January 2026, found that 90% of respondents regularly used at least one AI tool for coding and development at work, while 74% had adopted specialized developer AI tools. Those figures concern different tool categories and an earlier survey, so they are not directly interchangeable with the agent-specific May–July results.
What are developers using AI or AI agents for?
Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey suggests that respondents most often use AI for technical tasks where they have some familiarity or can check the result. The reported uses were:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Use | Respondents reporting it |
|---|---|
| Generating code in a familiar area | 69.3% |
| Debugging, troubleshooting or refactoring | 63.8% |
| Answering straightforward technical questions | 59.4% |
| Writing or improving tests | 58.1% |
These results show a widening range of work, not that developers have handed off responsibility for it. Familiarity and ease of validation affect where respondents are comfortable using AI, making bounded tasks with checkable outputs a natural fit.
What changes for developers when agents do more?
The work shifts toward deciding what needs doing, breaking it into tasks, steering agents and evaluating the results. Anthropic’s 2026 report says engineers use AI in roughly 60% of their work but report being able to fully delegate only 0–20% of tasks. That finding reflects Anthropic’s research, not an official population-wide statistic. It illustrates why frequent use and full delegation are different measures.

Stack Overflow’s survey also points to validation as a condition of comfort with AI output. Microsoft VP of Developer Community Scott Hanselman described human judgment as important to getting specific results, framing AI as an augmentation to a developer rather than a substitute for one. The practical responsibility remains with the person or team deciding whether the change fits the intended problem.
Are multi-agent systems and longer-running tasks established?
They are a capability direction to watch, not a general capability that can be assumed of every current coding agent. Anthropic predicts that specialized agents may work in parallel and that task horizons could stretch from minutes to days or weeks. Its report presents these as predictions based on what it sees with customers, not certainties.
Such workflows would require more than launching several agents at once. Teams would need task decomposition, coordination protocols, visibility into concurrent sessions and version-control practices for simultaneous contributions. Without those controls, parallel work can create conflicting changes or make it harder to establish which output is ready to merge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does more AI use automatically make software teams more productive?
No. Google DORA’s 2025 research, based on more than 100 hours of qualitative research and responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals around the world, characterizes AI as an amplifier of an organization’s existing strengths and dysfunctions. That finding cautions against treating tool adoption or increased code output as proof of faster delivery or better software.
AI can help a team move through work, but the surrounding process still matters. Clear requirements, effective collaboration and dependable delivery practices shape whether generated work becomes a useful improvement or more work to diagnose and maintain. DORA’s evidence is from 2025, not a 2026 survey.

Why do quality, security and governance matter more as agents gain scope?
When a system can make broader changes, the consequences of accepting a weak or unsafe result can also grow. eu-LISA’s July 2026 report says AI coding assistants may support productivity gains, while calling for attention to security and quality, regular evaluation of tools and adequate resources to review generated code. The implication is operational: review and evaluation need to keep pace with the amount and scope of AI-assisted work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor organizations, choosing a tool is therefore not just a contest over which model writes the strongest code. Gartner identifies governance, pricing, customer support, workflow fit, commercial maturity and market durability as considerations for enterprise buyers. Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey also indicates that output quality and integration matter in tool choices. A practical evaluation should consider:
- Which tasks the tool can handle, from autocomplete and chat to multi-step implementation, testing or review.
- How it fits into the team’s IDE, command-line, cloud, repository and collaboration workflows.
- Whether developers can inspect changes, validate output and control when work proceeds.
- How the organization evaluates code quality and security, and whether review capacity is adequate.
- Governance, privacy, support, procurement and deployment requirements.
- How pricing and usage limits work; verify current terms because they can change.
Who may use AI-assisted coding beyond engineering?
Anthropic predicts that agentic coding will reach more non-engineering users, including people working in operations, design, cybersecurity and data science. That is a forecast and an emerging use pattern, not evidence that a non-specialist can safely build any production system without engineering review. Wider access may let more people prototype or automate bounded tasks, while production changes still call for appropriate technical ownership.
What should teams watch as AI-assisted development evolves?
The durable shift is not simply that AI writes more code. It is that teams are deciding how to distribute work among people and increasingly capable tools, where to place approval and review points, and how to measure whether the resulting software is actually better. Adoption figures describe how often surveyed developers use agents; they do not settle questions of quality, delivery performance or safe delegation. Those outcomes depend on the workflow and organization around the tools.
