You can save money by cutting cable in Canada, but the national figures do not show that households generally save thousands. The answer depends on what you cancel and what you add: compare your actual TV bill with the streaming, internet upgrades, equipment and other costs you would take on.
What do Canadian spending figures say about cord-cutting?
Canadian households’ spending has shifted from traditional broadcasting distribution undertakings (BDUs), such as cable and satellite providers, toward online services. But the figures are market averages, not a matched comparison of what the same households paid before and after switching.

| Estimated average monthly household expenditure | 2021 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| BDU services | $36.2 | $28.6 |
| Online undertakings | $25.7 | $34.7 |
The CRTC’s 2025 estimates are calculated by dividing category revenues by the number of Canadian households. In 2024, estimated online-undertaking expenditure per household was 9.7% higher than BDU expenditure. That does not mean every household paid more for streaming than for cable: a household that does not subscribe to multiple services may spend less, while another may pay for both a TV package and streaming.
Statistics Canada reported that prices for video and audio subscription services rose 21.0% from 2019 to 2024 and 52.7% from 2014 to 2024. It also reported $11.3 billion in Canadian household spending in 2024 on cable, satellite and other program distribution services, including streaming; that total is seasonally adjusted and in current prices. Neither statistic measures a typical cord-cutter’s savings.

How do you calculate your household’s annual savings?
Use your own bills, including taxes and the rates that will apply after promotions end. Count only costs that change because you switch. If you already pay for internet and keep the same plan, include any added internet expense—not the whole existing internet bill—in the net-change calculation. For context, you can also compare the full entertainment-plus-internet budget before and after.
Annual net savings = 12 × (current TV distribution bill − replacement streaming services − added internet cost − recurring equipment or service costs) − one-time equipment cost − cancellation or contract costs.
A positive result means the switch reduces your annual costs by that amount; a negative result means it costs more. Use monthly recurring costs after promotions in the calculation, then subtract one-time expenses separately. If your current TV bill is bundled with internet or another service, identify the actual price change when you remove TV rather than assuming the bundle discount will stay the same.

Build the comparison from actual charges
- Record the TV distribution charge, equipment rental and recurring fees you would stop paying.
- List every streaming service you would add or keep for the shows, channels, sports or events you watch.
- Include any internet-plan increase, data-related charge, new device or recurring service cost that switching would cause.
- Add any contract or cancellation costs that apply to your current service.
- Compare the total after introductory rates expire, and include taxes on both sides.
Do not treat the full internet bill as a new cord-cutting cost if you already need and pay for internet. Conversely, do not omit an upgrade if your current plan cannot support the viewing you expect.

What would you need to replace cable TV?
There is no single cable replacement that fits every household. Start with what you actually watch, especially live channels, local programming and particular sports or events. Then check whether the services you are considering carry that content in Canada, whether any restrictions apply to the event you want, and whether the apps work on the devices your household uses. Current lineups, rights, blackout restrictions and device support can change, so verify them with the provider before cancelling.
- Live channels and events: Check that the specific channels and events you watch are available, not just that a service advertises live programming.
- Local reception: Whether over-the-air reception is practical depends on your location and reception conditions.
- Household viewing: Check simultaneous-screen limits and whether the plan suits how many people watch at once.
- Equipment: A compatible smart TV, console or other supported device may already be enough. A streaming media player is optional when you have a device that can run the services you choose.
Streaming can replace some programming without replacing every feature of a TV package. If live sports or a particular channel drives your current subscription, price the service that actually provides it before treating the rest of the package as unnecessary.

Internet-delivered streaming needs an internet connection, but cancelling a TV package does not automatically mean you need a new broadband plan. If your household already has internet, assess whether it is reliable and suitable for the number of people and screens using it; add only the cost of an upgrade that you would make because of the switch.

Statistics Canada, reporting CRTC data for 2024 on a 2026 page, says 96.4% of Canadian households had access to unlimited broadband at a minimum of 50/10 Mbps. Average monthly high-speed residential broadband data use was 585.5 GB. Those are national figures, not a guarantee that a particular home has affordable service, sufficient performance or access to that connection.

Are Canadian households changing services to lower bills?
Yes, but survey results do not establish how much those households saved. In a 2026 CRTC public opinion research report, 24% of respondents said their household had changed services in the preceding month to make services more affordable. Among that group—not all respondents—24% said they changed cable TV. The survey finding signals that cable changes are one affordability response; it does not quantify cord-cutting savings.
Do the CRTC’s plan-change protections apply to TV service?
Do not assume that rules for internet or cellphone plans cover every TV package or streaming subscription. CRTC policy 2026-43 says protections effective June 12, 2026 address certain fees tied to modifying or cancelling cellphone and internet plans, including fees whose main purpose is to discourage a plan change or cancellation. The policy reproduces subsection 27.04(1) of the Telecommunications Act: “A telecommunications service provider must not charge a fee to a subscriber that is related to the activation or modification of a telecommunications service plan”. Check the terms and rules that apply to your particular TV or online service separately.
What is the Canadian streaming-services regulatory context?
The CRTC says particular online streaming services operating in Canada may be subject to registration, basic-condition and base-contribution requirements supporting Canadian and Indigenous content. The requirements apply to particular services, not automatically to every service a household uses. They provide regulatory context, but do not by themselves show that a specific subscription price has risen because of those rules.
