To transfer files from a USB drive to a MacBook Pro, connect the drive, open it in Finder under Locations, then drag the files or folders you want to a folder on your Mac. Confirm the copies arrived before removing anything from the drive, then eject it in Finder before disconnecting.
Copy files from a USB drive to your MacBook Pro
- Connect the drive. Start with its supplied cable. If its plug does not fit a port on your MacBook Pro, check the connectors on both devices and use a compatible adapter. The right adapter depends on your specific MacBook Pro and drive; Apple’s guide to connecting storage devices notes that an adapter may be needed when connectors do not match.
- Find the drive in Finder. Open Finder and look for the connected device under Locations in the sidebar. If the sidebar is not visible, use Finder’s View menu to show it.
- Copy the files. Select the drive, locate the files or folders, and drag the items you want to a destination on the Mac, such as Documents or a folder you have created. Copying a whole folder can preserve its organization. Apple documents this drag-to-destination workflow in its Mac storage-device guide.
- Verify, then eject. Open the destination and check that the files are there before deleting or changing the originals on the USB drive. In Finder, choose File > Eject or click the eject control next to the drive in the sidebar; disconnect it after it disappears.
For a safe import, treat the USB drive as the original until you have verified the Mac copies. Do not assume every drag behaves identically across macOS versions or circumstances; the documented workflow is to drag selected files to a location on the Mac.

Does your MacBook Pro need a USB adapter?
Only if the drive’s connector does not fit an available port on your particular MacBook Pro. Models and ports vary, so identify the Mac’s ports and the drive’s plug before choosing an adapter. If the supplied cable already fits, you do not need an adapter for this transfer.
Why you may be unable to copy files to the Mac
The drive is not visible in Finder
Check that the cable is firmly connected and that any required adapter is compatible. Then look under Locations in Finder. If it still does not appear, open Disk Utility to see whether the device is recognized there. Avoid erasing or reformatting it just because Finder does not show it; those actions can delete data.

You can open files but cannot save to the drive
This is a write problem, not necessarily a transfer problem: copying files from a readable drive to the Mac may still work even if the Mac cannot write new files to that drive. Check available space and the drive’s format in Finder’s Get Info window. Apple says a Mac may read an NTFS-formatted drive but cannot write to it using Disk Utility; see Apple’s external-drive saving guidance.
Also check the drive’s Sharing & Permissions settings and whether it is dedicated to Time Machine. Apple notes that a Time Machine drive is reserved for backups rather than general file storage. If these checks do not explain the problem, use Disk Utility’s First Aid guidance to check for disk errors rather than immediately choosing Erase.

The drive appears full or has disk errors
Check its available space and, if copying still fails, consider whether the volume may need repair. Apple’s guidance on saving files to an external drive covers capacity, permissions, Time Machine use, and disk errors. Back up important contents before attempting repairs that could affect data.
Which format should you use for a drive shared with Windows?
You usually do not need to format a drive just to copy files that the Mac can already read. If you have a specific compatibility reason to reformat it for both Mac and Windows, Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or less and ExFAT for disks over 32 GB in its guide to formatting a disk for Windows computers. For Mac-only use, Apple identifies APFS as the default file system for macOS 10.13 or later; its Disk Utility file-format guide describes the available formats.

Formatting erases the files on the disk or volume. Before selecting Erase in Disk Utility, copy anything important somewhere else and confirm that backup is usable. Apple’s file-system guide and Windows-formatting guide describe format choices; neither makes reformatting necessary for a drive that already works for your transfer.
