The Galaxy A36 5G is the stronger choice on paper if you want a smoother 120Hz screen, a faster wired-charging rating, or more capable-sounding camera hardware. The Galaxy A17 5G shares its 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display size and 5,000mAh battery, and may be the better value if it costs less where you live. There is no reliable universal price gap: compare the same storage configuration, market and seller before deciding.

Where the A36 has the advantage
Smoother display refresh
PhoneArena lists a maximum 120Hz refresh rate for the A36, compared with 90Hz for the A17. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother. The A17’s Samsung UK listing confirms a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen at up to 90Hz, so the A36’s stated advantage is refresh rate rather than screen size.
Faster rated charging and a newer listed chipset
The comparison lists the A36 at up to 45W wired charging and the A17 at up to 25W. Those are rated capabilities, not measured charging times; actual results depend on conditions and compatible charging equipment. PhoneArena lists the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 in the A36 and Exynos 1330 in the A17. This specification comparison does not establish how either phone performs in independent testing or every regional variant.

More specified rear-camera hardware
The A36’s listed rear setup includes an 8MP ultrawide and 5MP macro camera, compared with the A17’s 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro on Samsung UK’s specification page. These numbers describe camera hardware, not resulting image quality. Megapixel counts alone cannot show which phone takes better photos; image processing, lighting and use case also matter.
What the A17 still offers
The A17 matches the A36’s reported 6.7-inch screen size and 5,000mAh battery capacity, while Samsung UK specifies an FHD+ Super AMOLED panel. Its front camera is listed at 13MP versus the A36’s 12MP in PhoneArena’s comparison; that difference alone does not prove a better selfie experience.

Samsung UK says the A17 receives six OS upgrades and six years of security support. This is Samsung’s support commitment, not an independent guarantee of update timing for every device: delivery can depend on model variant, country and carrier. Samsung’s update record for model SM-A176B lists an Android 16 security update released September 29, 2026, with the September 5, 2026 security patch level. Samsung’s update record applies specifically to that model code.

There is no defensible single current price difference without a country, memory and storage configuration, seller, warranty and date. PhoneArena’s comparison, updated in February 2026, reports an A36 starting price of $399 and an A17 price around €239; these are different currencies and markets, not prices to subtract or a live equivalent-configuration comparison.

For another dated example, Samsung Malaysia listed the A36 6GB/128GB model at a recommended retail price of RM1,499, with a time-limited promotional price of RM1,299 in its 2025 launch terms. That historical Malaysia offer does not establish the phone’s current price. Samsung Malaysia’s launch announcement gives the market-specific context.
Quick Recap
How to compare what you would actually pay
- Choose the same country and currency for both listings.
- Match RAM and storage capacity; a lower price for a different configuration is not an equal comparison.
- Compare the same kind of seller and warranty coverage, and account for delivery or other charges included at checkout.
- Check the listing date and whether a discount is temporary. Use current retailer listings rather than historical launch prices to decide which costs less today.
Which Galaxy should you buy?
- Choose the Galaxy A36 5G if its local price fits your budget and you value the higher stated refresh rate, 45W charging capability or the additional rear-camera specifications.
- Choose the Galaxy A17 5G if it is meaningfully cheaper for an equivalent configuration and you are comfortable with its 90Hz display and 25W charging rating. Its stated support commitment and matching screen size and battery capacity are also relevant.
- Compare current offers before choosing if value is your main concern. The available price figures are from different markets and dates, and do not establish a like-for-like current premium.
