For a straightforward small-business website, shared hosting is usually the sensible tier to price first. Set your budget using the renewal price for the billing term you expect to keep—not just the introductory offer—and add only the services the site needs. Move to managed WordPress, VPS, cloud, or dedicated hosting when your platform, workload, support requirements, or administration needs justify the higher cost.
There is no single industry-average figure established by the provider examples below. Hosting prices vary by provider, region, plan, billing commitment, and renewal terms.

What hosting budget should a small business start with?
Start by identifying what the site must do, then compare plans that meet those requirements. A basic business site can often begin on shared hosting: multiple customers use resources on the same server, and Namecheap identifies small-business websites as one use case for its shared plans. Namecheap’s shared-hosting page defines web hosting as a service that stores website files on a server and makes them accessible online.

Provider prices: first term and renewal are different
These examples were accessed October 7, 2026. Currency and geography matter: GoDaddy’s listed prices were shown in a European locale, while Bluehost’s examples are in US dollars. Check the provider’s current checkout terms for your location before committing.
| Provider and plan type | Published price example | What the figure means |

| GoDaddy Hosting for WordPress Basic | €2.79/month | First-term price for a one-year term shown in a European locale; the opened listing did not establish a renewal rate. The listing includes 10 GB NVMe storage, WordPress management, and SSL with no renewal fee. WordPress hosting page. |
| Bluehost shared and managed WordPress Starter renewal examples | $15.99/month on monthly renewal; $11.99/month equivalent on a 12-month term; $9.99/month equivalent on a 36-month term | US-dollar renewal examples in an article updated February 11, 2026. These figures are not directly interchangeable: some are renewals and others first-term offers, and their term lengths and included features differ. For a fair comparison, use the price you would actually pay at renewal for the same billing term and confirm which features remain included.
How to choose the right hosting tier
Shared hosting for a straightforward site
Consider shared hosting first if the site is relatively simple and the plan supports its software, expected workload, and required features. Check the number of sites and storage included, along with email, domain, SSL, backups, security, and support. A low advertised rate is useful only if the plan includes what the business needs or the cost of missing features still fits the budget.

For a WordPress site, compare the practical maintenance included—not only the words “WordPress hosting” on the plan. Check whether management, updates, security, backups, storage, and support are included, and whether those features continue at renewal. GoDaddy’s cited WordPress Basic listing, for example, specifies WordPress management, 10 GB NVMe storage, and SSL with no renewal fee; that is a provider-specific listing, not a feature guarantee for WordPress plans generally.

VPS, cloud, or dedicated hosting for a real requirement
VPS, cloud, and dedicated hosting are higher tiers. They may make sense when the site’s workload, software, traffic demands, or operational requirements call for resources or control that a shared plan does not provide. Bluehost’s published renewal examples include these tiers at higher prices than its shared and managed WordPress Starter examples, but a higher tier is not automatically better for a small business.
A self-managed VPS also carries administration and software costs. For example, cPanel lists its Solo control-panel license at $29.99 per month, or $27.46 per month with annual billing, excluding VAT; it is available on Cloud/VPS only. That is a license price, not the total hosting bill. cPanel license pricing.

Build the recurring budget beyond the headline hosting price
List the services the business needs and confirm whether each is included, billed separately, or renewed on a different schedule. The plan page and checkout terms should make the total cost clear before purchase.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Hosting renewal: Record the renewal amount and the billing term, not only the introductory rate.
- Domain: Check whether registration is included for a limited period and what renewal costs. Do not count a bundled first term as a permanent inclusion.
- Email: Verify whether business email accounts are included, how many, and whether they renew as a separate service.
- SSL: Confirm whether a certificate is included and whether the price remains unchanged at renewal.
- Backups and security: Check the backup schedule, retention, restore process, and any additional security charges.
- Management and licensing: Include paid WordPress management, control-panel licenses, or other required software if they are not part of the hosting plan.
- Administration and support: For VPS or other less-managed options, account for the work or help required to maintain the server.
A practical way to set your budget
- Write down the site’s requirements. Note its platform, number of sites, storage needs, expected workload, and which email, domain, SSL, backup, security, and support features are necessary.
- Filter out plans that do not meet them. Compare suitable shared plans first for a straightforward site; include managed WordPress or higher tiers only where their features or resources solve a specific need.
- Compare equivalent billing terms. Put first-term and renewal prices side by side, and distinguish monthly billing from a monthly equivalent on an annual or longer commitment.
- Calculate the recurring total. Add the renewal costs of required services that are not included, plus any necessary licensing or administration.
- Choose the least costly plan that meets the documented requirements. Review the choice if performance, reliability, support, or workload needs change.
