Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNot through the documented on-premises gateway custom-connector route if the server requires API-key authentication. Microsoft’s custom connector FAQ excludes API Key authentication for that route. Copilot Studio’s MCP onboarding wizard does support API keys, but it is a separate route for an MCP server reachable from Copilot Studio. Microsoft’s documentation does not describe a stateless exception to the gateway limitation.
Which connection route fits your MCP server?
Copilot Studio documents two ways to connect to an existing MCP server: the MCP onboarding wizard and a Power Apps custom MCP connector. Choose based on endpoint reachability, privacy, authentication, and whether the API fits the custom connector schema.

| Route | When it fits | Authentication and constraints |
|---|---|---|
| MCP onboarding wizard | The endpoint is reachable from Copilot Studio and you want to connect an existing MCP server directly. | Supports no authentication, API key, or OAuth 2.0. For an API key, choose a request header or query parameter and supply its name. Microsoft describes Streamable transport support. Microsoft’s existing-server connection guide. |
| Power Apps custom MCP connector | You need a custom connector, including a route to a private API through the on-premises data gateway. | The example uses OpenAPI 2.0 and Streamable MCP protocol metadata. The gateway route does not support API Key authentication; choose an authentication type supported for that route. Microsoft’s MCP connector example and custom connector FAQ. |
Microsoft’s FAQ states the authentication option as “API Key (except on-premises data gateway).” That is the key compatibility constraint: an API key accepted by the direct MCP wizard does not thereby become supported through the gateway custom-connector path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does stateless MCP make API-key authentication work through the gateway?
No documented exception establishes that. The reviewed Microsoft pages describe the gateway limitation for API-key authentication and do not say that a stateless server, or a particular MCP transport mode, bypasses it. Treat transport behavior and connector authentication as separate choices: a stateless implementation does not change the documented authentication support.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
If the API key must remain in use and the MCP endpoint cannot be reached from Copilot Studio, the reviewed documentation does not establish a directly supported route combining those constraints. Any intermediary or authentication bridge would need deployment-specific validation; do not assume it is a Microsoft-documented gateway configuration.
Connect directly with the MCP onboarding wizard
Use this route when Copilot Studio can reach the MCP server endpoint. Microsoft’s guide describes configuring the server URL and authentication in the wizard.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- In Copilot Studio, add an MCP tool using the MCP onboarding option.
- Enter the server name, description, and URL.
- Choose API key authentication.
- Choose whether the key is sent in a request header or as a query parameter, then enter the required parameter name and key details.
- Complete the connection and verify that the agent can access the intended tools.
Microsoft’s connection guide describes the header choice this way: “Header: Select this option if your MCP server requires the API key to be sent in the request header.” Use the placement your MCP service expects; a query parameter is not interchangeable with a header unless the server is configured to accept it.
Use a custom MCP connector with a gateway
For a private API that must use an on-premises data gateway, the documented custom-connector route is the relevant one—but it does not support API-key authentication through that gateway. Confirm that the API’s authentication method is compatible before building the connector.

Prepare the connector schema
Microsoft’s MCP custom-connector example uses an OpenAPI 2.0 YAML schema, an HTTPS host, a POST operation, and the extension x-ms-agentic-protocol: mcp-streamable-1.0. The custom connector FAQ says connectors currently support OpenAPI 2.0 rather than OpenAPI 3.0. The sample’s host and operation are illustrative; describe your actual service rather than copying fictional endpoint details.
Import and configure it
- Prepare an OpenAPI 2.0 YAML file that describes the MCP endpoint and its operation.
- In Power Apps, import the OpenAPI file to create the custom connector.
- Complete connector setup, including the gateway connection and an authentication method supported for that gateway route.
- Make the connector available to Copilot Studio and validate the connection and tools in your environment.
Microsoft’s MCP connection guide provides the schema example and directs makers to Power Apps for connector import and setup. The custom connector FAQ documents the authentication exception.

Check policies and agent requirements
MCP access in Copilot Studio relies on Power Platform connectors, so data policies that govern connectors also govern access to MCP servers and their tools. Microsoft also requires generative orchestration for MCP support. Review the tenant’s connector policies and agent configuration before treating a successful connector setup as available to the agent. See Microsoft’s MCP connection documentation and MCP tools and resources guidance.

What to verify in your environment
- Whether Copilot Studio can reach the MCP endpoint directly, or whether it is private to the network.
- Whether your required authentication method is supported by the selected route; API key is not supported for the on-premises gateway custom-connector route.
- Whether the service can be represented by the OpenAPI 2.0 custom connector schema if using that route.
- Whether gateway configuration, tenant data policies, endpoint behavior, and server-side authentication permit the intended connection.
- Whether generative orchestration is enabled and the agent has access only to appropriate MCP tools.
