Windows 11 Audio Switching to a Monitor: Find the Cause and Fix It

Windows 11 can send sound to a monitor when the monitor’s HDMI or DisplayPort audio output is selected as the playback device. To stop it, check Settings > System > Sound > Output and choose your speakers or headset. If only one app switches, check that app’s device in Volume mixer; it can differ from Windows’ system default.

Why does Windows 11 sound keep switching to the monitor?

A monitor connected through HDMI or DisplayPort may appear in Windows as an available audio output. If that monitor output is selected, Windows sends sound there. That may be expected if the monitor has speakers, but it can seem like sound is disappearing when you intended to use separate speakers or a headset. Microsoft advises checking that a monitor without built-in speakers is not selected as the default output device (Microsoft Support: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows).

There is no single confirmed trigger for every PC. First determine whether Windows has selected the monitor, whether only one app is using it, or whether your preferred output device has disappeared. Each case points to a different fix.

How do I stop Windows 11 from switching audio output to my monitor?

Choose the intended system output

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or headset you want to use.

Selecting an output in this section also sets it as the default playback device, according to Microsoft’s instructions (Microsoft Support).

Set a persistent default in Playback

If you want to set the preferred output from the classic sound controls, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings. On the Playback tab, select the device and choose Set as default.

Check mute and device status

Confirm that the selected speakers or headset are not muted and that the device is enabled. If it is disabled, inspect its properties and enable it if that option is available. Microsoft includes mute and device-status checks in its Windows audio troubleshooting guidance (Microsoft Support).

Why does sound switch to the monitor only in one app?

Windows lets apps use an output device different from the system default. If system sounds and other apps play through the right speakers but one app goes to the monitor, inspect that app’s routing rather than changing the system default.

What if the speakers or headset are missing from Output?

If the device you want does not appear in the Output list, troubleshoot detection rather than repeatedly selecting the monitor.

  1. Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Look for the audio device. If it is present but disabled, enable it.
  3. If it is absent or still does not work, get the current audio driver for your Windows version from your computer or sound-card manufacturer.

These are Microsoft’s recommended checks for a missing or undetected audio output device (Microsoft Support).

What else can I try if the output keeps changing?

After confirming the intended output, app routing, device status, and driver, try Windows’ built-in audio troubleshooter. Microsoft also lists turning off audio enhancements as a troubleshooting step. These checks may help with audio problems, but they are not guaranteed to resolve every instance of output switching (Microsoft Support).
