Final Error Logs: Let Node.js and Go Finish Writing

A final error can disappear if a process exits before output or cleanup completes. Learn the safer Node.js and Go termination patterns.

If the last error message disappears when a program ends, the process may be exiting before pending output or cleanup finishes. In Node.js, prefer setting process.exitCode and letting the event loop drain. In Go, return from main after cleanup; if you use a bufio.Writer, call and check Flush() first. These steps address process-level output—not guaranteed delivery to a remote collector or durable storage.

Why the final error can go missing

Printing an error and terminating are separate operations. Output may still be pending when the process is forced to stop, or a program-managed buffer may not yet have forwarded its bytes to the underlying writer. The right fix depends on the runtime and the writer involved.

Neither runtime’s standard documentation makes a process-level flush an end-to-end guarantee: bytes reaching an underlying writer does not prove that a remote logging service received or durably stored them.

Node.js: set the exit code and let the event loop drain

process.exit() forces Node.js to terminate even if asynchronous I/O remains pending. The Node.js v26.10.0 process documentation warns that additional writes to stdout may not complete before a forced exit.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

For a command-line error, set the status and allow normal termination after the work that produces output has completed:

console.error('Request failed');
process.exitCode = 1;
// Let the program finish its remaining work and exit naturally.

This does not mean every write is asynchronous or that the process should keep doing unrelated work. It avoids forcing termination while pending work may still matter.

Do not use the exit event for asynchronous cleanup

Node.js exit event listeners can run synchronous code only; asynchronous work scheduled from them will not delay termination. The beforeExit event is emitted when the event loop has emptied and can be used to schedule more work, but it is not emitted after an explicit process.exit() or an uncaught exception. Neither event is a universal substitute for arranging cleanup in the normal control flow.

Standard output behavior depends on destination and platform

Node.js stdout and stderr are not uniformly asynchronous. The documented behavior varies by operating system and destination:

These behaviors are described in the Node.js process documentation. Synchronous writes can block the event loop, especially when a destination is slow or backpressured. Do not assume that every console write is buffered, or that every write is asynchronous.

If you use a logging library

If an error-handling path must terminate forcibly, first await the logger’s documented flush or close operation, if it provides one. The general Node.js process documentation does not define the behavior of third-party loggers; check the library’s own guarantees.

Go: return normally, and explicitly flush application buffers

os.Exit terminates immediately and skips deferred functions. The official Go os package documentation states: “The program terminates immediately; deferred functions are not run.” As a result, a deferred flush or close in main cannot run if main calls os.Exit before returning.

A safer pattern is to let work return an error, perform required cleanup in main, then choose the status after cleanup:

func run(out *bufio.Writer) error {
    if _, err := out.WriteString("Request failedn"); err != nil {
        return err
    }
    return nil
}

func main() {
    out := bufio.NewWriter(os.Stderr)
    err := run(out)
    if flushErr := out.Flush(); flushErr != nil {
        // Handle the flush failure before choosing an exit status.
        fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, flushErr)
        os.Exit(1)
    }
    if err != nil {
        fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, err)
        os.Exit(1)
    }
}

This example explicitly flushes the application-managed writer before either exit call. In production code, decide how to report a flush failure without relying on the same failing buffered path. If the program needs other deferred cleanup, structure the work so that cleanup completes before any os.Exit call.

Flush the writer you actually use

For a bufio.Writer, call Flush() and inspect its error. The Go bufio documentation says that after data has been written, the client should call Writer.Flush to guarantee it has been forwarded to the underlying io.Writer. That is the boundary of this guarantee; it does not confirm downstream ingestion or durable storage.

Do not assume that Go’s standard log.Logger itself necessarily buffers output. Its documentation says each logging operation makes one call to its configured writer. Buffering may instead come from that writer or another logging implementation.

Treat Go fatal logging calls as exit paths

log.Fatal, log.Fatalf, and log.Fatalln write a log entry and then call os.Exit(1). They therefore bypass deferred cleanup just as a direct os.Exit does. If defers must run, return the error to code that can flush, close, and then set the process status.

Checklist for a missing final error

  • Identify the actual output path: stdout/stderr, a buffered writer, a logger, or a remote collector.
  • Find forced termination paths, including Node.js process.exit(), Go os.Exit, and Go fatal logging calls.
  • Move required cleanup into normal control flow before termination; do not rely on asynchronous work in Node.js exit handlers or Go defers that an os.Exit prevents.
  • Where your Go code uses bufio.Writer, call Flush() and handle its error before exiting.
  • For a logger or collector, consult its own flush, close, and acknowledgment documentation; runtime-level behavior alone does not establish delivery.
