First check whether the destination actually requires MP3: M4A commonly contains AAC audio, and keeping the original avoids another lossy encode when AAC is accepted. For an MP3 export, use the recipient’s specified settings; if none are given, Audacity suggests 128 kbps for speech and 256 kbps for music.
Choose a conversion method
| Method | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music or GarageBand | Mac users who want Apple’s documented workflow | Apple’s guide covers M4A-to-MP3 conversion on Mac. The exact controls can vary by app version, so follow the current instructions in Apple’s guide. |
| Audacity | Users who want configurable export settings or are working across supported desktop platforms | Import the M4A, then export as MP3. Depending on the platform and installation, FFmpeg support may be needed for M4A import or export. |
These workflows are for unprotected files you are authorized to use. Apple’s cited guide is scoped to Mac, while Audacity’s dependencies vary by platform and installation.

Convert with Audacity
- Import the M4A. Open the file in Audacity. If it will not import, check whether your Audacity installation needs FFmpeg support. Some unprotected M4A, MP4, or MOV imports on Mac may work without it. Files restricted to particular software may not be importable through FFmpeg; do not try to bypass protection.
- Open the export controls. Choose File → Export Audio, select MP3, then set the output folder and filename. Choose the channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate required by the destination.
- Select a bitrate if the destination gives no instructions. Audacity’s export guide recommends 128 kbps as a safe default for speech and 256 kbps for music. These are practical defaults, not universal standards or a guarantee that a higher bitrate will improve a low-quality source. See Audacity’s export guide.
- Export and check the result. Play the MP3, confirm its duration, and inspect its tags in the player or app where it will be used.
Convert on a Mac with Apple Music or GarageBand
Apple documents both Apple Music and GarageBand for converting M4A to MP3 on Mac. Follow Apple’s current instructions for the app you are using: menu names and controls can change between versions. The guide does not establish that protected subscription-stream files can be converted, so do not assume they are eligible.
Choose settings without making the file worse than necessary
Follow the destination’s requirements first
A player, upload form, or recipient may specify a format, bitrate, or other constraint. Use those instructions when available. If M4A/AAC is accepted, keeping the file in its existing format may avoid needless conversion; MP3 is a compatibility choice, not an automatic quality upgrade.

Understand the quality trade-off
M4A is an extension and container convention commonly associated with AAC, not a promise of one codec or quality setting. Audacity describes M4A (AAC) as lossy and notes that AAC can achieve slightly better quality than MP3 at the same file size. Re-encoding audio that is already lossy cannot restore information discarded in the original encoding. For format details, see Audacity’s supported-formats documentation.
Do not simply rename .m4a to .mp3: changing the extension does not convert the audio. A real conversion decodes and re-encodes the audio, unless a compatible workflow can remux the existing codec without re-encoding.

- - Extract audio from supported local MP4 videos as MP3 or M4A.
- - Save full audio or a selected range; preview the audio before extracting.
- - Choose MP3 at 128, 192, or 256 kbps and batch-process up to 10 videos.
- - Review, play, save and share verified output; original videos stay unchanged.
- - Offline processing with no ads, subscription, account or developer server.
Do not confuse AAC settings with MP3 settings
Audacity’s AAC export options document a 44,100 Hz default sample rate and 256 kbps default quality for that AAC export dialog; those are not MP3 recommendations. The same documentation lists a maximum stereo AAC setting of 320 kbps. See Audacity’s AAC export options.

Check tags and artwork after conversion
Metadata such as title, artist, album, and track number is separate from the audio encoding. Audacity provides a metadata editor for adding, deleting, or changing embedded information, but its documentation does not guarantee that every converter preserves every tag or cover image. Inspect the resulting MP3 in the intended player and correct missing information if needed. Audacity’s file FAQ explains import and save considerations.
