Convert DOCX to Markdown Locally: A Practical Guide to Clean Output

Run Pandoc locally to convert a DOCX file to Markdown, then inspect structure and features such as tables, images, and math before using the result.

To convert a Word document to Markdown without uploading it, install Pandoc and run pandoc input.docx -t markdown -o output.md on your computer. The command reads the DOCX locally and writes a separate Markdown file. Check the result against the original: Markdown preserves useful document structure, not Word’s full page layout or every feature.

Convert DOCX to Markdown with Pandoc

Pandoc is the most direct option here if you are comfortable using a terminal. Its demos include a DOCX-to-Markdown conversion, including math, and its getting-started guide explains command-line use and how file extensions can identify formats. The explicit -t markdown option names the output format. See the Pandoc demos and Pandoc getting-started guide.

  1. Install Pandoc using the instructions for your operating system on the official installation page.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the Word file, or use full paths to the files.
  3. Run pandoc input.docx -t markdown -o output.md, replacing input.docx with the source filename and output.md with the destination filename.
  4. Open output.md in your intended editor or publishing system and inspect it before relying on the conversion.

Using a different output name keeps the original DOCX intact. The command shown is a local command-line workflow; it does not include an upload service. Pandoc supports multiple Markdown flavors, so if you need a particular flavor or extension, check the User’s Guide for the version you installed rather than assuming every target behaves identically.

Choose an approach based on your workflow

Approach What it does Best fit Important trade-off
Pandoc command line Converts DOCX directly to Markdown. Readers who want a direct local conversion and are comfortable with a terminal. Inspect the output for document-specific features; no cited source guarantees perfect fidelity for every Word feature.
Mammoth plus an HTML-to-Markdown converter Converts DOCX to semantic HTML, then uses a separate converter to create Markdown. Readers who need to customize how named Word styles map to structure or want to work with HTML as an intermediate. Mammoth’s direct Markdown support is deprecated; its maintainers recommend HTML followed by a separate HTML-to-Markdown library.
Browser-based local converter MD Convert describes a browser workflow using Mammoth.js for semantic HTML and Turndown for CommonMark/GFM output. Readers who prefer a browser interface and have verified that the workflow suits their privacy needs. The page’s local-processing and no-upload statements are the service’s claims, not an independent security audit.

Use Mammoth when an HTML intermediate helps

Mammoth converts DOCX to HTML. Its documentation describes mapping common Word styles, such as Heading 1, to HTML heading elements, and allows style maps to customize those mappings. It can write HTML to standard output or a file and can put images in an output directory. For Markdown, its maintainers mark the direct feature as deprecated and recommend converting to HTML first, then using a separate HTML-to-Markdown library. Review the style mapping and image handling in that pipeline. See the Mammoth project documentation.

Assess browser-based conversion carefully

MD Convert says its browser workflow processes files locally and does not upload them. The page describes converting Word styles into semantic HTML with Mammoth.js, then generating CommonMark/GFM with Turndown in a Web Worker. It lists headings, lists, emphasis, links, blockquotes, and GFM pipe tables among the structures it handles, and says Word-specific XML details are discarded. These are the service’s descriptions, not independently verified security or compatibility findings. For sensitive documents, do not treat a generic “local” label as proof: review the tool’s explanation and decide whether its stated workflow is appropriate. See MD Convert’s product page.

Review the Markdown for structure and lost details

Markdown represents text and supported structure; it does not reproduce Word’s complete page layout. Some document features may need manual adjustment, particularly when a file relies on complex formatting or Word-specific details. Check the converted file in the system where you plan to use it, because rendering and supported Markdown features can differ.

  • Headings: Confirm the hierarchy is logical and that section titles became headings rather than ordinary paragraphs. Named Word styles matter: a converter that maps styles may not infer a heading just because text looks large or bold.
  • Lists: Check nested levels, numbering, and whether list items remain grouped correctly.
  • Tables: Inspect column alignment, cell contents, and any table formatting that matters to readers.
  • Images: Verify that images appear and that any generated image references point to files that are present. If using Mammoth, review its image output directory and the resulting references.
  • Links and emphasis: Check that link destinations, bold text, and italics survived as intended.
  • Math, footnotes, comments, and tracked changes: Compare important sections with the source instead of assuming they will be represented as needed.
  • Custom styles and visual layout: Confirm that custom Word styles map to the structure you expect. Page-specific layout and other highly visual elements may require manual reconstruction.

For a document with tables, images, footnotes, equations, comments, tracked changes, or custom styles, convert a representative copy first. That reveals whether your actual file needs extra cleanup before you process a larger set.

Where python-docx fits

The python-docx documentation describes programmatic access to DOCX documents and notes limitations in the document features it supports. It is useful when building a Python workflow around DOCX content, but the cited documentation does not establish it as a turnkey Markdown exporter. For a direct conversion, use a tool with a documented DOCX-to-Markdown path or build and test the required transformation yourself.
