“Today” can change by the minute, so check OpenAI Status before assuming the problem is on your device. If ChatGPT Image Generation is listed as affected, wait for recovery rather than repeatedly retrying. If it is not, work through the checks below to distinguish a temporary service issue from an account, browser, network, or upload problem.
First, check whether image generation is affected
OpenAI Status reports availability at an aggregate level across tiers, models, and error types, and says an individual customer’s availability may vary by subscription tier, model, and features. A green or unlisted status therefore cannot rule out every account-specific problem, but an active image-generation incident is a strong reason to pause local troubleshooting.

OpenAI has recorded image-generation incidents before: an incident titled “Elevated errors with image generation in ChatGPT” was marked resolved on July 7, 2026, and another titled “Elevated errors with image generation” was marked resolved on August 5, 2026. Those historical incidents show that service-side failures happen; they do not establish that there is an outage now. Check the live status page for the current state.

OpenAI’s current Images help article says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers on web, iOS, and Android. You can describe an image in a conversation or select More, then Images. Image creation can take a few minutes depending on prompt complexity, and you can continue using ChatGPT while it works.

If you are following older instructions for the official DALL·E GPT, switch to ChatGPT Images: OpenAI says that GPT has been retired. See OpenAI’s DALL·E in ChatGPT article for the retirement information.
Check your account and any usage-limit message
Images being available on all tiers does not mean every account has unlimited use or that every limit is identical. If ChatGPT displays a limit notice, follow the message and check that you are signed into the account you intended to use. The cited OpenAI guidance does not establish a stable image-generation quota for each plan, so buying or changing a subscription is not a universal fix. Consider a plan change only if the limit message and your needs make it relevant.

Refresh ChatGPT or retry in a new conversation
For a generic “Something went wrong” error, OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance suggests refreshing the page or starting a new chat. Try one, then submit the image request again. This is a low-cost way to rule out a stuck conversation or transient error, not a guaranteed image-generation repair.
Test the browser and its extensions
If the problem continues, check whether the browser environment is interfering. OpenAI notes that browser extensions—especially privacy or security tools and script or content blockers—can affect ChatGPT.

- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and try the request again.
- If it works there, disable extensions temporarily in your usual browser and retry, particularly content blockers or privacy and security extensions.
- If the issue persists, clear the browser cache and cookies, then sign in again.
- Try a different supported browser to see whether the problem follows your account or stays with one browser.
These are general ChatGPT troubleshooting steps, not a dedicated image-generation diagnostic test. OpenAI’s guidance is available in its troubleshooting article for ChatGPT error messages.
Rule out a network filter or connection problem
VPNs, proxies, secure DNS, and network filters can interfere with requests or responses. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic check, not a recommendation to leave security protections off.

- Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy, or pause a network filter if you control it, then retry.
- Test on another network, such as switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, if available.
- If possible, try another device on the same network. This helps distinguish a device or browser issue from a network-wide one.
If turning a protection tool off makes no difference, restore your usual settings. OpenAI’s general error guidance covers these network checks but does not establish that any one of them is the cause of a particular image-generation failure.

An attached-image upload problem is different from ChatGPT failing to create a generated image. For image inputs, OpenAI lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF as supported formats, with a limit of 20 MB per image. That is an input-upload constraint, not a limit on the size of generated-image output.

- Confirm the file is PNG, JPEG, or a non-animated GIF and is no larger than 20 MB.
- If you are attaching several images, try fewer or smaller files.
- If ChatGPT reports an upload limit, check that you are using the intended account and plan, review any rate or storage limit indicated, and check OpenAI Status.

If status is clear and the browser, network, and account checks do not help, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. Include details that can help identify the failure:
