CONTROL Resonant is a released sequel that shifts the lead role from Jesse Faden to her brother Dylan, moves the crisis into a warped Manhattan, and puts more emphasis on melee combat and supernatural traversal. Remedy describes the game as an action-adventure RPG built around large, distinct zones—not as an unqualified open world.

What is CONTROL Resonant?

CONTROL Resonant is Remedy Entertainment’s sequel to CONTROL. Remedy describes it as an action-adventure RPG, with Dylan Faden—Jesse’s brother—at its center. Jesse is missing as a new resonance crisis takes hold, and Dylan faces a reality-bending threat that puts his humanity and survival at risk. The Hiss and the Mold are part of the supernatural emergency now warping Manhattan.

That premise makes the sequel a continuation of the series, but its new protagonist and setting give it a distinct starting point. Remedy creative director Mikael Kasurinen told GamesRadar that players do not need to know the first game to begin the sequel; treat CONTROL as an optional primer rather than a required purchase. GamesRadar’s guide reports the comment, while Remedy’s current game page confirms the sequel relationship.

When did it come out, and where can you play?

Remedy announced a worldwide release date of September 24, 2026. Its current game page lists the game as available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and GeForce NOW. The same page describes Mac availability through Steam and the App Store as coming later in 2026; check the live storefront before buying, since that timing can change. See Remedy’s platform and status listing and its launch announcement.

For Xbox, Xbox Wire reported that Xbox Play Anywhere support was planned for launch. It is intended to let players move between an Xbox console, PC and supported gaming handhelds with shared saves, add-ons and achievements. That report does not establish Steam Deck verification or identical performance across devices. In an interview published May 8, 2026, Remedy Senior Communications Manager Miika Huttunen said, “We want players to feel at home with Control Resonant wherever they choose to play. Our focus has been on making sure the experience feels great across platforms.” Read the Xbox Wire interview for the platform details.

Choosing a platform or edition

  • PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: Choose a console edition if that is where you prefer to play. Remedy’s launch announcement says physical and digital editions were offered for preorder; check the retailer’s current listing for the exact platform, edition contents and availability.
  • PC: Remedy lists Steam and Epic Games Store. Choose the storefront where you prefer to manage your games; the cited information does not establish that performance or features are identical between PC and console.
  • GeForce NOW: Remedy lists the game as supported on the service. Check the service and game’s current requirements for account, subscription and device details.
  • Mac: Remedy’s page reviewed for this article still described Steam and App Store releases as forthcoming later in 2026, rather than available. Confirm the current listing before planning a purchase.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere: This may suit players who want to switch between supported Xbox devices, with the shared progression and content described by Xbox Wire. Verify current eligibility for the specific edition.

What changed in the gameplay?

The clearest change is the move toward a melee-oriented combat identity. GamesRadar describes Dylan’s shape-shifting weapon, the Aberrant, as a contrast to Jesse’s Service Weapon. Its guide also names abilities called Reach and Shift. These are editorially reported details rather than specifications stated on Remedy’s cited gameplay page, so they are best read as an indication of the sequel’s direction, not a complete abilities list.

Remedy’s official gameplay announcement presents exploration as a set of large, distinct, expansive Manhattan zones, with side activities, hidden encounters and optional discoveries. The studio also highlights Gravity Anomalies: places where gravity and orientation shift, forcing Dylan to navigate spaces that no longer obey ordinary physical rules. This points to broad areas with optional exploration and unusual traversal, but does not by itself establish a seamless open-world map. See Remedy’s gameplay announcement.

Why does the sequel feel bigger?

The scale comes through in the combination of a city-wide supernatural crisis, expansive zones, optional discoveries and traversal that can alter a player’s sense of direction. The new lead and melee emphasis also give the sequel a different combat frame from Jesse’s story. “Took the brakes completely off” works as an enthusiastic description of that ambition, not as an objective claim from Remedy: the available details explain the design direction, but do not prove that every aspect is larger or better than the first game.

Should you play CONTROL first?

No, not as a prerequisite. Remedy’s sequel page establishes the connection to the first game, while Kasurinen’s comment reported by GamesRadar says newcomers can jump in. Playing CONTROL first is an option if you want more context for Jesse, Dylan and the setting, but the sequel is presented as accessible to new players.
