The Mystery Caller in Control Resonant is Fred, also called Fra. He is inside the upper-level Cafeteria at the Field Office in Central. From the courtyard, enter the orange container marked GENERAL STORAGE, pass through it, then climb the exterior metal staircase to the entrance marked CAFETERIA. Speak with Fred to advance A New Directive.
Where to find the Mystery Caller
Go to the Field Office in Central and cross its outdoor courtyard toward the orange modular building. The Cafeteria is on the upper level; the clearest route starts at the container marked GENERAL STORAGE, above unit 01. The location and route are described in NerdsChalk’s Mystery Caller guide; PowerPyx’s A New Directive walkthrough also places the Cafeteria in the eastern part of the Field Office area.

Follow the General Storage route
- Check the quest clue. Open the Quest Log and review A New Directive. The objective is shown as “Locate the Mystery Caller / In Quest Area,” and the broadcast clue points to the Cafeteria.
- Find General Storage. In the courtyard, look for the orange modular building with the GENERAL STORAGE sign over the double doors of container unit 01.
- Pass through the container. Open the doors and walk through General Storage. The room’s 90 Source and one Aberrant Splinter are optional pickups; collecting them is not necessary to reach the caller.
- Take the outside stairs. Leave General Storage and climb the exterior metal staircase to the upper container entrance marked CAFETERIA.
- Talk to Fred. Inside, look behind the counter for a person in a blue hazmat suit or blue jumpsuit. The subtitle identifies him as FRED. Interact with him and finish the conversation.
What happens after the conversation
Speaking with Fred advances A New Directive to Question FBC Agents at the Field Office about Fred. This guide’s destination ends at that new objective. The larger quest continues with agent conversations, a reference from the real Director’s Office, preparing a containment unit and portrait, then contacting Fra through Zoe’s radio and sealing him in the unit. PowerPyx lists the Untapped Whetstone artifact as the quest reward.
If you cannot spot the Cafeteria
- Use the in-game signs rather than relying only on the map: the route runs from GENERAL STORAGE to the upper entrance marked CAFETERIA.
- Make sure you have left the storage container before looking for the stairs; the staircase is outside.
- If the map still feels unclear, orient toward the eastern part of the Field Office area and use the Cafeteria signage to confirm the entrance.
- Confirm that A New Directive is active and check its Quest Log clue. The walkthroughs describe the caller search after calls during progress in the Unknown Zone; PowerPyx lists progress in Sever the Hedron Links and Pope’s Research as requirements for the quest.
These route details come from recently updated walkthroughs rather than official game documentation. Quest wording or navigation may differ in a later game build or localization, so follow the signs and active Quest Log if they do.
