The difference was most noticeable when I had several pages open: titles were easier to scan in a side list, and moving between tabs felt less like searching through a row of shrinking labels. That is a personal preference, not proof that vertical tabs make everyone more productive.
What changed when I moved tabs to the side
Chrome’s vertical tabs move the tab list from the top of the browser window to its side. Google announced the built-in option on April 7, 2026, describing it as a way to read full page titles and manage tab groups. Those are Google’s stated benefits, not independent usability findings. In my week with the layout, the practical difference was how I recognized a page. On the top strip, titles compete for horizontal room as more tabs accumulate. In the side list, the titles were easier to read at a glance, so I could identify a page before clicking through several candidates. That mattered most when I was switching among pages whose titles looked similar.
The layout also made tab groups feel more like an organized list than a row of colored markers. Google’s Chrome Help page says you can hover over a group to preview it. I found that the side placement made the group structure easier to inspect while returning to a page. The benefit depends on whether you use groups and how you arrange your tabs.

Where the vertical layout helped—and where it didn’t
Finding a tab by its title
When page titles carry useful identifying information, showing more of each title can make scanning easier. The gain is less meaningful if you keep only a few tabs open or identify pages mainly by their icons.
Making room in the direction that matters
A vertical list uses space along the side of the window; a horizontal strip uses space along its top. In my work, the side list felt like a reasonable trade for more readable titles. If your pages need as much horizontal room as possible, the sidebar may feel intrusive instead. You can resize its width rather than treating it as fixed. (Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome)

Handling groups and many open pages
The side layout suited the way I returned to grouped pages and scanned a longer list. It is not a universal upgrade: someone who relies on the familiar top strip, keeps few tabs open, or values a wide page area may prefer horizontal tabs. Google’s description mentions double-digit tab counts as a use case, but that wording is not a tested threshold or a measured productivity result.

After switching, you can scroll through the side list and drag its edge to adjust its width. Chrome Help also documents hovering over a tab group to preview it. Menu labels and availability may vary by region or Chrome version.
How do I switch Chrome tabs back to the top?
Use the tab-strip context menu or the Appearance setting and choose Show tabs horizontally or Horizontal, respectively. On Mac, use the corresponding option in the View menu. Because the setting is reversible, you can try both layouts and switch back without committing to the sidebar.

Are vertical tabs better than horizontal tabs?
After a week, I preferred vertical tabs because I could scan page titles and return to grouped pages more easily. That preference is tied to how I used Chrome; the available sources do not establish a universal productivity advantage or show that one layout works better for all users. Try the side list if title visibility and scanning matter to you. Keep the top strip if it fits your habits or you would rather preserve horizontal room.
