Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Cs⁺ can stabilize oxygenated intermediates, alter local proton availability and electric fields, and change the barrier for CO₂ activation and carbon–carbon coupling. In many CO₂-fed copper systems, relatively large cations such as K⁺ and Cs⁺ favor C₂ and heavier products, including ethylene, ethanol, acetic acid, glycolic acid and propanol. That is a trend, not a universal ranking: feed molecule, anion, pH, cation concentration, catalyst surface and reactor design can reverse the outcome.
What alkali cations do at a CO₂-reduction cathode
CO₂ electroreduction (CO₂R) occurs at a cathode where electrons arrive at a catalyst surface and dissolved or gaseous CO₂ is converted into products. The decisive chemistry takes place within a very thin interfacial region, not in the bulk electrolyte alone. Its electric field, water structure, pH, reactant supply and surface coverage determine which short-lived intermediates survive long enough to react again.

They concentrate in the interfacial electric field
The cathode is negatively polarized during reduction, so positively charged alkali ions gather near it. Their local concentration can be very different from the concentration measured in the reservoir. This ion-rich layer changes the electrostatic potential experienced by adsorbed species such as *CO₂, *CO, *OCCO and oxygen-containing intermediates. A cation can therefore lower or raise the effective barrier for CO₂ activation and for the carbon–carbon coupling step that creates C₂ products.

Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Cs⁺ carry different hydration shells. Small Li⁺ binds water strongly and tends to remain heavily hydrated; larger ions generally have looser hydration structures and can approach the catalyst interface differently. Those size and hydration differences alter the distance between the cation and an adsorbate, the orientation of interfacial water and the strength with which oxygen atoms are stabilized. The result is a change in reaction pathway rather than a simple “more positive charge gives more product” rule.

They alter proton supply and local pH
Reduction consumes protons or water depending on the electrolyte and operating pH. Cations reorganize water and counterbalance charge, which can change the availability of proton donors at the surface. A local environment that supplies too many protons promotes hydrogen evolution; one that suppresses proton access can leave carbon intermediates available for coupling or further reduction. This is why the same cation can behave differently in acidic, neutral or alkaline cells.
Which cation gives the most ethylene?
There is no cation that produces the most ethylene under every CO₂-electrolysis condition. A 2023 review of alkali-cation effects reports a broad tendency for larger cations, especially Cs⁺, to favor C₂+ products, a group that includes ethylene and oxygenates such as ethanol, acetic acid, glycolic acid and propanol. In practical CO₂ systems, K⁺ and Cs⁺ are therefore common candidates when the target is multicarbon chemistry.
That trend must be qualified by the complete operating recipe. Cation concentration, the counter-anion, buffer capacity, pH, copper facet and morphology, current density, gas delivery and membrane architecture all influence selectivity. A comparison that changes several of these variables at once cannot establish that cation size caused the difference.

| Cation | General interfacial implication | What the CO₂ literature trend suggests | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Li⁺ | Strong hydration and a compact, water-rich solvation environment | Not a universal leader for C₂ products in CO₂R | Behavior depends strongly on anion, pH and catalyst; a separate CO-reduction study found hydrated Li⁺ favored ethylene |
| Na⁺ | Intermediate hydration and electric-double-layer effects | Can support multicarbon products under suitable conditions | No single product ranking is valid without concentration and reactor details |
| K⁺ | Less tightly hydrated than Li⁺; can accumulate near active sites | Frequently associated with stronger CO₂ activation and C₂+ formation; acid operation benefited from potassium near the catalyst | The advantage is conditional and can be offset by carbonate formation or hydrogen evolution |
| Cs⁺ | Large, weakly hydrated ion with a pronounced interfacial influence | Often reported as favorable for C₂+ products, including ethylene, in CO₂R reviews | High cost, concentration, anion and cell design still determine the measured selectivity |
What counts as a useful feedstock chemical?
Ethylene is the clearest example because it is a major building block for polymers and other commodity chemicals. CO₂ electrolysis can also produce ethanol, 1-propanol, acetic acid and glycolic acid. These products differ in volatility, separation difficulty and downstream value, so a high Faradaic efficiency for one molecule is not automatically the best process outcome.
Copper remains the dominant catalyst platform in the high-rate examples cited here. Its surface can bind CO strongly enough to retain carbon intermediates while still allowing further reduction and carbon–carbon coupling. The exposed crystal planes, defect density, oxidation history and local composition determine which intermediates occupy the surface. Cation effects act on that catalyst landscape; they do not replace it.

| Science, 2021; CO₂ feed in strongly acidic operation (pH below 1) | Potassium concentrated near copper active sites | High-rate CO₂ electrolyzer | 77% single-pass CO₂ utilization; 50% conversion efficiency toward ethylene, ethanol and 1-propanol at 1.2 A cm⁻² and a 4.2 V full-cell voltage |
| Nature Energy, 2023; CO₂ feed | No added alkali cation; pure-water-fed membrane-electrode-assembly stack | Cation-free architecture designed to avoid carbonate and salt precipitation | More than 1,000 hours of operation, 10 A total current and 50% Faradaic efficiency toward ethylene, with no reported CO₂ or electrolyte losses in the quoted result |
| Nature Chemistry, 2025; CO feed rather than CO₂ | Hydrated Li⁺ suppressed hydrogenation at carbon sites | Antimony-doped copper in a membrane-electrode-assembly electrolyzer | 79% ethylene Faradaic efficiency at 150 mA cm⁻² and 39% energy efficiency |
| ChemSusChem, 2018; CO₂ reduction on Cu(100) | Anion changed while comparing perchlorate and iodide salts | Cu(100) surface at −1.23 V versus RHE | Changing ClO₄⁻ to I⁻ raised ethylene Faradaic efficiency from 31% to 50% and ethanol from 7% to 16%; total C₂/C₃ Faradaic efficiency reached 74% with KI |
The Science result is notable because acidic CO₂R normally faces intense competition from hydrogen evolution. Rather than relying on a highly alkaline catholyte, the design increased potassium availability at the active interface. The reported conversion efficiency is specifically toward the listed multicarbon products; it is not the same metric as Faradaic efficiency.
The Nature Energy stack demonstrates a different solution: remove mobile alkali cations altogether and feed pure water through a membrane-electrode-assembly architecture. That arrangement limited carbonate formation and salt precipitation while sustaining ethylene production for more than 1,000 hours. It shows that cations can be useful tuning agents but are not mandatory ingredients for durable operation.
Why CO reduction and CO₂ reduction can give opposite answers
CO is an intermediate and a feed molecule, but a CO-fed electrolyzer does not reproduce a CO₂-fed one. CO₂ must first be activated and reduced to adsorbed CO; a CO feed begins further downstream. The interfacial coverage, water demand and rate-limiting step therefore change.

In the 2025 Nature Chemistry study, a small hydrated Li⁺ favored hydrocarbon ethylene by suppressing hydrogenation at carbon sites. That observation cannot be used to claim that Li⁺ is the best cation for CO₂ electrolysis. Reviews of CO₂R more often associate larger K⁺ or Cs⁺ ions with C₂+ hydrocarbons and oxygenates. When comparing papers, first identify whether the feed was CO₂ or CO, then compare cation, catalyst and reactor under that same feed.
Anions, buffers and catalyst structure matter as much as cation size
Anion effects
The counter-anion is not an inert label. It can adsorb on copper, alter surface charge and change the interfacial water network. On Cu(100) at −1.23 V versus RHE, replacing ClO₄⁻ with I⁻ increased ethylene selectivity from 31% to 50% and ethanol from 7% to 16%; the combined C₂/C₃ Faradaic efficiency reached 74% with KI. That comparison changed the anion, so it should not be presented as a cation-size experiment alone.
Buffers and pH
Buffer capacity controls how quickly the cathode environment becomes alkaline or acidic relative to the bulk solution. pH changes CO₂ availability, proton transfer and hydrogen evolution. In alkaline operation, electrogenerated OH⁻ reacts with CO₂ to form carbonate and bicarbonate, consuming feed carbon before it reaches the catalyst. Acidic operation reduces that carbonate penalty but increases the risk that electrons produce H₂ instead of carbon products.

Copper surface and mass transport
Gas-diffusion layers, catalyst loading, roughness and exposed facets determine whether CO₂ arrives fast enough and whether products leave before secondary reactions. At high current density, concentration gradients and water management can dominate a modest cation effect. A cation that improves selectivity in a rotating-disk experiment may not do so in a membrane-electrode assembly with gas-phase CO₂ and a different local pH.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Carbon efficiency, energy efficiency and Faradaic efficiency are different
- Faradaic efficiency (FE) is the fraction of measured charge assigned to a product. A 50% FE for ethylene means half of the product-forming electrons, under the stated accounting method, made ethylene.
- Energy efficiency includes the cell voltage and therefore penalizes large electrical losses. The CO-fed antimony-doped copper system reported 39% energy efficiency at 150 mA cm⁻².
- Single-pass CO₂ utilization measures how much CO₂ entering the cell is consumed rather than exiting unreacted. The 2021 Science system reported 77% under its acidic, high-rate conditions.
- Conversion efficiency toward multicarbon products combines carbon conversion and product destination. The same Science result reported 50% toward ethylene, ethanol and 1-propanol at 1.2 A cm⁻² and 4.2 V.
These metrics answer different process questions. A cell can show high FE at low current, high current with poor carbon utilization, or strong carbon utilization at a voltage that is expensive to operate. Any fair comparison keeps all of the metrics and their test conditions visible.
How to choose a cation strategy for a CO₂ electrolyzer
- Define the feed and target. Decide whether the inlet is CO₂ or CO and whether the priority is ethylene, an oxygenate, total C₂+ carbon or minimum carbonate loss.
- Set the pH and carbonate policy. Acidic cells limit carbonate but need a plan for hydrogen evolution. Alkaline cells can suppress hydrogen but require carbon accounting for carbonate and bicarbonate.
- Screen cation identity and concentration. Compare Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Cs⁺ at matched current density, catalyst loading, gas flow, temperature and anion. Report both bulk concentration and, where possible, evidence of interfacial enrichment.
- Control the anion and buffer. Keep the counter-anion fixed when testing cations. If the anion changes, treat it as a separate variable because iodide and perchlorate produced substantially different C₂ selectivities on Cu(100).
- Match the catalyst surface to the claim. Record copper facet or morphology, pretreatment, oxidation state and any dopant. Results on antimony-doped copper or a specific Cu(100) surface should not be generalized to every copper electrode.
- Use a reactor that reflects the intended scale. Membrane-electrode assemblies provide high current density and practical gas handling, but they introduce water-management, membrane and salt-precipitation constraints absent from many laboratory cells.
- Measure the full carbon balance. Quantify gas and liquid products, unreacted CO₂, carbonate and crossover. Report FE together with single-pass utilization, cell voltage and energy efficiency.
- Run long enough to expose drift. Track catalyst restructuring, cation depletion, membrane fouling and changes in local pH. The cation-free Nature Energy stack’s more-than-1,000-hour result illustrates the durability benchmark that short tests cannot establish.
Common failure modes and how to diagnose them
- Ethylene falls while hydrogen rises: inspect local proton availability, cathode wetting and catalyst potential. The cation may be increasing water access or the cell may have shifted toward hydrogen evolution.
- Carbon utilization is low in alkaline operation: measure carbonate and bicarbonate in both catholyte and anolyte. OH⁻ capture of CO₂ can hide behind an apparently acceptable product FE.
- Selectivity changes after replacing the salt: check the anion before attributing the result to cation size. Iodide can interact with copper differently from perchlorate.
- Performance is not reproduced at higher current: examine gas-diffusion flooding, dry-out, CO₂ transport and local heating. Interfacial cation effects cannot compensate for mass-transfer failure.
- A CO-fed result is being used to predict CO₂R: repeat the comparison with the same feed molecule. CO bypasses the initial CO₂-activation step and can reverse which hydration environment is favorable.
- Salt crystals appear in the cell: reduce local supersaturation, improve water management and reconsider mobile-electrolyte loading. A pure-water, cation-free membrane design is one route to suppressing precipitation.
What the evidence supports
Alkali cations are powerful interfacial regulators, not universal ethylene switches. In CO₂-fed copper systems, K⁺ and Cs⁺ often promote the oxygenated, multicarbon chemistry needed for ethylene and related feedstocks, while potassium enrichment has enabled high-rate acidic operation. Yet a durable cation-free stack and a CO-fed Li⁺ study show that the best choice depends on the reaction stage and engineering objective. The reliable design rule is to specify feed, cation, anion, pH, catalyst, current density, voltage, carbon utilization and stability together; naming the cation alone is not enough.
