You can install Ubuntu and OBS on a Contabo VPS, but installation alone does not make it a working headless streaming server. OBS for Linux requires a compatible OpenGL 3.3 graphics capability and an X window system or Wayland; the available information does not establish that any particular Contabo plan supplies them or can sustain your chosen encode. Confirm those requirements with Contabo for the exact plan, then test the stream before relying on it.
What to verify before ordering a VPS
Treat the graphics/display requirement as a go/no-go check, not a detail to solve after setup. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. “Headless” means you do not operate the server through a local monitor; it does not remove OBS’s need for a functioning graphics and display environment.

- Ask Contabo whether the specific VPS plan exposes the graphics capability OBS needs and supports a usable X or Wayland environment.
- Ask whether the plan can sustain encoding at your intended resolution and frame rate, and what outbound network capacity is available. These are separate questions from whether OBS installs.
- Plan a test with the actual video, audio, OBS scene, encoder and YouTube destination you intend to use. OBS cautions that meeting its minimum system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully.
The available documentation does not verify a particular Contabo plan, virtual GPU, Xvfb setup, OBS launch command or systemd automation for this deployment. Do not assume a generic VPS plan is suitable on the basis of its CPU or memory specification alone.

Contabo’s first-install instructions, published June 16, 2025 and updated June 26, 2025, put VPS and VDS installation in the Customer Control Panel. The basic flow is to choose the instance, select a standard operating-system image and configure Linux access.

- Open the Contabo Customer Control Panel and select the VPS or VDS instance you want to install.
- Choose a standard Ubuntu image from the available operating-system options. The exact image choices can depend on what Contabo currently offers for the instance.
- Set a Linux password or save an SSH public key as the panel requests. An SSH key is useful for remote administration; store the private key securely and do not share it.
- Complete the installation and wait for the panel to report that the instance is ready. Connect over SSH using the address and access method shown for your instance.
Cloud-Init templates are an optional customization described by Contabo for certain Linux operating systems. They are not required for a basic Ubuntu installation, and the documentation does not establish that every template applies to Ubuntu.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s Linux installation guide documents an Ubuntu route using its OBS Studio PPA and apt. That guide is dated August 26, 2021 and says Ubuntu 18.04 or newer; because that is an older guide, first check OBS’s current Linux installation instructions and confirm support for the Ubuntu release you installed. Do not treat the historical minimum version as confirmation that the PPA or package is appropriate for every current Ubuntu release.

- Connect to the VPS over SSH and confirm that the intended Ubuntu release is installed.
- Review OBS’s current official Ubuntu instructions for that release. If the instructions still specify the documented PPA method, the commands are:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio sudo apt install obs-studio - Follow any prompts from apt, then check that the package installed. Package installation does not confirm that OBS can open a usable display, access a compatible graphics device or encode smoothly.
- Before configuring an unattended service, establish how OBS will run in the plan’s supported display environment. The available documentation does not validate a particular virtual display, launch command or service definition for Contabo, so obtain plan-specific guidance and test it rather than copying an unverified recipe.
Choose OBS settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate together. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not a guarantee of the VPS’s available bandwidth or encoding capacity.

OBS and YouTube also list H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among supported encoder codecs, with availability depending on the installed OBS build and compatible encoding hardware. Do not select a codec merely because it appears in a menu: verify that the encoder is actually available on the VPS and that your YouTube workflow supports it.

- Server: choose YouTube as the service and use RTMPS where available.
- Stream key: obtain the key from YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Output: set the encoder to CBR, use the bitrate row that matches your selected H.264 resolution and frame rate, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Do not exceed four seconds.
- Video: select a resolution and frame rate the VPS can encode continuously, rather than assuming that a setting OBS permits is sustainable on the server.
- Audio and scenes: configure the audio source and OBS scene you will actually use. Test with representative sound and motion; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that occur during the planned broadcast.
OBS says compatible hardware encoders can move encoding work away from the CPU, but availability depends on the hardware. If a hardware encoder is not exposed by the VPS, software encoding may place more load on the CPU; test the selected encoder and output rather than inferring performance from minimum compatibility requirements.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast using the final OBS scene, intended audio and representative movement.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. Check for dropped frames, connection warnings, audio problems or encoder overload, and make one change at a time so you can identify the cause.
- Confirm that the stream remains stable for a meaningful period at the resolution, frame rate and bitrate you plan to use. A successful connection at startup is not evidence of sustained capacity.
- Only after the test succeeds should you configure your own unattended launch and recovery approach. Verify that OBS starts in the working display environment after a reboot and that the stream can reconnect; the cited documentation does not provide a tested Contabo-specific automation recipe.
Common problems and what to check
- OBS installs but will not start: check whether the VPS has the required OpenGL capability and a running X or Wayland display environment. A package installation by itself does not provide or prove either prerequisite.
- OBS starts, but the encoder overloads: lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate and retest, or use a compatible hardware encoder if the VPS exposes one. The right setting depends on the actual plan and scene complexity.
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection: verify the RTMPS destination and stream key, then test outbound throughput and reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. The YouTube bitrate recommendations do not certify Contabo network capacity.
- The stream connects but looks poor or stutters: confirm that the bitrate matches the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, and use CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. Review YouTube stream health and retest with representative motion and audio.
- The stream stops after reboot or disconnect: confirm the OBS process starts in the required display environment and test reconnection behavior. No particular Contabo service configuration is verified here.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A successful encoder test does not establish that the content is permitted to stream or suitable for channel monetization. Before leaving a broadcast running, make sure you have the rights or permission for the video, music, images and other material in the stream. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies, and do not assume that repeating or compiling existing material is exempt from those rules or from monetization review.
