Browserless can be worth it when you need managed browser infrastructure and a simple HTTP request for stateless screenshot jobs. Its value depends on how long pages take to render, how many captures you run, concurrency, and whether you need proxies or CAPTCHA solving. Browserless’s public documentation describes capabilities and usage terms, but does not establish that it is faster, more reliable, or cheaper than alternatives for your workload.
What Browserless does for screenshot capture
Browserless provides a hosted REST endpoint for capturing a webpage or supplied HTML as an image. Send a POST request to /screenshot with an API token; the response contains image bytes. The current API documentation lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP output through the options.type setting, along with full-page capture, viewport configuration, quality, clipping, device scale factor, selector-based element capture, waits, and page configuration. It also documents injecting styles or scripts before capture. When rendering inline html, do not include url in the same request. See the current screenshot API reference.

The main convenience is that a caller can submit an HTTP request without installing or operating Puppeteer or Playwright locally. Browserless describes REST endpoints as suited to one browser task per request. Workflows that need to inspect a live page, react to changing content, or branch interactively may fit its browser connections or function execution better; see the REST API overview.

- Scheduled or event-driven snapshots of public pages, dashboards, or reports that allow automated browser access.
- Full-page or selected-element captures used in documentation, visual monitoring, or downstream image processing.
- Rendering generated HTML into an image without deploying a browser runtime in your own application.
- Services that can make an HTTP request and store or process the returned image bytes.
These are use cases inferred from the documented API, not independent test results. Browserless also documents a screenshot example and BrowserQL screenshot operations for teams using its declarative browser interface: screenshot example and BrowserQL screenshot use case.

- WINDOW SCREEN REMOVAL TOOL: Designed to easily engage, lift, and remove window screens without damaging frames or mesh.
- Durable Nylon Construction – Made from high-strength, impact-resistant nylon that's tough enough to handle repeated use yet gentle on delicate surfaces, won't rust or corrode like metal tools.
- DUAL-END DESIGN: Features a forked end to engage and lift screen edges and a flat pry tip on the opposite end for versatile use.
- HIGH-VISIBILITY COLOR: Bright orange construction makes this tool easy to spot and prevents it from being misplaced on the job site.
- DIY-FRIENDLY: The ideal tool for homeowners and professionals tackling window screen repair, replacement, or seasonal removal tasks.
What can go wrong with a capture
A request returning image bytes does not guarantee that the image contains the page content you wanted. The result may be blank or incomplete, or show a CAPTCHA or access-denied page if a site blocks automation. Dynamic content may not have loaded when capture begins, and lazy-loaded images may require scrolling. Browserless recommends configuring waits and scrolling for these cases; it describes an /unblock path for bot-detection situations, but that is a technical option, not a guarantee that every protected site will work. Consult the screenshot troubleshooting guidance.
For new work, use the current screenshot API documentation. The older BaaS v1 screenshot reference is marked deprecated and points users to current BaaS v2 or BrowserQL material.

How Browserless bills screenshot usage
Browserless meters browser session time in units of up to 30 seconds, rounding partial increments up. For example, a 31-second session consumes two time units. Its usage documentation says the same metering applies to REST API requests. Proxy traffic and successful CAPTCHA solves can add materially to the total: residential proxy traffic is listed at six units per MB, datacenter proxy traffic at two units per MB, and a successful CAPTCHA solve at ten units. These are Browserless’s published terms; confirm the current details in its unit consumption documentation.
Published plan figures
The Browserless pricing page displayed the figures below when checked on October 3, 2026 (UTC). Paid prices shown are billed annually; these are live commercial terms and can change, so confirm them on the pricing page before making a purchase decision.
| Plan | Published price | Included monthly units | Published overage rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | 1,000 | Not stated |
| Prototyping | $25/month, billed annually | 20,000 | $0.0020 per overage unit |
| Starter | $140/month, billed annually | 180,000 | $0.0017 per overage unit |
| Scale | $350/month, billed annually | 500,000 | $0.0015 per overage unit |
The pricing page also lists plan-specific concurrency and maximum session durations. Check those limits for the plan you are considering; do not assume a tier’s monthly units alone determine whether it can handle your peak workload.
How to decide whether Browserless is worth the cost
Start with your own pages and expected traffic, rather than treating a monthly unit allowance as a fixed number of screenshots. A simple estimate needs the session duration per capture, including navigation and waits, plus any proxy bandwidth or CAPTCHA solving. Because partial 30-second increments round up, captures close to a billing boundary may consume another unit. Actual page complexity and timing vary, so there is no universal cost per screenshot established by the published terms.
Rank #4
- Estimate monthly captures and session time. Measure representative pages, including the time needed for content to load and any configured waits.
- Translate time into units. Count each started 30-second session interval as one unit, then include any proxy or CAPTCHA usage that applies.
- Check capacity, not just allowance. Compare expected monthly usage with the plan’s units, concurrency, and maximum session duration. Account for peak periods and any queueing your service needs.
- Test capture correctness on target pages. Check dynamic content, lazy-loaded images, access controls, and behavior when automation is blocked. Include failures and retries in the operational evaluation.
- Compare the whole operating cost. Weigh the subscription and overages against the engineering and maintenance cost of running browsers yourself or using another browser automation setup. Use the same workload when comparing alternatives.
- Verify deployment requirements. Check data handling, geography, and enterprise requirements for the specific account and deployment; public plan figures alone do not answer those questions.
A low-volume prototype can use the published free allowance to exercise its own pages. For production, make the decision from measured unit consumption, capture correctness, failure and retry behavior, and concurrency under the workload you expect. Browserless documents cloud, self-hosting, REST, BrowserQL, and Puppeteer/Playwright connection options on its product overview; which one fits depends on whether managed operations or infrastructure control matters more to your team.
