Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There is no universal Puppeteer event that means an infinite-scroll feed is finished. Define stability for the page you are automating, then use page.waitForFunction() to watch a meaningful signal—such as an increase in feed-item count, a loading indicator changing state, or an explicit end marker. Scroll to trigger loading, wait for the signal, and bound the loop with timeouts and a maximum number of rounds.
Define what “stable” means for this feed
A wait can only test a condition you specify. Before writing the loop, inspect the target page and identify:

- The feed item selector and the element that actually scrolls: the document or an inner container.
- A loading indicator or state, if the site exposes one.
- An end-of-feed marker, if the feed has a genuine endpoint.
Item count is a useful signal when each newly loaded entry adds a DOM element. It may be insufficient if the site replaces items, virtualizes the list, or reuses a fixed set of DOM nodes. In those cases, watch a site-specific loading state, cursor, or end marker instead. There is no selector or quiet-period threshold that works for every site.

Use a bounded scroll-and-observe loop
The basic sequence is to record the current state, scroll far enough to trigger the feed, and wait for an observable change. Continue while the feed grows; stop only when the site signals the end or your explicitly chosen no-growth policy says to stop. A wait by itself does not trigger more content to load.

const items = '.feed-item';
const endMarker = '.feed-end';
const maxRounds = 5;
async function countItems() {
return page.$$eval(items, nodes => nodes.length);
}
let previous = await countItems();
let unchangedRounds = 0;
while (unchangedRounds < maxRounds) {
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, document.body.scrollHeight));
try {
await page.waitForFunction(
({ items, previous, endMarker }) =>
document.querySelectorAll(items).length > previous ||
Boolean(document.querySelector(endMarker)),
{ timeout: 10_000, polling: 'mutation' },
{ items, previous, endMarker },
);
} catch (error) {
// A timeout means no matching change was observed within this round.
// Apply the caller's bounded no-growth policy; do not treat it as proof of an end.
}
const current = await countItems();
const ended = Boolean(await page.$(endMarker));
if (ended) break;
if (current === previous) unchangedRounds++;
else unchangedRounds = 0;
previous = current;
}
This is an illustrative pattern, not a site-independent drop-in routine. In production, adapt the selector and scrolling target, account for the site’s loading state, and choose a no-growth limit that fits the task. A feed without a credible end marker may continue indefinitely, so reaching the limit means “no growth observed under this policy,” not “the feed is definitely complete.”
Scroll an inner feed container when required
If the page keeps a fixed document height while a panel scrolls, window.scrollTo() will not trigger the feed. Scroll the panel instead, for example by setting its scrollTop to its scrollHeight in the page context. Use the actual container selector and verify that it is the element whose scroll position changes.
Wait for the right kind of change
page.waitForFunction() evaluates a predicate in the page and resolves when it becomes truthy; arguments can be passed to that predicate. Puppeteer documents 'raf', 'mutation', and numeric polling intervals. Use mutation polling when relevant DOM changes are the signal; use animation-frame polling for conditions that change through rendering or styling. A numeric interval is another option when a page’s condition is not reliably tied to DOM mutations. The documented default wait timeout is 30 seconds; set a finite per-wait timeout or configure the default with Page.setDefaultTimeout(). Puppeteer waitForFunction API and wait timeout options.

Why network idle does not prove the feed is finished
Network-idle waits observe transport activity, not the application’s promise that no more feed items will appear. Puppeteer’s waitForNetworkIdle() accepts a concurrent-connection threshold (documented default: 0) and an idle interval (documented default: 500 ms). The navigation lifecycle labels networkidle0 and networkidle2 mean no more than zero or two network connections, respectively, for at least 500 ms. Those conditions can be useful after a request, but a later scroll observer or delayed request may still load another page. waitForNetworkIdle API and lifecycle events.
Use network idle as a secondary signal when it helps with a specific site—for example, after observing a feed-state change—not as a general completion test. Persistent connections can also prevent a chosen idle condition from occurring.
Choose a stopping policy that matches the task
| Signal | What it tells you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Item-count increase or loading-state transition | The feed changed in a way you defined. | It does not establish that no later batch will load; virtualized feeds may not increase the DOM count. |
| Explicit end marker | The page claims the feed has reached its end. | It is only useful if the site exposes a reliable marker. |
| Network idle | Connections stayed below the configured threshold for the configured interval. | It is a transport condition, not a guarantee that a future scroll cannot load more. |
| Fixed delay | A chosen amount of time elapsed. | It can finish too early on slow loads or waste time when the page responds quickly. |
| Bounded no-growth rounds | No qualifying change appeared across the number of attempts your policy allows. | It is an operational stopping rule, not proof that the feed has a final item. |
Prefer an application-state predicate to a sleep alone: it can proceed as soon as the desired change appears, while a fixed delay cannot distinguish a completed load from a slow one. Keep finite timeouts and an overall round limit so a broken or truly endless feed cannot hang the automation.

Troubleshoot common failures
The wait times out, but items appear later
The timeout may be shorter than the site’s load time, or the predicate may watch the wrong selector or state. Confirm the selector against the live DOM, inspect whether the feed has an intermediate loading state, and adjust the finite timeout to the page’s behavior. Do not disable the timeout as a substitute for a completion policy.

Scrolling does not load another batch
Check whether the page or an inner panel is the scrolling element. Confirm that the scroll position actually changes and that the feed’s trigger point has been reached. If the page uses a virtualized list, item count may stay constant even as content changes; watch an appropriate item identifier or application state instead.
The loop stops while more content exists
A no-growth round only means your predicate did not detect a change in that interval. The request may be delayed, or the selector may miss the update. Use a suitable loading-state transition, a longer bounded wait, or a stricter no-growth policy. If the page has no authoritative end marker, report completion as policy-based rather than certain.

The wait never becomes idle
A persistent connection or background traffic can keep the network-idle condition from being met. Prefer a feed-specific predicate; if network idle remains useful as a secondary condition, set its concurrency threshold and idle interval deliberately rather than assuming the defaults fit the page.
A locator says an element is stable, but the feed keeps loading
Puppeteer locator actions wait for a stable bounding box across two consecutive animation frames. That check concerns the element’s position and is distinct from stability of the feed’s contents. Use an application-state predicate to observe feed changes. Puppeteer page interactions guide.

If you need a screenshot rather than a custom Puppeteer automation loop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
For a feed screenshot, account for the fact that a single capture request does not implement a custom multi-scroll Puppeteer loop. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, but whether that captures every item in a particular dynamic feed depends on how the site loads it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Puppeteer detect that an infinite feed will never load another item?
Not universally. Without a reliable end marker or application-level completion signal, automation can only apply a bounded policy such as no growth across a chosen number of rounds.
Which Puppeteer polling mode should I use for waitForFunction?
Choose based on the predicate: mutation polling for DOM changes, animation-frame polling for render or style changes, or a numeric interval when neither event source is appropriate.
