Console specs describe what a system is built to do; they do not guarantee how a particular game will look or run. The CPU handles instructions and simulation, the GPU renders images and effects, memory is the system’s short-term working space, and storage holds installed games and feeds data to the console. To judge real performance, check the game’s own resolution and frame-rate modes, then compare the exact console model and its storage options.
What console specifications can—and cannot—tell you
A spec sheet is useful for understanding a console’s hardware and supported features. It is not a standardized gaming benchmark. Architecture, software, a game’s workload, and developer choices all shape the result, so a core count, clock speed, or teraflop figure cannot establish which console will run every game best.
Resolution and frame rate are separate performance measures. Resolution describes how many pixels are rendered; frame rate describes how many images are shown each second. A game may trade resolution or visual effects for a higher frame rate, and a console’s supported output is not proof that a specific game renders at that resolution and frame rate together.
For example, Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Series X technical article describes a 4K-at-60-FPS performance target and support for up to 120 FPS. It also says resolution and frame rate are creative decisions for game developers. Nintendo’s Switch 2 US specifications list supported TV output modes, including up to 4K at 60 fps and 120 fps at selected lower resolutions. Those are platform output capabilities, not promises about each game’s internal rendering.

CPU: instructions, simulation, and preparing frames
The central processing unit (CPU) executes instructions. In games, that can include game rules, world simulation, character and object behavior, and coordinating work that needs to be ready for each frame. CPU capability can affect how much simulation a game performs and how consistently it prepares frames, but a clock speed or core count alone does not predict frame rate. Architecture, workload, software optimization, and how work is scheduled matter too.
Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Series X article lists an eight-core Zen 2 CPU running at 3.8 GHz, or 3.6 GHz with simultaneous multithreading (SMT). Sony’s PS5 CFI-21XX manual lists an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU. These are published specifications for the identified hardware, not a direct performance test between platforms.

GPU: rendering images and visual effects
The graphics processing unit (GPU) renders a game’s images, including geometry, surfaces, lighting, and visual effects. Greater graphics capability can give developers room to target more pixels, richer effects, or additional headroom for a chosen frame rate. Those goals compete for resources: demanding effects or higher resolution can leave less available for frame rate or other visual detail.
Sony’s PS5 architecture article discusses how additional GPU power can support higher resolution and describes ray tracing as simulating how light moves and bounces from surfaces. Microsoft’s Series X technical article lists a custom RDNA 2 GPU and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. These are platform capabilities; a game may not use a feature, or may use it with a trade-off in resolution or frame rate.

Teraflops (TFLOPS) are a theoretical measure associated with compute throughput, not a universal score for game quality. GPU architecture, memory behavior, software, engine, resolution, and visual settings all affect what players see. A comparison based on one TFLOPS figure leaves out too much to declare a definitive winner.
Memory: working space while the game runs
System memory, commonly called RAM, is temporary working space for the console and running software. A game can keep active program state and data there for the system to use; it is distinct from the drive or flash storage where installed games remain. Turning off a console does not erase installed games, but RAM serves a different, in-use role.

Capacity is only one part of memory performance. Bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors. Manufacturers may also reserve or divide memory for system software, so raw capacity figures are not always directly comparable.
- Xbox Series X: Xbox Wire lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, with separate bandwidth figures for 10 GB and 6 GB portions in its 2020 technical article.
- PS5 CFI-21XX: Sony’s manual lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory for those models.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo’s public US technical specifications list a custom NVIDIA processor and 256 GB of UFS storage, but do not state a system-memory capacity. The page notes that some internal storage is reserved for system use.
Storage: installed capacity, loading, and asset streaming
Storage holds installed games and other data. Its capacity chiefly determines how much you can keep installed at once. Storage throughput and the console’s input/output (I/O) path can also affect how quickly game data is read, how long loading takes, and how a game streams assets as you move through a world. More capacity means more room; faster access can help when the game and platform make use of it.

PlayStation’s 2020 PS5 architecture post describes the console’s SSD and custom I/O as designed to reduce loading barriers and support fast asset streaming. That design goal does not mean every game has no loading. Xbox Wire’s 2020 Series X article lists a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD and I/O throughput of 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed using custom hardware. Those figures are from that dated technical article; current advertised models offer different capacities.
Check the exact model before comparing capacity. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists 825 GB or 1 TB custom SSDs depending on model. Microsoft’s current Series X page describes 1 TB and 2 TB SSD choices. Nintendo lists 256 GB UFS storage for Switch 2 and notes that some space is reserved for system use. Advertised capacity is not necessarily all available for games.
Published specifications: useful examples, not a cross-console ranking
| Platform and source | Published details | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 CFI-21XX manual | 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU; 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU; 16 GB GDDR6; 825 GB or 1 TB custom SSD depending on model; M.2 expansion connector. | Applies to the identified manual and model family. Sony says the manual’s information may change without notice. |
| Xbox Series X official materials | 8-core Zen 2 CPU; custom RDNA 2 GPU; 16 GB GDDR6 with a published bandwidth split; 1 TB custom NVMe SSD in the 2020 technical article; storage expansion card option. | The technical figures are from Xbox Wire’s 2020 article; Microsoft’s current page describes multiple SSD capacities. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 US specifications | Custom NVIDIA processor; 256 GB UFS internal storage; microSD Express slot supporting cards up to 2 TB; supported display-output modes. | The public page does not state system-memory capacity, and some internal storage is reserved for system use. |
The figures above are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from a standardized, independent cross-console benchmark. They describe hardware; they do not establish title-by-title performance.
How to compare consoles for the games you play
- Find the game’s specific modes. Look for the developer’s resolution and frame-rate options, including any performance or quality modes. Check what display is needed to use them.
- Check the visual features in that game. A platform may support ray tracing, but confirm whether the title uses it and what happens to resolution or frame rate when it is enabled.
- Read CPU and GPU figures in context. Consider architecture, workload, and optimization rather than treating core count, clock speed, or TFLOPS as a verdict.
- Compare memory cautiously. Look at both capacity and bandwidth where published, while accounting for differences in system reservations and architecture.
- Check the exact storage model and expansion rules. Compare available capacity, loading behavior in games that matter to you, and officially supported expansion types.
- Factor in how you play. Your library, handheld or docked use, display, and willingness to delete or reinstall games can matter more than a headline number.
What to check before expanding storage
PS5: choose a qualifying M.2 SSD
Sony says a commercially available M.2 SSD that meets the required specifications can be installed in the PS5. M.2 storage can hold PS5 game data. A PS5 game on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. Check Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation requirements for the supported capacity, interface, speed, and heatsink requirements; not every M.2 NVMe drive qualifies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSwitch 2: use microSD Express for expansion
Nintendo specifies a microSD Express card slot supporting cards up to 2 TB. The Switch 2 specifications say microSD cards that are not compatible with microSD Express can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch. An older microSD card is therefore not equivalent for Switch 2 game-storage expansion.
