Connect Google Nest to Wi-Fi: Setup, Network Changes, and Fixes

Set up a Nest or Home speaker or display in Google Home, reconnect it after a Wi-Fi change, and troubleshoot signal, password, router, or discovery problems. Cameras and doorbells follow a separate process.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Nest or Home speaker or display, connect to Wi-Fi through the Google Home app. If you changed your network name or password, forget the saved network in the app and set the device up again. Cameras and doorbells use a different Wi-Fi-change process, so identify your device type before following steps.

Connect a Nest speaker or display to Wi-Fi

Nest and Home speakers and displays remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. To connect one that is not currently online, use the Google Home app rather than trying to add a second saved network.

  1. Plug in and power on the speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app on your phone or tablet.
  3. Choose the app’s add-device flow and follow the on-screen instructions to find and set up the device.
  4. Keep the phone near the speaker or display while setup runs. Google’s setup guidance gives a range of 5–20 feet; closer is preferable.

If the network does not appear, make sure the device is near the router and has a strong signal where it will be used. Google advises checking that the device is within 15–20 feet of the router during network-list troubleshooting. If you use a 5 GHz network, the setup phone must support 5 GHz. See Google’s speaker and display Wi-Fi setup instructions and setup troubleshooting guidance.

Change the saved Wi-Fi network on a speaker or display

When the Wi-Fi name or password changes, remove the old network entry in Google Home, then run setup again on the new network.

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
  1. In Google Home, open the speaker or display’s device tile.
  2. Open Settings, then Device information, then Wi-Fi.
  3. Choose Forget This network.
  4. Return to the app’s home screen and set up the speaker or display again, selecting the new Wi-Fi network.

If the app cannot communicate with the device or the forget-and-setup process fails, Google’s fallback is to factory reset the device and set it up again. A factory reset clears device data, so treat it as a later troubleshooting step, not the first fix. Google’s full procedure is in its Wi-Fi connection instructions.

Change Wi-Fi on a Nest camera or doorbell

Do not use the speaker-and-display steps for cameras or doorbells. Use the app that was used to set up the camera or doorbell. If you replace a router but reuse the old Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, many Nest cameras and doorbells may reconnect automatically.

  • The product is refurbished, is fully functional and in excellent condition. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.

If that does not work, Google says Wi-Fi details for cameras and doorbells cannot be updated in the Google Home app. In most cases, the process is to factory reset the device, remove it from the app, and add it again using the new network. Save any important video clips before starting. Follow Google’s camera and doorbell Wi-Fi change instructions.

Why won’t my Google Nest connect to Wi-Fi?

Start by determining whether the issue is the internet connection, the Wi-Fi credentials, signal, or app discovery. Work through the checks in order; resetting the Nest device is not the first step.

Google Nest WiFi Pro - 6E - Reliable Home Wi-Fi System with Fast Speed and Whole Home Coverage - Mesh Router - 3 Pack - Snow
  • Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
  • Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
  • Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
  • Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
  • It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
  • No devices can get online: Check whether the home internet service is working. Restart the router. If service does not return, contact your internet service provider.
  • Other devices work, but Nest does not: Recheck the Wi-Fi password, move the speaker or display closer to the router, and restart both the router and Nest device.
  • You have a dual-band router: Try setup on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks if both are available. The setup phone must support 5 GHz to use a 5 GHz network.
  • The network is missing from the setup list: Check the device’s distance from the router and signal strength. Keep the setup phone near the Nest device as well.
  • The phone cannot find the device: Check that the device is powered on and in setup mode, update the Google Home app, restart the device and reopen the app. If possible, try another compatible phone or tablet.

Google’s troubleshooting page gives Android 9.0 or later and iOS 16.0 or later as phone requirements, and recommends the latest Google Home app. Requirements can change, so check the current instructions for your device and app version. For additional steps, including trying the device’s temporary setup network, consult Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page and instructions for a speaker or display the app cannot find.

Networks that may not work for setup

Google warns that public Wi-Fi, business or shared networks, school or university networks, mobile hotspots, and pocket Wi-Fi may not support speaker or display setup. This is a compatibility warning, not proof that every network in those categories will fail.

A hotspot can be a diagnostic test: if the device connects to it but not to home Wi-Fi, it can connect to Wi-Fi, and the home network may be the obstacle. Hotspots are not officially supported, and whether one works can depend on the carrier, signal, interference, and plan. If other devices use home Wi-Fi successfully but Nest still cannot connect after the checks above, ask the network provider for help. See Google’s guidance on connection failures and hotspots.
