For an existing eero network with a wireless coverage gap, the eero 6 Extender is the most direct add-on. It connects wirelessly through the eero app and eero lists coverage of up to 1,500 sq ft per device. It is not a router replacement: it cannot serve as the gateway, has no Ethernet port, and does not work with a non-eero router.
Which eero extender should you choose?
Choose the eero 6 Extender if you already have an eero gateway and want to extend coverage without running Ethernet to the added device. If you need a new gateway, Ethernet ports, or wired backhaul, compare an Ethernet-equipped eero model that supports those needs instead. eero says compatible models can be combined, though mixing generations may affect performance.

eero’s product comparison describes the eero 6 Extender as a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 wireless extender, with support for 75+ devices and coverage up to 1,500 sq ft per device. These are manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed results in a particular home. The extender joins the network wirelessly through the eero app; it has no Ethernet port and cannot provide wired backhaul.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
eero lists wireless speeds up to 900 Mbps for the model in its product comparison. Separately, eero’s explanation of network speed gives the eero 6 Extender a maximum combined speed of up to 500 Mbps. These are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable or as a promise of the speed a device will receive. See eero’s explanation of network speed figures.
Actual range and performance vary with network configuration, interference, connected devices, building materials, and obstructions. A published square-foot maximum alone is not a reliable way to determine how many nodes your layout needs.

When another eero node is the better choice
You need a gateway
An eero network needs a gateway eero connected to the modem over Ethernet. The eero 6 Extender cannot fill that role, so choose a gateway-capable eero if you are building the network or replacing its gateway.
You want Ethernet or wired backhaul
If your home has Ethernet wiring, an Ethernet-equipped eero can use it for backhaul—the connection between eero nodes. eero recommends Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a cable for connecting supported eero devices. The eero 6 Extender itself cannot use a cable because it has no Ethernet port. Details are in eero’s Ethernet connection guidance.

You need capabilities from another model
Compare the specific model’s ports and Wi-Fi features against your gateway, devices, and connection needs. eero says supported models can be combined, but mixing generations may affect performance; do not assume every eero model has the same specifications.
How to decide where the extender belongs
- Confirm that your existing router and gateway are eero. The eero 6 Extender is not compatible with a non-eero router.
- Check whether you need Ethernet at the extender location. If so, choose an Ethernet-equipped node rather than the wireless-only extender.
- Consider the route between the gateway and the weak-signal area. Walls, building materials, distance, interference, and other obstructions affect coverage.
- Compare device and Wi-Fi requirements with the specifications of the exact eero model you are considering, rather than choosing by coverage claims alone.
eero’s compatibility article explains that the 6 Extender cannot be used with a non-eero router: eero 6 Extender and non-eero router compatibility.
