The best ultra short throw (UST) projector depends on your room and what you watch: the Hisense PX4 Pro is the most broadly versatile option in the cited 2026 coverage, while the Hisense PT1 suits controlled-light rooms and the Formovie Cinema Edge is a lower-budget alternative. This is a use-case shortlist, not a universal ranking: reviews cover different models, dates, and price points, and there is no single comparable independent test set for all five picks.
What is the best ultra short throw projector?
For a mix of films, everyday viewing, and gaming, the Hisense PX4 Pro is the most natural all-rounder among these picks. What Hi-Fi? describes it as a multipurpose model, but its reported launch prices were £2,499, $3,999, and AU$4,499; those are launch-period figures, not current quotes. Hisense’s reported peak-brightness and contrast figures are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. What Hi-Fi?’s PX4 Pro review gives the model context.

For a more affordable choice, consider the Formovie Cinema Edge, provided its guide-era price still holds in your region. For a bright picture in a room where you can control light, the Hisense PT1 is another value-oriented candidate. These distinctions matter more than treating unlike tests or specifications as a single league table.

Which UST projector is best for my room?
| Pick | Best suited to | Published details | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hisense PX4 Pro | Mixed-use living room: films, TV, and gaming | What Hi-Fi? reports Hisense claims 3,500-lumen peak brightness, a seven-level iris, and 6,500:1 contrast. Reported launch prices: £2,499 / $3,999 / AU$4,499. | Brightness and contrast figures are manufacturer claims; launch prices are not live regional prices. What Hi-Fi? |
| Hisense PT1 | Controlled-light rooms and screens up to 120 inches | ProjectorCentral lists 4K DLP (3840 × 2160), a laser light source, 2,500 ANSI lumens, and a 1 ft 5 in throw distance. | ProjectorCentral’s reviewer describes it as an excellent-value RGB-laser UST; the listed brightness is not directly comparable with figures using other standards. ProjectorCentral |
| Formovie Cinema Edge | Lower-budget 4K viewing | TechRadar lists 1,900 ISO lumens, an 80–150-inch image range, and three HDMI 2.1 inputs, one with eARC. Its guide listed $1,799 / £1,799. | The price is guide-era and should be checked locally. HDR support is HDR10 and HLG, without Dolby Vision or HDR10+; TechRadar also notes weaker color than RGB-laser rivals. TechRadar |
| LG CineBeam HU915QE | Picture quality, where available | TechRadar lists 4K, up to 3,700 ANSI lumens, a 90–120-inch image range, and three HDMI inputs, one with eARC. | Check the exact regional model suffix and local availability. “Up to” is the guide’s published specification, not a like-for-like independent measurement. TechRadar |
| AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro | Those following RTINGS’ current UST recommendation | RTINGS’ July 2026 update names the Aetherion Pro as its best UST pick, replacing the Hisense PX3-Pro. | This is RTINGS’ recommendation, not a universal winner; the Aetherion Pro is distinct from the Aetherion Max. RTINGS |
The table reflects the cited 2026 coverage, not a synchronized stock or price check. Published brightness figures use different standards and sources: for example, PT1’s 2,500 ANSI lumens and Formovie’s 1,900 ISO lumens are not a controlled comparison, and PX4 Pro’s peak figure is a manufacturer claim.

Which UST projector is best for gaming, movies, or sports?
Gaming
The PX4 Pro is presented by What Hi-Fi? as a multipurpose gaming option. TechRadar highlights the older PX3-Pro’s HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz, and 1080p/240Hz support, but describes the PX4 Pro as its successor. Treat the PX3-Pro as a possible value buy only if it remains available at a worthwhile local price; its features should not be assumed to apply to the successor. TechRadar’s guide covers the PX3-Pro, and What Hi-Fi? covers the PX4 Pro.
Movies
For film viewing, choose based on your room’s light and the screen size you will actually use. The PT1 is described by ProjectorCentral as best suited to controlled lighting and up to a 120-inch screen. The Cinema Edge offers a wider stated image-size range, but its HDR-format support is narrower than models that include Dolby Vision or HDR10+.

With AWOL ALR Daylight screen, enjoy bright, clear images even during the day. Best with 150” screen to replace traditional TVs for an unmatched big-screen experience.
Sports
TechRadar names the Epson EpiQVision Ultra LS800 as its sports pick, but the available guide evidence does not provide enough technical detail here for a fair specification comparison. Consider it a separate candidate and consult its full review before choosing it over the models in the table. TechRadar’s UST guide explains the use-case label.

No screen is universally required, but the surface and room lighting affect the result. A suitable wall may work, while a UST-compatible ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen can help in some brighter rooms. Check that the screen is specifically appropriate for UST projection, and confirm whether the exact model package includes one: bundles vary by model and region. ProjectorCentral and TechRadar’s guide discuss the relevant models and packages.

How much space do I need for a UST projector?
UST means the projector sits very close to the screen compared with a conventional projector; it does not mean the setup needs no planning. The required placement depends on the model and desired image size. ProjectorCentral lists the PT1 at a 1 ft 5 in throw distance, but that figure is specific to that model and should not be generalized. Use the model’s own throw chart to confirm the projector position and image dimensions before buying.
- Measure the usable screen or wall area and decide on a target image size.
- Check that model’s throw chart and required placement for that image size.
- Measure the furniture surface and confirm the projector can sit at the required position without overhang or obstruction.
- Plan cable routes and access to power and HDMI connections.
- Check whether the screen package, if any, matches your room and projector.
Setup can be fiddly: What Hi-Fi? reviewer Alastair Stevenson wrote in a September 16, 2026 shootout that “there is nothing simple about setting up a UST projector.” Allow time to align the image rather than expecting placement to be plug-and-play. What Hi-Fi?’s UST shootout gives that setup context.

What should you check before buying?
- Regional model and availability: Verify the exact model name and suffix sold where you live. The HU915QE’s availability and suffix should be checked locally.
- Current price: Prices in reviews and buying guides can become outdated. PX4 Pro launch prices and the Cinema Edge guide-era price are not current retail quotes.
- Brightness provenance: Keep ANSI, ISO, and manufacturer-claimed peak figures distinct; they do not establish a controlled comparison across these models.
- Included screen: Confirm the specific package contents rather than assuming a screen is included or required.
- Smart platform and sound: Check the built-in interface and audio against your needs. Integrated features may be enough without separate equipment; external sound or streaming gear is optional, not a general requirement.
- Firmware and compatibility: Verify current platform support and the inputs/features you need with the seller or manufacturer for the exact regional unit.
Recommendations in this shortlist draw on coverage updated through July 2026 and sources reviewed or published in 2026. The models were not evaluated together under one test protocol, so use-case fit and independently reported details are more useful than a strict 1-to-5 ranking.
