You can connect a Samsung Galaxy phone to a MacBook by USB to copy files, or use Samsung Smart Switch for a supported backup or restore. For wireless sharing with an Apple device, Quick Share works only on select Galaxy S26-series phones under Samsung’s stated software requirements.
Choose the connection method for your goal
| Your goal | Method | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Copy individual files over a cable | USB file-transfer mode, then Finder | Use a data-capable cable and select the transfer mode on the phone. Samsung’s connection instructions. |
| Back up or restore supported phone content | Smart Switch for Mac | It covers supported content, not necessarily every file type or a complete readable copy. Samsung’s Smart Switch guide. |
| Share a file wirelessly with a compatible Apple device | Quick Share and AirDrop | Samsung lists select Galaxy S26-series models and software requirements; it is not general Mac file-system access. Samsung Quick Share details. |
Transfer files over USB and Finder
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the MacBook with a USB cable that supports data transfer. Check that the cable ends fit the ports on both devices; an unsuitable cable may charge without transferring files.
- Unlock the phone, open its USB notification, and select Transferring files/Android auto. Samsung also documents an image-transfer option through the USB notification.
- Open Finder on the Mac and look for the connected phone. Browse its available files and copy the items you need.
These are Samsung’s published steps for its supported connection workflow; behavior can depend on the phone, Mac, and software versions. Samsung advises using a high-quality cable and checking that both devices support the selected USB function.

If the phone charges but files do not appear
- Keep the phone unlocked and confirm that the USB notification is set to file transfer rather than charging only.
- Reconnect the devices and try a different cable known to support data transfer. Check that both connectors fit securely.
- Restart the phone and Mac if the correct mode and cable do not resolve the connection.
Google’s Android USB guidance also warns that some USB cables do not transfer files, though its listed computer procedures cover Windows and Chromebook rather than Mac: Google Android Help.

Smart Switch for Mac is Samsung’s desktop option for backing up and restoring supported phone content. Samsung lists macOS 10.9 or later as its published Mac minimum. That minimum is not a guarantee that every current Smart Switch release and phone combination will work identically, so check compatibility for your device.

Samsung lists supported Android content such as contacts, schedule, messages, photos and videos, music, and documents. Some additional settings and app data apply to transfers between Galaxy devices. Not every file type is supported, and some backed-up content cannot be read on a Mac. Check Samsung’s supported-content and compatibility information before relying on Smart Switch for a particular data type.
Allow enough Mac storage for the backup. Samsung says Smart Switch does not automatically delete the original phone data or older backups. It is a backup and migration tool for supported content, not a general-purpose replacement for browsing and copying files in Finder.

Share wirelessly with Quick Share and AirDrop
Samsung’s Quick Share page says that, as of March 2026, sharing with Apple devices is supported on Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra with current Quick Share and Google Play Services versions. The receiving Apple device must make AirDrop available according to Samsung’s instructions. This is a model- and software-limited way to share files, not universal access to the phone’s storage from a Mac. Samsung also notes that Wi-Fi may temporarily disconnect while the phone searches for or shares with an iOS device, and availability may change. See Samsung’s Quick Share requirements and instructions.

What to check before connecting
- Phone and Mac ports: Confirm that the cable fits both devices, directly or through an appropriate adapter, and supports data rather than charging alone.
- Purpose: Use Finder for individual file copying, Smart Switch for supported backup or restore, and Quick Share only when the Galaxy model and receiving-device setup meet Samsung’s requirements.
- Compatibility: The phone model and macOS release can affect behavior. Smart Switch’s published minimum is macOS 10.9, but verify current compatibility for the exact phone and app version.
Samsung’s 2024 Italy support page also mentions Android File Transfer for Mac, but that older guidance does not establish its current availability or support. For the main procedure, follow Samsung’s current US USB instructions instead: Connection options for your Galaxy phone or tablet.
