There is no required route order in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave: Nintendo says you can play its four hero storylines in any order and switch between them. For a guided first run, a reasonable option is Cai → Leda → Theodora → Dietrich. That is a recommendation from guide writers, not an official sequence; if you would rather prioritize combat strength, starting with Dietrich is another published suggestion.
Is there a correct route order?
No. Nintendo’s launch announcement says the four individual storylines can be played in any order, and that you can pause one path to jump to another. The game is designed to let you choose without committing to an irreversible route decision.

That means “best” depends on what you want from the opening: a straightforward introduction, access to particular combat abilities, or a character’s story. The route order below is a structured suggestion, not a requirement or a claim that the sequence changes the ending.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA guided first playthrough: Cai, Leda, Theodora, then Dietrich
Both Dot Esports and Nintendo Insider recommend this sequence. Their reasoning reflects their writers’ experience and interpretation of the routes, rather than developer-mandated progression.
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
- Cai: Dot Esports considers this an approachable introduction, pointing to simpler early objectives, more limited map access, and systems and side content that help orient a new player.
- Leda: The same guide places Leda second as a lighter route to manage after Cai.
- Theodora: Nintendo Insider’s writer found this path more challenging than Leda, making it a natural step up in that author’s suggested progression.
- Dietrich: Both guides leave Dietrich for last; Nintendo Insider’s author describes his path as the hardest based on their playthrough.
Dot Esports also reports that map data, subquests, and Boon upgrades carry over after completing a route, and uses that as a reason to finish one Part I path before moving to another. Treat this as that guide’s account and advice, not as Nintendo’s official route-order rule. Read Dot Esports’ route-order guide or Nintendo Insider’s recommendation for their full reasoning.
Prefer combat utility? Consider Dietrich, then Leda
Nintendo Life offers a different opening: start with Dietrich for his combat strengths and useful Blaze Arts, then play Leda to gain access to support-focused abilities. Its guide stresses that any of the four heroes can be a satisfying first choice, so this is best understood as an option for players who value those abilities over the Cai-first onboarding rationale.

You do not have to abandon a storyline to try another. Nintendo confirms that you can pause a path and jump to a different one. Nintendo Life describes this practical sequence for switching:
Recommended Free Tools
- Reach Dagsion and interact with a Pale Raven’s Perch.
- Return to the Obelisk Chamber.
- Select another hero at an obelisk to begin or resume that storyline.
Nintendo Life says each storyline’s progress saves automatically. Producer Genki Yokota has also explained that locations unlocked on the world map in one path become available in other paths once players reach a certain point. That additional detail comes from a translated mirror of Nintendo interview material; Nintendo’s launch announcement is the primary source for the general ability to switch paths.
