Download the books you want first; while disconnected, new purchases and cloud sync must wait until you reconnect. The practical benefit is fewer connected functions—not a proven improvement in attention, reading volume, or battery life.
What changes when you turn off Wi-Fi
Your Paperwhite loses internet access while Wi-Fi is off. That means you cannot use the connection to purchase or download books, or sync reading data with Amazon’s servers. Books already downloaded to the device remain available to read offline.

For a focused reading session, the immediate difference is practical: the device cannot fetch new content or update cloud data until it reconnects. Whether that changes your reading habits depends on your own routine; Amazon’s guidance does not establish that disconnecting increases attention or reading time.
Prepare the Paperwhite before going offline
- Connect to Wi-Fi and get your books. Amazon says an internet connection is required to purchase, download, or sync Kindle books. Download the titles you expect to read before disconnecting. See Amazon’s Kindle content troubleshooting guidance.
- Wait for downloads and indexing to finish. Newly downloaded books may need to be indexed before they are ready for searching. Amazon notes that indexing after downloads affects battery life; its battery guidance does not quantify the effect of turning off Wi-Fi.
- Turn off Wi-Fi for your offline session. You can then read downloaded books without an internet connection. If a title is missing, reconnect and check that it has been downloaded to the device rather than only stored in your library.
What will not update until you reconnect
Purchases and downloads
You will need an internet connection to buy new Kindle books or download titles that are not already on the Paperwhite. Plan ahead if you expect to switch books while offline.

Reading position, notes, and highlights
Amazon’s Sync feature saves reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers and requires an internet connection. With Wi-Fi off, those updates cannot reach your account in real time. Reconnect and sync when you want to update linked devices.
Wi-Fi and the Sync setting are distinct controls. Amazon says Sync is enabled by default on Kindle devices and apps; on a Kindle e-reader, its setting is under More → Settings → Device Options. Turning off Wi-Fi is not the same as deliberately changing that setting.

Amazon warns that notes, highlights, or bookmarks created while Sync is turned off may be lost when Sync is turned on again. Its guidance also says that with Sync disabled, usage data is not automatically saved to Amazon’s servers, and features such as cross-device reading-position sharing and note export or sharing are unavailable. See Amazon’s Sync settings help page.

Can turning off Wi-Fi save battery?
Amazon recommends turning off the device’s internet connection when it is not in use as a battery-conservation step. It does not provide an estimate of how much battery this saves, so treat it as a supported tip rather than a guaranteed or measurable improvement. Amazon also notes that indexing downloaded books affects battery life. Its guidance is at Conserve Your Kindle E-Reader Battery.

When offline reading is a good fit
- Go offline: when the books you want are downloaded and you are comfortable postponing purchases and cloud updates.
- Stay connected: when you need to download a title, make reading progress available on another device promptly, or use features that depend on Sync.
Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation) safety and compliance information covers wireless and safety information for that model. It does not establish a reading-habit benefit from switching Wi-Fi off.
