What you need before connecting
A direct connection needs three things: an HDMI output on the computer, an HDMI input on the TV, and an HDMI cable. Check that both devices have the ports you expect before buying anything. If the computer does not have HDMI, identify its actual video output first; a USB-C-shaped port does not necessarily carry video.

Match the cable and any adapter to the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. The entire signal path must support that mode: computer output, adapter or dock, cable, and TV input. A more capable cable cannot add display features that the computer or TV does not support. Apple’s Mac HDMI connection guidance and Microsoft’s USB-C compatibility guidance explain relevant device and adapter limits.

Mac
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the attached display, and configure the available display options. Apple lists HDMI for Macs with a built-in HDMI port, USB-C-to-HDMI adapters for Thunderbolt 5, 4, or 3 and USB-C ports, and Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters or cables for older Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt, or Mini DisplayPort connections. Check the capabilities of your particular Mac and adapter in Apple’s HDMI connection instructions.

Chromebook
Open Settings > Device > Displays. To show the built-in display’s picture on the TV, select Mirror Built-in Display. Select the external display to adjust supported resolution and refresh rate. See Google’s Chromebook display instructions.
If the computer does not have an HDMI port
Identify the computer’s exact port and confirm in its specifications that it supports video output. A compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter may work with USB-C or Thunderbolt, but the computer port, adapter, and cable all need to support the display mode you want. USB-C connector shape alone is not proof that video output is available.

For a Mac with an older Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt connection, Apple also documents a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Check the specific computer and adapter specifications rather than assuming that an adapter with a matching connector will work.
For an ordinary connection, no dock, charging passthrough, or extra ports are needed. If a dock is already in the signal path, its compatibility and supported display modes matter too.

Fix common HDMI problems
The TV says “No signal”
- Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input the cable actually uses.
- Reseat both ends of the cable and any adapter.
- If you are using USB-C, verify that the specific computer port supports video output.
- Open the computer’s display settings and check whether it detects the TV. On Windows, use Settings > System > Display; Mac and Chromebook have display controls in their system settings.
- If a hub or dock is connected, check its compatibility and supported display modes. If practical, simplify the setup to determine whether the hub or adapter is involved.
Microsoft’s Windows display guidance and USB-C troubleshooting guidance provide further checks.

Choose the HDMI-connected TV as the sound output. In Windows, open Settings > System > Sound > Output and select the TV or HDMI device. Microsoft describes the audio controls in its sound troubleshooting instructions. On a Mac, open System Settings > Sound > Output and choose the HDMI device, as described by Apple. If the TV has no built-in speakers, use its connected audio system or another suitable output.

The picture is cropped at the edges
Look in the TV’s picture settings for a picture-size, screen-fit, aspect-ratio, overscan, or underscan option; names vary by TV. Apple recommends checking overscan or underscan settings on the TV or projector when available. See its display connection guidance.
The image is unstable or the resolution or refresh rate is missing
Check the specifications for every part of the connection: computer, adapter or dock, cable, and TV. A connector that fits does not guarantee support for every resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, or audio format. Apple directs users to check adapter specifications, while Microsoft notes that USB-C modes and cable compatibility can constrain what works.
Choose a cable or adapter that fits your setup
- Both devices have HDMI: use an HDMI cable rated for the display mode you intend to use.
- The computer has USB-C or Thunderbolt but no HDMI: use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter only after confirming the computer port supports video output and the adapter supports the target mode.
- The computer has Mini DisplayPort: a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable may suit compatible older Macs; verify the specific computer’s capabilities.
- You are considering a dock: it is optional for a basic TV connection. Check supported display modes if you need a dock for extra ports or multiple displays.
Do not assume a VGA or DVI adapter is interchangeable with HDMI. Compatibility, conversion direction, and audio support depend on the exact ports and equipment.
