A “Morse code keyboard” can mean either a tool that turns ordinary typing into Morse code or an input device that turns dots and dashes into text. The first is useful for viewing or hearing letter patterns; the second is for sending Morse to a computer, practicing, or using switch-access input. These are opposite directions of conversion, so check which one a tool supports before using it.
What does a Morse code keyboard do?
In a text-to-Morse tool, you type or select ordinary characters and the tool shows or plays their Morse equivalents. In a Morse-to-text keyboard, you enter timed short and long signals—dots and dashes—and software decodes them as characters. A physical switch-access device is another Morse-input design, often built around assistive switches rather than conventional keys.

Morse itself represents messages through short and long intervals. The Renesas Electronics Corporation application note describes it as “a scheme for sending messages using only short and long intervals, known respectively as dots and dashes.” Renesas AN-1161 documents one wireless prototype; it is not evidence that the design is a currently available retail keyboard.
Which kinds are available?
| Kind | Input and conversion | Output or connection | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser text-to-Morse tool | Type with a physical keyboard or click virtual keys; ordinary characters become Morse. | Displays Morse and may play it as sound. | Looking up patterns or learning how characters map to Morse. |
| Browser key simulator | Use timed presses and releases, such as a simulated key, to enter dots and dashes. | Decodes the signals as text. | Manual sending practice. |
| Physical Morse-input prototype | Press and release a momentary-on button to enter Morse signals. | In Renesas’ documented design, a Bluetooth module sends data to a computer application. | DIY Morse input to a computer. |
| Switch-access device | Use one or two assistive-technology switches to enter Morse. | The MorseKey project says its device presents to the host as a standard USB keyboard and mouse. | AAC and switch-access use. |
The browser tool described by Morse Code Creator provides both character-to-Morse and key-simulator modes. They are separate functions: seeing the Morse for text does not mean the tool is decoding your key presses, and a simulator’s decoding mode does not necessarily provide a text-to-Morse display.

Can you use an ordinary keyboard or the Spacebar?
For a browser character-to-Morse tool, yes: type with your regular keyboard, or click the onscreen keys, to convert characters into code. A key simulator works in the other direction. It interprets the duration of a press and release as a dot or dash; the Spacebar may be used as the simulated key, depending on the tool.
A Spacebar simulator is a software input, not a physical telegraph key. Its behavior depends on the particular tool’s controls and timing rules. Do not assume that every browser simulator, computer interface, or hardware key treats a press identically.

What hardware do you need for physical Morse input?
You do not need special hardware to use a browser tool for text-to-Morse conversion. For manually sending Morse to a computer, the right equipment depends on how you want to send and what the receiving interface expects.

- Momentary pushbutton: Renesas AN-1161 specifies a momentary-on button for its DIY wireless prototype and names an E-Switch KS-01Q-02 as an example component. That is a part for a build, not a complete off-the-shelf Morse keyboard.
- Straight key: A key operated directly by the sender. Check that the computer interface and software accept the key’s contact behavior.
- Paddle: A different sending arrangement from a straight key. The interface may need to support the paddle’s separate signals; compatibility depends on the hardware and software combination.
- Assistive switch: A one- or two-switch arrangement may support Morse-based access. The MorseKey project describes a particular USB keyboard-and-mouse device for AAC and switch access; its stated behavior should not be assumed of every Morse device.
For physical practice, confirm whether the interface expects a straight-key contact or separate paddle signals, and verify that the software can use that input. The equipment guide from Morse Code Creator discusses these equipment categories and the compatibility distinction.

What WPM should you use for practice?
There is no universal practice speed established by the evidence available here. Choose a pace that lets you form and distinguish signals reliably, then adjust it to your goal and the controls of the tool you are using.
A 2018 pilot study, “Enabling Input on Tiny/Headless Systems Using Morse Code,” reported average entry speeds of 5.0, 5.9, and 6.7 words per minute over three sessions, with an overall average error rate of 1.7%. The study involved two experienced smartphone users with no prior Morse experience, and the authors reported descriptive statistics because the sample was only two people. These figures describe that small pilot, not a typical expected speed or proof that Morse input is faster or more accurate than a standard keyboard. Read the pilot study.
