Use the Windows TextInput Policy CSP setting ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/TextInput/AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions in an Intune Windows custom profile. Enter the integer 0 to block suggestions generated while typing with a physical keyboard, or 1 to allow them. Microsoft defines 1 as the default. This is a device-scoped policy, so the profile applies to the managed Windows device rather than to one user account.
What the Intune policy controls
AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions controls text suggestions for input from a physical, hardware keyboard. It is the appropriate node when an organization wants to manage suggestions while a user types on a laptop keyboard, desktop keyboard, docked keyboard, or other attached hardware keyboard.

This setting is different from AllowKeyboardTextSuggestions. Microsoft describes the latter as controlling text prediction for the on-screen keyboard, touch keyboard, and handwriting recognition tool. Selecting that broader node will not reliably satisfy a requirement that specifically concerns a physical keyboard. Configure the hardware-keyboard node instead.

Supported Windows editions and scope
Microsoft lists this policy for Windows 10 version 1803 (build 10.0.17134) and later. The supported editions in the policy table are Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise LTSC.
| Requirement | Supported value |
|---|---|
| Minimum Windows release | Windows 10 version 1803, 10.0.17134 |
| Later releases | Windows 10 and later versions listed by Microsoft for the node |
| Editions | Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, IoT Enterprise LTSC |
| Policy scope | Device |
| Intune profile type | Windows 10 and later custom profile |
| OMA-URI data type | Integer |
Use the device path exactly as shown. A path beginning with ./Device/ is not interchangeable with a user-scoped path beginning with ./User/. Intune delivers the OMA-URI, and Windows applies it through the Policy CSP on the device.
Microsoft notes that some settings in the overall TextInput CSP can be under development. Before assigning this policy broadly, verify that the specific node behaves as expected on the Windows builds, editions, and language or input configurations used by your organization.

Create the custom profile in Intune
The following procedure uses the Microsoft Intune admin center and the Windows custom-profile OMA-URI editor.
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center and start the workflow to create a new device configuration profile.
- For the platform, choose Windows 10 and later.
- For the profile type, choose Templates, then select Custom when the available profile choices are displayed.
- Give the profile a name that identifies both the input method and the intended state, such as
Hardware keyboard suggestions - blocked. Add a description that records the reason for the policy and the target device group. - In the custom profile’s configuration settings, add an OMA-URI setting.
- Paste this case-sensitive URI into the OMA-URI field:
./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/TextInput/AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions. - Set Data type to Integer.
- Enter
0when the requirement is Not allowed, or1when the requirement is Allowed. - Complete the profile wizard and assign the profile to the device group that should receive the policy.
- Use Intune’s device and profile monitoring views to confirm that the assignment reaches representative devices before expanding it.
Do not add quotation marks around the URI, and do not change the capitalization of any segment. The value must be an integer; entering the words true, false, 0 as a string, or 1 as a string can cause a validation or policy-application failure.
Choose the correct value for your requirement
| Goal | Value to deploy | Result | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow suggestions | 1 |
Suggestions remain enabled for physical-keyboard input. | Users benefit from predictive typing and the organization has no requirement to suppress it. |
| Block suggestions | 0 |
Suggestions are disabled for physical-keyboard input. | Privacy, distraction-reduction, examination, kiosk, or controlled-input requirements call for suppression. |
The policy is enforced at device scope, while a local Settings choice is a user-facing preference. Treat the Intune value as the administrative source of control for managed devices; do not assume that changing a local text-input option will override a device policy.

How the setting reaches Windows
Intune is the delivery mechanism, not a separate text-prediction engine. After assignment, the MDM client sends the OMA-URI and integer to the Windows device. Windows stores and evaluates the value through the Policy CSP, which then controls the hardware-keyboard suggestion behavior.

Verify that the policy works
Check Intune assignment
- Confirm that the device is a member of the group receiving the profile.
- Check the profile’s per-device status for a successful installation rather than relying only on the aggregate assignment count.
- Allow the device to synchronize with Intune, then refresh the status after the sync has completed.
Check the Windows event log
On the client, open Event Viewer and inspect Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider > Admin. Look for entries at the time of the sync. Microsoft identifies malformed OMA-URI syntax and policy-application errors as common causes when a custom profile does not apply.

Perform a functional test
Sign in with a test account and type with a physical keyboard in a text field that supports hardware-keyboard input. With value 0, the hardware-keyboard suggestions should be suppressed; with value 1, they should remain available. Test more than one application if the organization relies on a particular editor, browser, or line-of-business program, because an application’s own input behavior can affect what the user sees.
Troubleshoot common failures
The profile is not assigned to the device
Review group membership, assignment filters, exclusions, and enrollment status. A user being in a group does not help when the profile is assigned to a device group and the intended device is not a member. Resolve the targeting issue, force or wait for an MDM sync, and then recheck the per-device status.
The custom profile reports an error
Compare the OMA-URI character by character with the required path. The path is case-sensitive, must begin with ./Device/, and must use the TextInput and AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions segments exactly. Confirm that the data type is Integer and that the value is only 0 or 1.

The profile succeeds but suggestions still appear
- Confirm that you configured
AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions, notAllowKeyboardTextSuggestions, which targets on-screen, touch, and handwriting input. - Verify the Windows edition and build meet the support table for this node.
- Check the DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider Admin log for a policy conflict or application error.
- Test in a second text field and with another application to separate Windows policy behavior from application-specific suggestions.
- Confirm that the test uses a physical keyboard. Results from a touch keyboard or handwriting surface do not validate this hardware-keyboard policy.
Behavior differs between devices
Compare Windows build, edition, language, input method, and application. Microsoft cautions that portions of the CSP may be under development, so a setting that works on one supported build should still be validated on every build included in a broad deployment. Record the exact build and input configuration for any device that behaves differently.
Plan a controlled rollout
- Select a pilot group containing the Windows editions and builds used in production.
- Include different language and input configurations, plus the applications in which users most often type.
- Deploy either the allow or block value to the pilot and verify both Intune status and actual typing behavior.
- Review event logs for parsing or application errors and correct the profile before expanding it.
- Assign the profile to additional device groups in stages, retaining a small test group for future Windows updates.
This staged approach is especially useful because the policy is device-scoped: every user of an assigned device receives the same administrative setting. It also avoids confusing a successful MDM delivery with proof that every application renders suggestions identically.
Changing or removing the policy
To change the behavior, edit the custom profile’s integer or deploy a replacement profile with the required value, while checking for overlapping assignments. The CSP supports Replace, so a new value can supersede the existing one when the device receives it.
Recommended Free Tools
The CSP also supports Delete. If you remove the OMA-URI setting or retire the profile, verify the resulting state on a test device rather than assuming that every Windows build immediately returns to the same local preference. Document whether the organization intends to leave suggestions at the Windows default or to keep an explicit allow value in place.
Allow versus block: an administrative decision
| Consideration | Allow (1) |
Block (0) |
|---|---|---|
| User experience | Predictive suggestions remain visible while typing with a physical keyboard. | Those suggestions are suppressed. |
| Administrative scope | One device policy governs all users of assigned devices. | The same device-wide enforcement applies, with suggestions disabled. |
| Local settings | A user’s preference is not the authoritative control when the device policy is assigned. | A user’s preference is not the authoritative control when the device policy is assigned. |
| Configuration value | Integer 1. |
Integer 0. |
Use the hardware-keyboard node when the requirement is specifically about physical typing. Use a different, separately evaluated policy only when the requirement concerns the touch keyboard, on-screen keyboard, or handwriting recognition tool.
