If Conan Exiles keeps reverting your server settings, stop the server before editing ServerSettings.ini. A running server can hold its configuration in memory and write that state back to disk when it shuts down, replacing your manual edits. The dependable sequence is: stop completely, back up the file, edit the correct configuration, start the server, and verify the result in the administrator panel.

Why Conan Exiles settings revert
Configuration changes usually disappear for one of four reasons. The first is the most common explanation in 2026 server-setting guides: the running process is treated as authoritative. When the process shuts down, it may serialize its in-memory values to ServerSettings.ini. An edit made while the process is active can therefore be overwritten by the older values already loaded in memory.

There is no Funcom patch note or canonical Funcom configuration reference identified for this saving problem. Community reports are useful for diagnosis, but they should not be treated as an official fix.

Use the stop-edit-restart procedure
Follow this order even if you have already changed the file. It prevents the server from writing stale memory back over your work.
- Stop the server completely. Use the host control panel’s stop command and wait until the process is reported as stopped. Do not edit during a restart or while the control panel still shows the instance as running.
- Make a backup. Download or copy the current configuration before changing it. Keep the original with a date in its filename so you can restore it if an update or an edit removes settings.
- Open the correct file. On the commonly reported Windows server layout, use
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. A Linux-native build is reported to useLinuxServerinstead ofWindowsServer. If your host exposes both directories, use the one belonging to the executable and platform you actually run. - Edit plain INI syntax. Put exactly one setting on each line in the form
key=value. Do not put several assignments on one space-separated line. Preserve the key’s spelling and avoid adding prose to the line. - Save, then keep a second backup. Updates can reset or reshuffle configuration files. Saving a copy immediately after a successful edit gives you a known-good version for comparison.
- Start the server. Allow the startup to finish before testing. A rapid stop-start cycle can leave you checking a file before the process has completed its write.
- Check in game. Log in with administrator privileges and inspect the administrator panel. Treat the value shown there as the practical confirmation that the running server accepted the change.
For syntax, a line such as StarvationTimeInMinutes=60 illustrates the required format only; the number is an example, not a universal recommendation. The important points are one assignment per line and the exact key name used by your build.

ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ServerSettings.iniUse the host’s file manager or FTP access to reach the directory. A path copied from a different operating system, a test instance, or an old installation can look perfectly valid while having no effect on the live server. Before editing, compare the file’s location with the instance you stop and start in the control panel.
Do not assume that seeing a changed timestamp proves the game loaded the file. The process may rewrite the file during shutdown, and a host may maintain separate directories for different server builds. The administrator panel after a clean restart is the meaningful test.

Check every key for silent failure
INI parsing problems are particularly confusing because a bad key may not produce a visible error. A typo can remain in the file while the game quietly falls back to its default. Compare each name character by character with documentation for the exact Conan Exiles build you run. Do not “correct” an unusual spelling solely because it looks wrong: the Fandom Server Configuration wiki reportedly notes that some keys have historically carried misspellings and may work only under the misspelled name until a patch changes them.
The StarvationTimeInMinutes exception
The same wiki reportedly lists StarvationTimeInMinutes as a setting that does not save properly through Server Settings. That is a warning about this individual option, not proof that every setting is broken. If this value alone reverts while unrelated options persist, record the behavior, test after a stop-edit-restart cycle, and check current Funcom community reports for your version rather than repeatedly rewriting the file.

One assignment per line
A Funcom forum user reported that a setting written on one line with space-separated values did not stick. Use this pattern:
SettingA=ValueA
SettingB=ValueBDo not combine them as SettingA=ValueA SettingB=ValueB. Keep the file as plain text and avoid copying formatting from a web page that inserts smart punctuation or hidden characters.
Move settings that belong in Engine.ini
Not every server variable is a ServerSettings.ini option. One guide specifically identifies building-decay console variables as settings that belong in Engine.ini. If a documented variable is described as an engine console variable, placing it in ServerSettings.ini may be silently ignored even when the spelling is correct.
Use the same safety sequence for Engine.ini: stop the server, back up the file, make the smallest possible edit, restart, and verify in game. Do not move ordinary gameplay settings into Engine.ini merely because a line failed; first confirm which file the setting’s documentation names.

Diagnose a value that still will not apply
After one controlled restart, use the symptom rather than making many simultaneous edits. Changing several lines at once makes it impossible to identify which one failed.

A user report on the Funcom forum says that repeating the restart resolved a non-saving change. That is a low-confidence community observation, not a guarantee; repeat the cycle only after confirming the path and syntax so you do not overwrite a correct backup unnecessarily.

Player-cap reports conflict
Do not use player-cap numbers as a test of whether your configuration system works. Secondary sources disagree: one says values in ServerSettings.ini silently stop at 40 and that higher limits belong in Engine.ini; another reports a default of 70 and modded limits above 200. Neither figure is established by an official Funcom source in the available material.
If your question is specifically about the cap, identify your platform, server build, and current documentation first. Test one value at a time and verify the effective limit in the running server. Treat 40, 70, and 200-plus as conflicting claims, not guaranteed defaults or supported ceilings.
Enhanced (UE5) servers need separate confirmation
Guidance for the Enhanced build is unresolved. One hosting guide says the legacy ServerSettings.ini was removed and ignored in the Enhanced update it dates to early May 2026. Another says settings carry over without manual migration. The release timing and both configuration claims are low-confidence secondary reports, and no Funcom patch note confirming either behavior was identified.
Before changing an Enhanced server, establish which build is running in the host panel. Then make a backup, inspect the configuration directories generated for that build, and change one setting using the stop-edit-restart procedure. If the administrator panel does not reflect the value, do not assume the legacy file is still authoritative; check current Funcom forum discussions or host documentation for that specific Enhanced version.

Keep at least two copies: the file from before an edit and the file after a restart that you have verified in game. Label them with the date and server instance. Updates may reset or reorder settings, so a backup lets you compare what changed without guessing.
If a restart has overwritten your work, stop the server, restore the last known-good copy, and start once to confirm that the expected values return. Then reapply only one change, using the exact path and syntax above. A clean, single-variable test is safer than pasting an entire old file into a newer build, especially when key names or supported options may have changed.
When to seek a build-specific answer
Escalate to current Funcom forum discussions or your host’s support when all of these are true: the server is fully stopped before editing, the path matches the running platform, each line uses valid key=value syntax, the option is documented for the correct file, and the administrator panel still rejects it after a clean restart. Include the server edition, platform, exact key, the file path, and the before-and-after values. Do not include passwords or other credentials.
The practical rule remains narrow and reliable: prevent the running process from overwriting your edit, use the correct configuration file and syntax, and verify the effective value through the administrator panel. Treat special cases—misspelled legacy keys, player-cap limits, and Enhanced configuration—as version-dependent until a current official statement resolves them.
