For most Linux VPS deployments running Docker, use restic for encrypted off-host snapshots, Borg with Borgmatic for configuration-driven backups and database-dump orchestration, or Duplicati if you need a web interface. Whichever you choose, back up the deployment configuration, all persistent volumes and bind mounts, and application-consistent database exports. Store at least one copy outside the VPS, then test restoring it on a clean host.

What a complete Docker backup needs to include

A container image is not a complete backup of a running service. A recoverable deployment also depends on the configuration that recreates it and the persistent data that the container uses. Docker volumes live outside a container’s lifecycle and are intended for persistent application data, so removing or replacing a container does not make its volume contents disposable.

Make an inventory for every service in the Compose project or other deployment definition. Record where its configuration lives, which host paths or volumes it mounts, whether it uses a database, and what credentials or secrets are required to restore it. The inventory is the map that ties together files, database exports, and the services that consume them.

Deployment and host configuration

  • Save the Compose files or other definitions needed to recreate containers, networks, and mounts.
  • Back up environment files and secret material required for reconstruction. Treat credentials as sensitive: a backup repository and its access credentials need protection too.
  • Include host-level scripts, systemd timers, or other mechanisms that run backup jobs. These are part of the recovery process even though they are not container data.

Persistent data

  • Back up every named Docker volume that contains persistent data.
  • Back up every bind-mounted directory on the VPS. A bind mount is a host path, so it must be included explicitly in the backup sources rather than assumed to be covered by a volume backup.
  • Check the actual mounts used by each service against your inventory. A backup of a Compose file without its mounted data can recreate an empty service rather than restore the original one.

Application-consistent database exports

Include database exports made with the database’s supported dump process, such as pg_dump for PostgreSQL or mysqldump for MySQL, or use the application’s documented export. Alternatively, use a controlled stop or snapshot procedure appropriate to the application. A copy of a live database directory should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a clean, restorable backup.

Coordinate database exports with the file backup. The goal is for the exported data and the configuration being restored to describe the same application state. Keep the necessary credentials and restore commands in a protected runbook so a recovery does not depend on someone remembering undocumented steps.

Docker backup tools compared

Option Best fit Relevant strengths Important trade-offs
restic A headless VPS where encrypted, deduplicated off-host snapshots and scripting are priorities. Supports local repositories, SFTP, REST, Amazon S3, S3-compatible storage, Backblaze B2, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, and other rclone-backed targets. Database exports and application quiescing need to be handled through a wrapper, hooks, or a coordinated backup procedure.
Borg with Borgmatic Operators who want declarative job configuration and database-dump orchestration. Borg is a deduplicating archiver; Borgmatic adds configuration-driven jobs and database-dump hooks. BorgBase’s Docker guidance demonstrates source directories for Compose data and Docker volumes, alongside PostgreSQL and MySQL dump configuration. Active containers and databases still need consistency techniques; blindly copying live files is not a safe substitute.
Duplicati A deployment where a web-oriented backup workflow is valuable. Provides a web interface and publishes Docker images. Its configuration and data under /data must be included in the recovery plan. Protect the encryption key and service credentials; retaining its local database helps normal operation and diagnosis.
Docker-native tar export A building block or emergency migration technique. Docker documents using a temporary container, --volumes-from, and tar to export and restore volume data. By itself it does not provide retention, encryption, off-site replication, scheduling, repository verification, or database consistency.

How to choose among restic, Borgmatic, and Duplicati

The right choice depends less on the fact that the application runs in Docker than on how you operate the VPS: whether you prefer command-line jobs or a browser interface, how database exports fit into the backup workflow, where the repository will live, and how much recovery configuration you are prepared to maintain.

Choose restic for a scriptable, off-host snapshot workflow

Restic is a strong default for a headless VPS when you want encrypted, deduplicated snapshots and a choice of remote repository backends. It can send a repository to a separate host or to supported object-storage services, rather than leaving the only copy on the server that may fail. It is not, on its own, the whole application-consistency plan: arrange database dumps and any required pause or quiescing through a wrapper or hooks.

Choose Borg with Borgmatic for explicit configuration and dump hooks

Borg is a deduplicating archiver. Borgmatic adds declarative configuration and database-dump hooks, making the combination useful when you want the backup job and its database-export behavior expressed as configuration. Borg’s guidance cautions against blindly copying active container and database files; it advises dumping databases or stopping database servers. This option suits operators comfortable maintaining a configured backup workflow and its repository.

Choose Duplicati when a web interface matters

Duplicati’s web-oriented workflow can be useful if browser-based administration is an important requirement. Its own state must be considered part of recovery: the Docker guide places persistent configuration and data under /data, and the encryption key and service credentials must be recoverable. Duplicati documents its local database as a compact view of remote backup data that can be rebuilt from the remote files. Keeping that database is still useful for normal operation and diagnostics.

Use tar export as a component, not as a complete backup system

A temporary container with --volumes-from and tar can move volume contents or help with an emergency migration. That technique can be useful within a larger process, but it does not supply the retention, encryption, scheduling, off-site copy, verification, or application-consistency controls expected from an ongoing backup plan.

Plan for consistency before scheduling jobs

Backups taken while applications are writing data can capture mismatched states. For a database, a raw copy of its active data directory is not automatically a clean export. Use a supported dump, the application’s documented export, or a controlled stop or snapshot procedure. Borg’s official guidance puts the central rule plainly: “Dump databases or stop the database servers.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coordinate the database and file portions rather than treating them as unrelated jobs. For example, a database export and the uploaded application configuration should correspond to a compatible point in the service’s operation. Decide how each service will be handled while the export runs, and document any quiescing or stop procedure. If a job can run while users are writing data, establish how the backup avoids combining an export from one state with files from another.

Borg’s guidance also notes that Docker’s save command may help with containers. That is not a replacement for persistent-data and database backups: container recreation, mounted application data, and database consistency are distinct recovery needs. The key question is not merely whether a container artifact exists, but whether the full service can be reconstructed and its data brought back coherently.

Set up an off-host backup workflow

A small single-VPS deployment can schedule restic or Borgmatic to a separate host or object-storage bucket. Keep the repository in a different failure domain from the VPS: if the server and its attached storage are lost together, a backup stored only there will not help. Restrict repository credentials to the minimum operations needed for the job, and protect any encryption key or credentials needed during recovery.

  1. Inventory the deployment. List every service, its Compose or equivalent definition, environment and secret material, persistent named volumes, bind-mounted paths, database, and host-side backup scripts or timers.
  2. Choose a consistency method for each database. Select the supported database dump, application export, or controlled stop/snapshot procedure. Record where the export is written and which credentials are needed to create and restore it.
  3. Choose the backup tool and destination. Match the workflow to your operating preference: restic for scriptable snapshots and broad backend support, Borgmatic for declarative jobs and dump hooks, or Duplicati for a web interface. Put the repository off-host.
  4. Include every recovery dependency. Configure the job to cover deployment files, secrets needed for reconstruction, persistent mounts, database exports, and host-level job configuration. If using Duplicati in Docker, include its persistent /data directory in the recovery plan.
  5. Protect access details. Store repository access credentials, encryption keys, database credentials, and restore commands in a protected runbook or other secure recovery location. A backup that cannot be decrypted or accessed during an outage is not usable.
  6. Schedule and observe the job. Use the VPS’s chosen scheduler or backup-tool workflow, and make sure failures are visible to whoever is responsible for recovery. A timer or successful-looking setup is not a substitute for checking job results.
  7. Perform a restore drill. Restore into an isolated directory or clean host, follow the recovery sequence below, and note elapsed time and manual steps. Revise the runbook when the drill exposes missing files, credentials, or assumptions.

Restore Docker services after a VPS failure

Recover in dependency order: first the host-level prerequisites and protected configuration, then the network and service definitions, then persistent files and database contents, and finally the services that use them. Test in an isolated location or on a clean host before relying on the backup as a production recovery path.

  1. Prepare a clean host or isolated restore location. Make sure you can reach the off-host repository and have the credentials and keys required to read it. Avoid overwriting the only remaining copy of a service’s data during a test.
  2. Restore the deployment definition and host configuration. Retrieve the Compose files or other definitions, required environment and secret material, and any host scripts or timers that are needed to recreate the service.
  3. Recreate the Docker network and definitions. Restore the network and deployment structure expected by the services before starting them. Check that mount paths and volume names in the restored definitions match the data you are restoring.
  4. Restore named volumes and bind-mounted directories. Put each data set back at the path or volume expected by its service. A successful file restore to the wrong mount location can still leave the container looking like it has empty data.
  5. Restore database contents from the export. Use the saved restore procedure and credentials for the relevant database or application. Do not assume that restoring the database’s live files is the same as importing a supported dump.
  6. Start services in dependency order. Bring up the components their dependents require before starting dependent applications. Use the deployment definitions and runbook to determine the intended order.
  7. Verify the application, not just the containers. Check logs, sign in through the application, and inspect representative records or files. A container that starts successfully does not prove that the correct volume or database was restored.
  8. Record the result. Write down elapsed recovery time, manual steps, errors, and any missing dependencies. Update the runbook so the next recovery does not depend on what the operator remembers from the drill.

Common backup failures and what to check

  • The container returns but the application appears empty: compare the restored mount paths and volume names with the deployment definition. The configuration may have been restored without the persistent data, or the data may have gone to a different path.
  • The database export is missing or unusable: confirm the backup workflow actually ran the database dump or documented export, and that its credentials and restore procedure are recorded. Do not substitute an unverified copy of an active data directory.
  • Files and database contents disagree: review whether the file backup and database export represent compatible application states. Coordinate the operations or use a controlled stop/snapshot procedure.
  • The repository is unavailable after a server loss: check whether it was stored off-host and in a separate failure domain, and whether its access credentials and encryption key can be recovered.
  • A Duplicati recovery lacks its own settings: ensure the /data directory, encryption key, and service credentials are covered by the recovery plan. Its local database can be rebuilt from remote backup files, but preserving it helps routine use and diagnosis.
  • A tar export exists but recovery remains manual: tar moves volume contents; it does not by itself supply scheduling, retention, encryption, off-site replication, repository verification, or database consistency. Add those controls to the broader process.
  • The scheduled job reports success but nobody knows if recovery works: restore to a clean host or isolated directory and verify representative application data. A backup job’s status alone does not establish recoverability.

Build a recovery runbook that someone else can follow

A useful runbook describes the actual recovery path rather than simply naming the backup tool. Keep it protected because it may contain or point to sensitive material. Include the location of deployment files and secrets, the volume-to-service map, database dump and import procedures, repository access details, and the order for bringing services back.

For each service, record the backup sources, how database consistency is achieved, and how to recognize a correct restore. Include checks that are meaningful to the application, such as a successful login and the presence of representative records or files. After each restore drill, add any manual step that proved necessary and remove instructions that no longer match the deployment.

BorgBase’s Docker guidance captures the operational point: “As with every backup, it’s generally a good idea to run a backup and test restoring it.” A completed job is only one part of the evidence; a tested recovery path demonstrates whether configuration, data, credentials, and procedure fit together.
