A safe MySQL recovery starts with preservation, not a repair command. Take and verify a backup or snapshot, identify the table’s storage engine, run a normal consistency check, and then choose an engine-specific recovery path. REPAIR TABLE and mysqlcheck --repair can repair MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables; they do not repair InnoDB. InnoDB recovery normally means starting with the least aggressive emergency setting that permits startup, extracting data with a logical dump, and rebuilding or restoring into a clean instance.

What to do before touching the damaged table
Stop and preserve the evidence before running any repair. MySQL’s documentation warns that repair operations can cause data loss, so an untested backup is not enough: make a copy, snapshot, or backup that you can actually restore, and keep the original instance unchanged whenever possible.

Note the database and table names, MySQL server version, storage engine, the exact error text, when the problem began, and whether the server is crashing or merely returning incorrect results.
- Make a recovery copy. Use a tested backup, storage snapshot, or a clone of the data directory according to your backup procedure. Perform destructive work on the clone whenever your storage and outage window allow it.
- Keep the server stable. Schedule checks during a controlled maintenance window. A damaged InnoDB page can make the server exit, and concurrent writes can make an offline file-level check report misleading corruption.
Oracle MySQL’s mysqlcheck documentation says: “It is best to make a backup of a table before performing a table repair operation; under some circumstances the operation might cause data loss.”
How to confirm corruption and identify the storage engine
Do not select a repair command from the error message alone. First run a normal table check, then determine whether the table is MyISAM, ARCHIVE, CSV, or InnoDB. The engine decides which operations are valid.

Run a normal check
CHECK TABLE `db_name`.`table_name`;
The result reports a status such as OK or gives an error describing a damaged index, unreadable data, or another consistency problem. Save the complete result rather than only the final line.
The command-line equivalent is:
mysqlcheck --check db_name table_name
For a database-wide check, name the database without an individual table. To check every database, use:
mysqlcheck --all-databases
A normal check should come first. If it does not explain a read or update failure, an extended check can provide additional diagnostics, but MySQL documents EXTENDED as slower and intended as a follow-up rather than the default operation.
CHECK TABLE `db_name`.`table_name` EXTENDED;
Read the engine before choosing a repair
You can see the engine in a table-status result:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `db_name` LIKE 'table_name';
Look for the Engine column. You can also query the data dictionary:
SELECT TABLE_SCHEMA, TABLE_NAME, ENGINE
FROM information_schema.TABLES
WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'db_name'
AND TABLE_NAME = 'table_name';
Record the engine alongside the check output. A command that is appropriate for MyISAM is not a general-purpose MySQL repair command.
Choose the recovery path by engine and server state
| Storage engine | Is mysqld running? |
Supported first-line action | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| MyISAM | Yes, if the table can be checked safely | REPAIR TABLE or mysqlcheck --repair |
Recheck the table and verify row counts and application behavior; repairs can lose data. |
| ARCHIVE | Yes | REPAIR TABLE or mysqlcheck --repair |
Use the same documented repair family, then validate the result. |
| CSV | Yes | REPAIR TABLE or mysqlcheck --repair |
Confirm that the repaired table is readable and matches the backup or expected records. |
| InnoDB | Running or failing during a check | Emergency startup, logical extraction, rebuild, or restore | REPAIR TABLE is not an InnoDB repair tool. Preserve the original and work toward a clean instance. |
Oracle MySQL states: “The REPAIR TABLE method is only applicable to MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables.” Treat that limitation as a hard boundary, not a suggestion.

Repairing MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables
Use SQL while the server is available
For a supported engine, run the repair against the fully qualified table name:
REPAIR TABLE `db_name`.`table_name`;
The client utility performs the same class of maintenance:
mysqlcheck --repair db_name table_name
Run only one repair path at a time. Keep the pre-repair copy so that you can compare results or return to the previous state if the operation removes unrecoverable rows.
Recheck and validate the result
A successful command is not the same as a successful recovery. After the repair:
- Run
CHECK TABLEagain and save the output. - Compare row counts with the last known-good backup or an application-level record count. A changed count is a data-integrity event, even when the check reports
OK. - Exercise the reads and writes that previously failed, including the indexes or ranges named in the original error.
- Ask the application owner to verify critical records and workflows before reopening normal traffic.
If the second check still reports errors, stop repeating repair attempts. Repeated writes to a damaged structure can make later extraction harder; move to a clean restore or a specialist recovery plan.
Using myisamchk safely when the server is stopped
myisamchk works directly on MyISAM table files and is useful when the server cannot be used for a SQL-level check. It is an offline tool: mysqld must not be changing the table while you inspect or repair it.

myisamchk --check path/to/table.MYI
myisamchk --recover path/to/table.MYI
Replace the file path with the actual MyISAM index file on the stopped server or a clone. Confirm the service is stopped, prevent an automatic restart during the operation, and take a file-level copy first. After the operation, start MySQL, run CHECK TABLE through SQL, and perform the same row-count and application checks used for an online repair.
Running myisamchk while mysqld is updating the table can produce a corruption warning even when the table is not corrupt. If you cannot guarantee exclusive access, do not use the offline command; use a controlled SQL check or restore a copy to an isolated instance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why InnoDB cannot be fixed with REPAIR TABLE
InnoDB has a different recovery model. A failed CHECK TABLE, an InnoDB error during startup, or a server exit caused by a corrupt page is not a signal to run REPAIR TABLE. That statement does not repair InnoDB tables and may simply return an unsupported-engine result.
When a check indicates InnoDB corruption or causes InnoDB to fail, Oracle MySQL directs administrators to its “Forcing InnoDB Recovery” procedure. The objective is to start the server in the least aggressive recovery mode that works, extract the data, and then remove the emergency setting.
Start with the least aggressive emergency setting
- Stop normal application traffic and preserve the original data directory or volume.
- Add an
innodb_force_recoverysetting in the server’s[mysqld]configuration, beginning with the lowest nonzero level supported by your MySQL release. Do not jump to a higher level unless the server still cannot start. - Start the server and inspect the error log. Treat a server that starts in this mode as an extraction environment, not a repaired production server.
- Do not make normal writes while forced recovery is enabled. Work from a clone when possible.
The setting can allow startup by bypassing progressively more recovery work, but it does not heal damaged pages. Higher levels can make more data readable while increasing the restrictions and risk, so increase it only one step at a time and document every change.
Extract a logical dump

mysqldump db_name table_name > dump.sql
If a table-level dump succeeds, repeat for the remaining tables needed by the application. If a whole-database dump stops at one damaged table, isolate the failing object and continue extracting unaffected tables; record what could not be read instead of silently treating the dump as complete.
Build a clean destination
Create a separate clean MySQL instance, create the required database, and load the dump:
mysql clean_db < dump.sql
Recreate users, permissions, scheduled jobs, and application configuration through your normal change process. Then validate schema objects, row counts, representative queries, and critical business records on the clean instance.
Remove emergency mode and decide whether to cut over
After extraction, stop the emergency instance, remove innodb_force_recovery from the configuration, and restart only when you have decided whether the original data directory is safe to retain for evidence or discard. Do not return a forced-recovery server to ordinary writes.
Recommended Free Tools
If the rebuilt instance passes validation, schedule a controlled cutover. If the dump cannot complete, the server repeatedly crashes, or the rebuilt data is incomplete, stop experimenting on the original and restore a known-good backup to a separate instance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When restoring a backup is safer than repairing in place
Restoration is the preferred route when the structure remains inconsistent after repair, the server is unstable, extraction cannot finish, or the backup is more trustworthy than the live files. Restore into an isolated instance first, not over the only copy.
Best Value
| Situation | Preferred action | Likely data-loss boundary | Validation requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported non-InnoDB table, one failed check, recent verified backup | Clone, then attempt the documented repair | Rows that the repair cannot reconstruct | Second check, row-count comparison, application tests |
| InnoDB corruption but server can start in emergency mode | Dump readable data and rebuild in a clean instance | Unreadable pages or tables that cannot be dumped | Schema, counts, critical-record and workflow checks |
| Repeated crashes or incomplete extraction | Restore the newest known-good backup to a separate instance | Changes made after that backup | Backup-restore test, consistency checks, application acceptance |
| No trustworthy backup and severe physical or filesystem errors | Preserve the original and escalate to specialist recovery | Unknown until extraction succeeds | Independent copy and forensic documentation before further writes |
Calculate the recovery point explicitly: identify the timestamp of the backup, the transactions or imports completed afterward, and which records must be re-entered or reconciled. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Validation checklist after any repair or rebuild
- Run
CHECK TABLEon every repaired table and retain the output. - Compare row counts with a known-good copy, allowing for documented changes made during the incident.
- Check primary-key ranges, recent inserts, and representative records selected by the application owner.
- Run the queries that originally failed and the writes that exercise affected indexes.
- Review the MySQL error log for new storage, checksum, or crash messages.
- Confirm that the clean instance has the expected schema, character sets, triggers, routines, and permissions.
- Keep the original copy and incident notes until the restored or rebuilt system has passed an agreed observation period.
Common symptoms and the correct response
“CHECK TABLE says OK, but the application still fails”
Preserve the output and reproduce the exact failing query. A normal check may not explain every logical or application-level problem. Run the slower EXTENDED check only after the normal check, then compare the query plan, indexes, and application assumptions. Do not run a repair blindly when the database reports no structural error.
“mysqlcheck –repair says the table is not repairable”
Read the engine first. The command is not an InnoDB repair utility. For InnoDB, return to the emergency-start, dump, rebuild, or restore path; for an unsupported engine, use the engine’s documented maintenance procedure rather than forcing this command.
“The server crashes as soon as InnoDB opens the table”
Stop repeated restarts, preserve the data directory, and use the lowest emergency recovery setting that permits startup. Extract readable tables to SQL and rebuild elsewhere. If startup remains impossible or extraction is incomplete, restore a known-good backup in isolation.
“myisamchk reports corruption while MySQL is online”
Assume the result is unreliable until exclusive access is guaranteed. Stop mysqld cleanly, disable automatic restarts, preserve a copy, and rerun the check offline. Concurrent updates can create a warning even when the underlying table is sound.
“The repair completed, but records are missing”
Treat the repaired table as a data-loss event. Compare it with the pre-repair copy and the latest backup, identify the missing key ranges, and restore or re-import from the cleanest source. Do not overwrite your only backup with the repaired files.
Find and remove the cause after service is restored
Repairing a table does not explain why it became corrupt. Review the incident for abrupt shutdowns, storage or filesystem errors, failing hardware, and any event that interrupted writes. Correlate MySQL and operating-system logs with the first reported error, and test the storage path before trusting the same server with the rebuilt data.
Turn the recovery lessons into operating controls:
- Maintain automated backups and snapshots with a documented retention period.
- Perform scheduled restore tests to a separate instance and record the measured recovery time.
- Monitor disk health, filesystem errors, free space, and unexpected server exits.
- Keep a written change and shutdown procedure so maintenance does not terminate active writes abruptly.
- Document each table’s engine and the approved recovery command for that engine.
The practical rule is simple: check first, repair only when the engine supports it, and move InnoDB data to a clean, validated instance whenever corruption threatens the original server.
