A Dokku plugin is a collection of scripts and metadata that Dokku runs through agreed naming conventions. It can add command-line commands, provision or manage services, and react to application events such as deployment. The plugin model is deliberately broad: Dokku’s development documentation states, “Dokku has no restrictions on the language in which a plugin is implemented; it only cares that the plugin implements the appropriate commands or triggers for the API.”
That flexibility is useful on a VPS because a plugin can add a capability without changing Dokku’s core installation. It also means the plugin is privileged server software rather than an ordinary application dependency. Installation and dependency hooks may invoke package-manager commands, modify files, create users, or alter service configuration. Review the code and its maintenance history before allowing it to run as root.

Typical plugin components
plugin.tomlstores plugin metadata.commandsdefines additional Dokku commands.installcontains installation behavior.post-deploycan run after an application deployment.
The exact files and triggers vary by plugin. Read that plugin’s README and source rather than assuming that every plugin exposes the same commands or data-handling behavior.
Prepare the VPS before installing
Confirm version compatibility
Check the plugin repository for the Dokku releases it supports. A plugin may depend on internal APIs that change between Dokku releases, so compatibility is a release-specific question, not a general guarantee that a plugin will work on every server. Note the Dokku version, operating-system release, and architecture of the VPS, then compare them with the plugin’s documented requirements and open issues.

Read the README, installation scripts, dependency declarations, command files, and recent issue history. Look for package-manager calls, downloads, service restarts, filesystem changes, credential handling, backup instructions, and migration steps. Installation hooks run with the privileges needed by Dokku; do not treat a public repository as automatically safe merely because it is popular.
Plan recovery
Take the backups required by your application and by the plugin’s own documentation before a production change. Record the plugin’s source URL, selected ref, installation date, and the Dokku version. If the plugin manages persistent data, determine how its uninstall and migration procedures affect that data before you begin.
Use a direct server session
Plugin administration is performed on the Dokku host, not through a remote application shell. All plugin commands except plugin:list and plugin:help require sudo access. In practice, administrators commonly prefix list commands with sudo as well so that the same account and environment are used throughout the change.
Install a plugin step by step
1. Choose a trusted source
Dokku accepts Git, SSH, local file, HTTPS, and .tar.gz or .tgz sources. Prefer a repository with clear compatibility notes, active maintenance, documented dependencies, and a reviewable history. For example, the PostgreSQL plugin repository can be supplied as an HTTPS Git URL:
https://github.com/dokku/dokku-postgres.git
Use the source that the plugin maintainer documents. A local path can be useful when testing a plugin you are developing, while an immutable archive or pinned Git ref is preferable for a controlled production change.

2. Install from a URL or path
The basic form is:
sudo dokku plugin:install <source>
To install the PostgreSQL plugin from its repository, run:
sudo dokku plugin:install https://github.com/dokku/dokku-postgres.git
Dokku normally derives the plugin name from the repository. If you need a different local name, provide one explicitly:
sudo dokku plugin:install <source> --name <local-name>
Do not continue automatically if the output shows an unexpected repository, branch, dependency, or command. Stop and inspect the source and the failed hook first.
3. Pin a reproducible revision
For a repeatable installation, select a commit, tag, or branch with --committish. The documented example pins the PostgreSQL repository to the 2.0.0 ref:
sudo dokku plugin:install https://github.com/dokku/dokku-postgres.git --committish 2.0.0
A tag such as 2.0.0 is easier to communicate, while a full commit identifier provides the strongest immutability when the hosting project can move a branch or retag a release. Whichever ref you choose, record it with the server’s plugin inventory.
4. Install operating-system dependencies separately
Plugin installation does not automatically install system packages required by every plugin. After installing the plugin, run the dependency trigger:
sudo dokku plugin:install-dependencies
This step may call the operating system’s package manager and therefore has the same root-level trust implications as the install hook. Read the plugin’s dependency documentation first, especially on a production VPS where package changes can restart services or alter shared libraries.

5. Verify the installation
List the installed plugins:
sudo dokku plugin:list
For scripts, monitoring, or an audit record, request JSON:
sudo dokku plugin:list --format json
The JSON inventory can expose the plugin’s source URL, checked-out commit, branch, core status, and enabled state. Save the output after a change; it gives you a practical record of what was installed and where it came from.
6. Exercise the plugin on a test app
Read the individual plugin’s command and configuration documentation, then run its documented workflow against a non-production application. Verify the capability that motivated the installation: for a service plugin, confirm that the service can be provisioned, reached by the intended app, restarted, backed up, and restored according to the plugin’s instructions. Dokku’s general plugin documentation describes command and hook mechanisms but does not define one universal application test, so the plugin’s own validation steps are authoritative.
Adding a service such as PostgreSQL
A database plugin is installed using the same workflow as any other plugin. The installation adds the plugin’s commands and lifecycle hooks; it does not tell Dokku which database instances, applications, credentials, storage locations, or backup schedules you want. Those choices belong to the plugin’s documentation.

- Check that the PostgreSQL plugin release supports your Dokku release and operating system.
- Inspect its README and hooks, including storage, upgrade, backup, and removal behavior.
- Install it from the documented source, optionally pinning a ref:
sudo dokku plugin:install https://github.com/dokku/dokku-postgres.git --committish 2.0.0 - Install system dependencies:
sudo dokku plugin:install-dependencies - Confirm it appears in
sudo dokku plugin:list --format json, and record its source and checked-out revision. - Use the plugin’s documented service-creation and application-linking commands on a test app.
- Test connection configuration, persistence, restart behavior, backup, restore, and a planned upgrade before using it for production data.
Do not substitute commands from a different database plugin. Service names, environment-variable conventions, storage layout, and migration procedures are plugin-specific.
Inspect and audit the plugin inventory
The inventory commands answer different operational questions:
| Command | Use | What to record |
|---|---|---|
dokku plugin:list |
Human-readable list of installed plugins | Name, enabled state, and whether Dokku marks it as core |
dokku plugin:list --format json |
Machine-readable inventory | Source URL, checked-out commit, branch, core status, and enabled state when supplied by the inventory |
dokku plugin:installed <name> |
Check whether one plugin is present | The plugin name and the result of the presence check |
dokku plugin:help |
Display plugin-management help | Available commands for the installed Dokku release |
Use the JSON output as provenance, not as a substitute for reading the source. It tells you what Dokku has checked out; it does not independently certify that the repository is trustworthy or that the chosen revision remains compatible with your current Dokku version.

Update, disable, enable, or remove a plugin
Update a Git-backed plugin
Run:
sudo dokku plugin:update <name>
Dokku’s documentation recommends updating third-party plugins after a Dokku upgrade because internal APIs may change. Before updating, read the plugin’s release notes, verify backup and migration requirements, and capture the current JSON inventory. Afterward, repeat the test-app workflow and check the plugin’s commands and service behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
If reproducibility matters, do not rely on a moving branch without a change-control process. Select and record a known commit or tag, test it, and update that recorded ref deliberately rather than accepting whatever happens to be at the branch tip.
Disable and re-enable a third-party plugin
Temporarily deactivate a third-party plugin with:
sudo dokku plugin:disable <name>
Restore it with:
sudo dokku plugin:enable <name>
Disabling controls activation; it is not the same as uninstalling files or undoing a service’s data. Check the plugin documentation for effects on commands, hooks, running services, and application deploys before using it as an incident workaround.
Uninstall a third-party plugin
Remove it with:
sudo dokku plugin:uninstall <name>
Confirm whether the plugin supplies an uninstall hook and whether that hook removes packages, service instances, configuration, or persistent data. Export or back up anything you may need before running the command. Core plugins should not be treated like third-party plugins; use the Dokku release’s documented administration path for core components.
Trigger a hook explicitly
The command form is:
sudo dokku plugin:trigger <args...>
Use this only when the plugin documentation calls for it. A trigger can perform a state-changing action without the guardrails of the plugin’s normal command, so first establish what event and arguments it expects.
Troubleshoot common failures
The command is not found or permission is denied
- Run the command directly on the Dokku server, not inside an application container.
- Use
sudofor every plugin command that requires administrative access. - Check the exact plugin name shown by
dokku plugin:list; a repository name and an explicitly assigned--namemay differ. - Use
dokku plugin:helpto confirm that the command exists in your Dokku release.
Installation stops during a hook
- Read the complete error and identify whether it came from the plugin’s install script or a dependency trigger.
- Inspect the repository at the selected revision and verify operating-system prerequisites.
- Do not repeatedly rerun a failed root hook until you understand whether it partially changed packages, services, or files.
- Restore from the planned backup or follow the plugin’s rollback instructions if state was changed.
Dependencies are missing
Run sudo dokku plugin:install-dependencies after reviewing the dependency declarations. If the operating system cannot satisfy a package requirement, compare the plugin’s supported platforms with the VPS image rather than forcing unrelated packages into production.
The plugin broke after a Dokku upgrade
Check the plugin’s compatibility notes and issue tracker, then determine whether a newer plugin release is available. The documented lifecycle command is sudo dokku plugin:update <name>, but test the update before applying it to production. If the plugin is no longer maintained, disable it only after assessing the effect on its commands and managed services; uninstalling may be destructive.
Best Value
The inventory does not match expectations
Compare the human-readable list with sudo dokku plugin:list --format json. Look for a different source URL, checked-out commit, branch, disabled state, or core flag. An unexpected value is a provenance problem to investigate, not merely a display difference.
How to choose between plugins with similar features
When more than one plugin provides a capability, compare the operational surface rather than choosing solely by repository popularity:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Dokku compatibility | Does the plugin explicitly support your Dokku release and operating system? Are recent issues resolved? |
| Source trust | Who maintains it? Is the code reviewable? Are install and dependency hooks understandable? |
| Maintenance activity | Are releases and fixes regular enough for a component that runs with root access? |
| Dependencies | Which packages, repositories, ports, users, or services does installation add or change? |
| Reproducibility | Can you pin a commit, tag, or branch and record it in the JSON inventory? |
| Commands and configuration | Are creation, scaling, credentials, logs, upgrades, and recovery documented? |
| Backup and migration | How are persistent data and application links backed up, restored, and migrated? |
| Lifecycle status | Is it a core plugin or third-party plugin, and do the documented enable, disable, update, and uninstall paths fit your change process? |
Use a test application to validate the chosen plugin’s actual behavior. A clean install is not evidence that backups, upgrades, or failure recovery work.
Write your own Dokku plugin
You can create a plugin when the required capability does not exist or when an internal workflow needs a repeatable Dokku command or hook. Start by reading the plugin-creation documentation and existing, well-maintained plugins. Design the smallest command and trigger surface that solves the problem.
Build around conventions
- Add metadata in
plugin.toml. - Place user-facing commands in
commandsand follow Dokku’s expected command and argument conventions. - Put one-time setup or registration logic in
install. - Use lifecycle files such as
post-deployonly when the event is genuinely required. - Implement the documented API commands or triggers; the implementation language is your choice.
Design for safe installation
Document every operating-system dependency, network download, package change, filesystem path, service restart, environment variable, and permission requirement. Fail clearly when a prerequisite is absent, avoid destructive defaults, and make rerunning installation safe where possible. Because users invoke installation with administrative privileges, keep hooks short, reviewable, and narrowly scoped.
Test and release
- Run the plugin on a disposable Dokku host or test VPS.
- Verify installation, dependency setup, command output, enable and disable behavior, and each lifecycle trigger.
- Exercise a deployment and a failure path, then confirm that logs and exit codes are useful.
- Test upgrade and uninstall behavior, including what happens to persistent data.
- Publish compatibility requirements, supported Dokku releases, backup guidance, and a pinned release reference.
Keep the source repository and release notes available to operators. A plugin is part of the server’s control plane, so maintenance and rollback instructions matter as much as the feature itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical maintenance routine
- Keep an inventory file containing the output of
sudo dokku plugin:list --format json. - Record each plugin’s source URL, selected ref, checked-out commit, Dokku version, and operating-system version.
- Review plugin maintenance and compatibility before upgrading Dokku.
- Test plugin updates and database or service migrations on a non-production app first.
- Back up persistent services before disabling, updating, or uninstalling their plugins.
- Recheck enabled state and application behavior after every change.
Bottom line
Use sudo dokku plugin:install to add a feature, run sudo dokku plugin:install-dependencies for system packages, and verify the result with the human-readable or JSON plugin inventory. Pin a known revision when you need reproducibility, treat install hooks as root code, and use the plugin’s own documentation for service creation and application-level testing. Updates, disable/enable operations, explicit triggers, and uninstall are separate lifecycle actions; perform each with backups, compatibility checks, and a recorded rollback plan.
