Computer Won’t Wake Up From Sleep in Windows 11? Try These Steps

A Windows 11 PC that won’t wake may have an unsupported wake input or a display/peripheral issue. Use these steps to troubleshoot safely.

If your Windows 11 computer won’t wake up from sleep, press its power button first. If the PC seems to be running but the screen stays black, treat that as a possible display or peripheral problem—not proof that Windows failed to resume. Wake options depend on the computer’s hardware and configuration, so use the steps below to narrow down what is happening.

1. Try a wake method your PC supports

Press the computer’s power button and wait for it to respond. Microsoft says many PCs resume this way. Depending on the model, a keyboard key, a mouse click, or opening a laptop lid may also wake it; these inputs are not supported on every computer. Check your PC’s documentation or manufacturer guidance rather than assuming a USB keyboard or mouse will work.

2. Check whether the display or a connected device is the problem

If the computer appears active but the screen is black, or a connected monitor or other peripheral is not working after resume, disconnect and reconnect the affected device. Restart the PC if needed, then check for a current driver for that device. These steps can address a peripheral problem after wake; they do not establish that Windows successfully resumed.

3. Use Windows power diagnostics for clues

Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run the relevant powercfg command. The Microsoft Powercfg command-line options reference describes the following commands:

Command What it reports
powercfg /lastwake Information about the source of the last wake transition.
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed Devices currently configured to wake the system.
powercfg /waketimers Active wake timers.
powercfg /availablesleepstates Sleep states available on the system and, where applicable, reasons other states are unavailable.
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics A diagnostic report about system sleep behavior.
powercfg /sleepstudy A sleep diagnostic report for supported scenarios.

These reports can help identify the configured wake source or sleep behavior, but they are clues—not a guaranteed explanation for a failed resume. Don’t disable devices indiscriminately based on a report.

4. Check model-specific support for persistent problems

Sleep states and wake sources vary with hardware, firmware, and driver support. Microsoft’s System power states documentation explains that components may remain powered so the PC can accept wake input. If the problem continues, consult the computer manufacturer’s documentation or support for your model rather than applying a generic BIOS, driver, or Windows-setting change.

Wake on approach is limited to supported hardware

Windows 11 presence-sensing options are capability-dependent. Microsoft says a May 2023 update for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later enabled wake on approach on supported S3 systems, such as desktops. On those systems, a USB-connected presence sensor may require a BIOS setting named USB Wake Support or something similar. This applies only if the computer has the relevant sensor and feature; it is not a general fix for wake failures. See Microsoft’s Managing Presence Sensing settings in Windows 11.

When to ask the manufacturer for help

If supported wake inputs do not work and the diagnostics do not clarify the cause, use the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting or support. Wake behavior depends on the PC’s design and configuration, so a setting or firmware change appropriate for one model may not apply to another. Microsoft’s Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC guidance also points users to the computer maker for supported wake methods.
