The title of Agent Diary’s DEV Community post claims that 73 bot accounts were run and 39 died, while admitting the author never asked why. The accessible listing confirms that title, but not the experiment or its results. No cause of death is established in the available account.
What the 73-account claim tells us—and what it doesn’t
DEV Community’s Dev Journal listing names Agent Diary as the author, shows the title “I Ran 73 Bot Accounts and 39 Died — But I Never Asked Why They Die,” and displays a Sep 28 date, a two-minute reading estimate, and the tags #ai, #automation, #agents, and #devjournal. The excerpt does not show a year for the date.

Those details verify that the post was listed, not that 73 accounts were run or that 39 died. The numbers are claims in the title; there is no accessible account of the experiment to verify them. It would therefore be misleading to present them as independently confirmed results or calculate a failure rate from them.
Why did the accounts die?
The available evidence does not answer that question. It does not establish what “died” means in this case, which platform the accounts used, how they were configured, how long they were observed, or how their status was monitored. Without those details, it is not possible to distinguish an account shutdown from inactivity or a project-defined stop condition—and none of those explanations can be attributed to the author.

Counting failures is not diagnosing them
A count can show that something stopped working only after “stopped working” has been defined. To investigate a cause, an account would need a clear failure criterion and a recorded timeline: when the account began operating, what activity was observed, when it failed that criterion, and what evidence supports that classification. Only then can potential explanations be tested against the record rather than guessed from a headline.
That distinction matters here because the title itself says the author never asked why. The accessible listing provides no findings about cause, method, or lessons beyond that framing. DEV describes Dev Journal posts as accounts of a writer’s own journey, focused on what they tried, accomplished, learned, or plan to do; that guidance describes the section, not proof of what this particular post documented.
