Yes, you can watch some Swedish TV abroad, but access depends on the service, your location, whether you use a free or paid package, and the rights for the specific programme. SVT Play offers some on-demand programmes worldwide, while its live channels are Sweden-only. TV4 Play’s free package is also Sweden-only; eligible paid subscribers may use the service temporarily elsewhere in the EU/EEA, subject to TV4’s terms.
What determines whether a Swedish programme works abroad?
Check four things before relying on a service while travelling:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your location: Sweden, another EU/EEA country during a temporary trip, or somewhere outside the EU/EEA.
- How you access it: free package, paid subscription, on-demand programme, or live channel or event.
- The exact title’s rights: a programme may be licensed for Sweden but not your destination, or its availability window may have ended.
- The service’s current terms: account, package and access conditions differ between broadcasters.
EU portability rules do not make every Swedish programme available everywhere. They concern eligible paid online content when subscribers travel within the EU; they do not generally require a service to provide access to free content abroad or to sell subscriptions to people who live in another EU country. See the European Commission’s guidance on accessing online content abroad.
SVT Play abroad: some on-demand programmes, but not live channels
SVT says SVT Play is available worldwide, but individual programmes may be restricted to Sweden because of copyright and other territorial rights. The SVT Play abroad help page distinguishes this from the live channels, which SVT says are viewable only in Sweden.

Find programmes available outside Sweden
On SVT Play’s website, use the “Kan ses utomlands” filter, meaning “Available abroad.” In the mobile and tablet apps, SVT says the catalogue automatically shows only content available abroad. For a particular programme, check its page rather than assuming every episode has the same availability.
Why an SVT programme may be unavailable
SVT explains that it may not have acquired rights for other territories, or may not be able to afford them. Its public service fee is not a subscription payment, so SVT Play is not treated like a paid service that must provide EU portability. Programme rights can also vary by title, episode, territory and time window.

SVT Play and VPNs
SVT says it does not support VPN use and cannot guarantee that access will work for all programmes. A VPN is not a reliable way to make a rights-restricted title or live channel available.
TV4 Play abroad: free and paid access differ
TV4’s terms, marked updated 10 June 2026, say access is generally permitted only in Sweden. The free package does not provide access outside Sweden. A subscriber with a paid package may, under certain conditions, use TV4 Play temporarily in another EU/EEA country, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/1128. This is a travel provision, not a general guarantee for a permanent move or every destination. Check the current TV4 Play terms and package conditions for your circumstances.

Accounts and package conditions
TV4 says an account is required for ordinary use, although clips and news broadcasts may be watched without logging in. Creating an account subscribes the user to the free package; paid packages are available as upgrades. The content and prices of packages are shown on TV4’s website or app and may change.
TV4 Play and VPNs
TV4’s terms disallow access through anonymised proxy or VPN traffic. Do not assume that a VPN is permitted or will restore access while travelling.

What about other Swedish TV services?
Do not assume another broadcaster follows SVT’s or TV4’s rules. Check that service’s current terms and the location availability of the exact programme, episode or event. EU portability applies to eligible paid content for subscribers temporarily travelling elsewhere in the EU; it does not make all Swedish TV globally accessible or require services to serve residents of other countries.
Why availability changes over time
Rights agreements can limit where a programme is shown and how long it remains available, including programmes made by SVT. SVT gives examples of some news programmes having seven-day windows and some acquired films or documentaries being available for 30 days. These are examples, not universal retention periods. SVT says sports rights are almost always limited nationally because rights holders sell them territory by territory.

- Tons of power, tons of fun: Compact and power-packed, you’ll stream your favorites with ease; from movies and series on Apple TV, Prime Video, Netflix, The Roku Channel, HBO, Showtime and Google Play to cable alternatives like Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue, enjoy the most talked about TV across free and paid channels

SVT’s catalogue guidance says a common reason a programme disappears is that its rights window has expired. Programmes without international rights are hidden when a viewer is abroad. Look under “Mer om programmet” (“More about the programme”) for availability details; SVT also flags some titles nearing removal in “Sista chansen” (“Last chance”).
